Pick of the Week Podcast

Pick of the Week #356 – Uncanny Avengers #1

Show Notes

It’s the last comic con of 2012, and Josh Flanagan, Conor Kilpatrick, and Ron Richards are back in a hotel room, gathered around the mic to talk about this week’s comics. Specifically, to address just what Ron was thinking making Uncanny Avengers #1 the pick of the week and not Batman #13. We also talk about a bunch of the week’s other releases, but due to the con and being exhausted, no detailed show notes for this episode from us but thanks to Sam Cavanagh (g0ofgnewt), we’ve got show notes!

Total Running Time: 00:33:44

Pick of the Week:
00:02:10 – New and Nude listeners alike want to know about Ron’s Pick of the Week struggle with Uncanny Avengers #1. It was a slight edge to Ron’s Loyalty to Marvel and Rick Remender. The first book of Marvel NOW did not disappoint in writing or art.

Comics:
00:11:46 – On any other week the Pick of the Week could have been (and was Conors pick) Batman #13 by Snyder and Capulo. The first part of “Death of a Family” storyline. Ron now knows how Josh has felt in previous years. It was creepy and set up the Joker as the scariest villain of the Batman book, if not the DC Universe.
00:16:46 – Conor would have lifted Ron on his shoulders if he chose MacGyver #1 as Pick of the Week. Shockingly Josh has never seen the TV show. The TV show was great, but what do the guys think about the Image comic?
00:22:03 – The “Final” issue of Fantastic Four wraps up a few dangling story lines before the real end in the next issue of FF.
00:22:45 – Beloved characters fall in Wolverine and The X-Men #18. Aaron understanding the importance of ripping people’s hearts out.
00:24:22 – The Avengers #31 is nice to have an Avengers issue that stands by itself. This setting up Bendis’ final arc.
00:25:47 – Conor, on a lark, bought Ami-Come Girls: Featuring Wonder Woman #1 due to the Power Girl creative team of Justin Gray/Jimmy Palmiotti and Amanda Conner.
00:28:16 – Phantom Stranger bring back the concept of the embellisher. Did DiDio deliver?

  2. ^ bravo, sir

  3. I actually don’t mind that Ron picked Uncanny Avengers over Batman… It’s always better to have the hosts pick something different over the community. It keeps things interesting.

  4. If you want two more great Teddy Roosevelt books I’d suggest:

“The Wilderness Warrior” by Douglas Brinkley (A biography of Teddy from his birth to the end of his presidency but with a view on his environmental achievements)

“Island of Vice” by Richard Zacks (Covers the two years when he was Police Commissioner of New York City)

But I guess we could save them for the inevitable Teddy podcast spinoff by josh.

  5. When I hear Teddy Roosevelt, my mind immediately goes to Benito Cereno’s Tales From the Bully Pulpit. One of the most hilarious graphic novels I’ve ever read, featuring Teddy Roosevelt and a time-traveling Thomas Edison (and a host of other historical figures) battling space Hitler.

  6. Yesterday, Oct 14, 1912, is the anniversary of Teddy Roosevelt geting shot in the chest. The bullet was stopped by the speech he was about to give. Even after getting shot he continued the speech. Like a boss.

  7. I guess Snyder missed a payment this month. 😉

  8. who chose the song? I love Texas is the Reason!

  9. Did you guys get to go to Rev 25? Going to NYCC during the day and seeing Texas and Into Another at night would’ve been my dream vacation, but I couldn’t swing it.

  10. I know that the photo to the right betrays my bias, but the best advice on this whole podcast was Josh’s to read The Rise of Theodore Roosevelt. It’s an awesome book. If you like it, definitely check out The River of Doubt as well (really, almost any book about TR is great because the subject is super interesting).
