Pick of the Week Podcast

12.18.2011 – Episode #315 – Severed #5

Show Notes

Total Running Time: 01:02:37

December 18, 2011 – Things get a little….heated this week on the Pick of the Week podcast as Josh, Conor and Ron wonder why they’re here and are reminded quickly that it’s comics…The one constant through all the years, Ray, has been comics. America has rolled by like an army of steamrollers. It has been erased like a blackboard, rebuilt and erased again. But comics has marked the time. These books, these characters: it’s a part of our past, Ray. It reminds of us of all that once was good and it could be again.

Comics:
00:02:03 – Josh is freaked out with glee by the unsettling Severed #5.
00:11:04 – BUT MAN was Uncanny X-Force #18 the best thing ever, or what? Ron and Conor think so.
00:17:38 – The second set wraps up with 27: Second Set #4, and Josh really dug this volume.
00:19:47 – This Avengers X-Sanction #1. This is not Ron’s kind of comic book.
00:23:14 – Everyone agrees, Batwoman #4 continues to brilliance.
00:26:03 – Happy Holidays with the Frank Capra-esque Journey Into Mystery #632.
00:30:22 – Conor was impressed with the fun found in the new mini-series The Ray #1.
00:31:47 – Josh is the only one reading Pigs #4 (so far) and thinks he should like it more than he does.
00:33:28 – Art changes and obligatory Green Arrow appearance challenges the enjoyment of Grifter #4.
00:36:01 – There isn’t more fun for Conor in comics than Avengers 1959 #4.

User Reviews:
00:37:08 – The Top 5 Community Picks of the Week.
00:38:11 – JdRavnos was very impressed by how they dealt with real issues in  Avengers Academy #23.
00:39:20 – jwt6577 is really enjoying  Green Lantern #4.

The player won’t load for me on firefox. Is there a plug-in I need?

  2. nathematics nathematics says:

Do we get extra credit for recognizing the awesome and iFanboy-favorite movie that features this Christmas song?

  3. jackal87 jackal87 says:

I dunno if any previous announcements contradict this but are you guys doing another Year end All Media Round-up?

    • Ron Richards Ron Richards (@ronxo) says:

we mention it in the show this week, yes – the next 2 weeks is the 2011 media round up

    • jackal87 jackal87 says:

Sorry, typed that before listening. Are you guys going to “booze it up” this time or is that usually reserved for anniversaries?

Ohh yeah, dunno if you need to know this but you guys…. are kinda awesome. Happy Holidays and such and such!

  4. Well in this case josh it’s a completely different colorist in this issue of Severed then the last four before it. So that’s why it might feel a little different.

It threw me off a little, which is why I didn’t make it POTW personally. It wasn’t bad, but the change was too noticeable for me to not see the difference.

  5. Heysideburns Heysideburns says:

    Worst Christmas song ever!!!!

  6. bigben2012 says:

I dropped Pigs after issue 2. It wasn’t a bad comic, but the magic was lacking. Maybe I’ll pick up the trade if the reviews are good. I wanted to like that Pigs.

  7. monkeyking monkeyking says:

Long time listener, but I had to register just so I can say how much I disagree with you guys about Avengers 1959. I picked it up partly because of your guys recommendations, too! Ugh! This art gets in the way of the story telling SO MUCH. It’s distracting to have people distorted, scenes that don’t work, and more. In the latest issue, there are characters who change size relationship from panel to panel, anatomy that grows and shrinks as needed, and one guy who left a table by magically leaving the booth even though he was between two people!? But you guys did clue me in on like Chew so I guess it all balances out.

  8. icn1983 icn1983 says:

I think that’s the only real Christmas song I can actually stand anymore and it’s only because of “Gremlins.”

  9. lifesend lifesend says:

Re: digital prices, Marvel is the only company I know of that doesn’t lower their prices, seemingly ever. Marvel Universe vs. The Punisher is still $3.99 an issue, with both a HC and TPB in print. Bendis’ new collection of Jinx was released in print in May at $24.99 and was just released on Comixology for the same price. This is just one of the many reasons I detest Marvel as a business.

  10. diebenny diebenny says:

I finally got the Fear Agent trades. It took me awhile, but I did it. Now it’s time for someone to give Josh Uncanny X-Force. It’s great how these things can go both ways.

Thanks for another swell show dudes!

  11. jackietam jackietam says:

I don’t even like the X-men. I try to avoid those titles as much as I can. But even I have to admit – after reading the last three hardcovers and finally caught on issues – it’s seriously the best ongoing title in comics right now.

  12. Loser13 Loser13 says:

Great show guys, really appreciate everything y’all are doing. Happy holidays to everyone………..i miss the video show.

  13. boosebaster boosebaster says:

For some time I’ve been confused about an aspect of this show – how come Ron always gets a PotW?

Conor and Josh do occasionally say something like “Had it been my week, I may well have chosen X as my pick” but Ron always makes a point of “This is MY pick of the week.” He even made a thing of it this week, saying Kieron Gillen would have been stoked to have received the nod for his Pick of the Week, if it were not for Uncanny X-Force taking it. But it was Josh’s pick!

Sorry Ron it’s just as a listener it confuses me. Every week you guys say at the beginning “each week ONE of us gets the pick” and then every time this happens I feel like the actual pick has been undermined. If you want the format to be that every week you EACH get a pick, fine, I think that would also be a good show – but that’s not the format you lay down for us presently.

  14. Sockman Sockman says:

Why do all the Asian guys of the New 52 have pissed off girlfriends?

  15. Funcrusher Funcrusher says:

@ Conor Batman: Noel is DC’s holiday book. I read it last night and enjoyed it.

  16. adrianrigter adrianrigter says:

don’t know how i spaced on this, thanks for reading my email guys:)
