Pick of the Week Podcast

Pick of the Week #274 – Axe Cop: Bad Guy Earth #1

Show Notes

Ron Richards and Conor Kilpatrick are off in Seattleville, or Pacficinorthwestburg, or some such, so Josh Flanagan handles the shop, and invites iFanboy writers Paul Montgomery and Tom Katers on the show to fill in, and much merriment is had by all and more agreement than usual. Plus, apparently if you need a shanty-ish room, Red Lobster may or may not be the place for you.

Running Time: 01:08:51

Pick of the Week:
00:02:54 – The guys are all well chuffed about the Pick of the Week, Axe Cop: Bad Guy Earth #1. Little kid or no, it’s a romping good time.

Comics:
00:16:00 – Fear is not an option when it comes to the Man-Thing story in Thunderbolts #154.
00:19:15 – Lemire and Asrar form tiny, tiny magic in Giant Size Atom Special.
00:22:41 – Some of Annihilators #1 was very good, some was pretty good, and some we can’t decide on. Rocket Raccoon? All good.
00:29:09 – It’s yet another great issue with Jonah Hex #65. No one is surprised at all.
00:30:08 – Paul gets to expound on Locke & Key: Keys to the Kingdom #5, which is just more mastery.
00:36:20 – They went and did it, bringing Edward Grey grey successfully into the old west, in Witchfinder: Lost and Gone Forever #2.
00:38:09 – With Powers #7, Josh found something to like, but also something lacking.
00:39:59 – On the other hand, Josh is oddly enamored by Ultimate Captain America #3.
00:41:26 – Infestation time! G.I. Joe: Infestation #1 is a good Joe book, not so much a good zombie book.

00:47:03 – DarthDuck might be biased, but he sings the praises of Darkwing Duck Annual #1.

00:50:33 – Ariff is having a rough go, and wants to know what comics will make him feel better.
00:53:30 – Darrin wonders about John Byrne and that whole thing.

Comments

  1. Paul and Tom in the same podcast? YES PLEASE.

  2. House Arrest Three 4 Life!

  3. Paul, Tom, and Josh in the same Podcast . . . that is alot of awesome in one audio file.

  4. In response to Ariff’s question, I once again have to recommend Superman: Secret Identity.

Also Strangers in Paradise and Empowered.

  5. Wow, I didn’t read any of the books discussed on the podcast, but I’m still looking forward to listening to all of it.

  6. “There’s a word for that …”

    Parallelism.

(though you may have been thinking of something else)

  7. I’m with ya DrColossus.  That has never happened in the 3 years I’ve been listening.

  8. @PaulAllor  PARALLEL STRUCTURE!

    Yes, thank you.

  9. Avatar photo Paul Montgomery (@fuzzytypewriter) says:

What was that in reference to? I should have caught that. I have, literally, a degree that says I should’ve been on that.

  10. Axe Cop melted my brain and I don’t think I could read any more issues of it.

  11. @PaulMontgomery  It was just in a sentence, not a story, perse.

    Still, all that tuition…

  12. Don’t be ashamed of liking Cold Play, Josh.

  13. Avatar photo Jeff Reid (@JeffRReid) says:

Great episode, guys. A lot of fun. Any time you want to keep this rotation of hosts is fine by me.

I’m telling you this now for fear you’ll waste time trying to run it by me in the future. Do not feel like you need to do so!

  14. Is this the first time only one of the iFanboy trinity is on the main podcast?

If so, I’m not sure I’m down with that (haven’t listened yet though).

Just not down with it on principle.

And I’ve listened to all the podcasts, so I think this is the first time . . .

I don’t care if Alan Moore and Shakespeare were the two special guests, I don’t like the idea.

    I think I’m freaking out . . .

    Someone talk me down.

  15. Avatar photo Paul Montgomery (@fuzzytypewriter) says:

@ScorpionMasada  We’ve done them where NONE of the trinity are in attendance.

  16. Shit! True!

That just felt like a special edition.

I’m sure if I listen, I’ll be fine.

    Thanks Paul.

  17. And nothing is worse than no pick of the week podcast and that happens about once a year, right?

I should just be grateful and not overreact.

  18. Now, I feel embarrassed . . .

  19. Is it a trinity or TRINITY?
If so, who’s Wonder Woman? Josh or Ron?
It has to be Ron, doesn’t it?

  20. I like coldplay. 🙂

  21. I love it when Paul or Tom are on. And this time both were on! YAY!  Can’t wait for all three to be back on. Also, hopefully this episode will put a nail in the “Josh hates fun” coffin. Cuz, Axe Cop guys. AXE COP.

  22. @roadcrew1 that happens to me very often, including this week.

  23. Paul & Tom are my two favorite fill-in artists. Looking forward to listening.

  24. The only genuine fun I had reading Axe Cop was when I read his line when he threw that bomb, and I thought to myself, “this 6 year old really is good, he’s telling the people who thinks this is the greatest comic ever what he thinks of them for thinking so, in the guise of a line meant for the bad guys.”

If this weren’t marketed as having been done by a 6 year  old, I don’t think it would ever have gotten the same attention. This book is clearly not for me. I do love fun though. Not the foolish illogical type apparently. Sorry if I seem like a dick. I just don’t like it when something is regarded by some as the greatest thing on earth when I feel it’s really far from it, like the way I feel about Twilight. Good thing only a few people like Axe Cop unlike the massive Twihards in movie goers.

  25. I don’t think I said it was the greatest thing on Earth…unless sliced bread has gone out of fashion. There is a range of feelings you can have for a book that falls between the worst thing ever and the greatest thing ever.

  26. I just bought the second Starman omnibus, so I’m stoked for that video show!

  27. joe

  28. mantegna

  29. ifanboy isn’t the only one mentioning manimal this week: http://www.cnbc.com/id/40611204/?slide=7

  30. When I was 7 I thought that Manimal was, like, the greatest TV show ever.

  31. Thanks for reading my review guys!  Paul did a much better job at articulating the story than i did so thanks…

I kinda feel the same way about the Mignola-verse as you guys. Even when its not the best, its still really good. Its always a safe bet for me.

love the team on this episode…even when the starters are out, the bench comes up big in the clutch!

  32. buddy, if you’re hurting over ladies. Read Preacher. That’ll make ya feel good about relationships

  33. According to wikipedia Manimal was created by the same guy who created KnightRider and NIGHT MAN! Which makes complete sense.

  34. Oh goodness. He created this show too. This man was amazing. I hope he’s rich now.

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Automan

  35. Comics to make you feel good? Well there’s a lot of positivity in Alan Moore, but you gotta get through the negative too hence his cyclical view of the universe etc.

Classic Dan Dare is pure feel good fun! Particularly when they stop for tea mid battle, or Digby’s gran in Wigan solves the code that saves the universe!

& Tank Girl is always good for a laugh 🙂
