200 Words with Paul Dini #31 - There Will Be Sandwiches: Part Three

The important thing to remember, both Jeffery Katzenberg and his writers stressed, was that the show they were doing was NOT “The Honeymooners” with lions.  They then went onto outline the series, which was exactly “The Honeymooners” with lions.

As the meeting ended, the producers thanked us for coming and hoped that we would consider lending our storyboarding talents to an animated series they felt confident would eclipse “The Simpsons” in humor and longevity. Then we went down to the Dreamworks foyer where, sure enough, there were trays of finger sandwiches and cookies.  I had two of each and left.

A week later I received a call from the harried assistant who initially summoned me to the meeting.  In even more harried tones she told me a mistake had been made and I, as I suspected all along, was not the “Batman” producer they wanted.  She also asked me to not tell anyone what I had seen or heard in regard to their new prime time series, which, as it turned out, only lasted until that Halloween.  I asked her if she wanted the sandwiches back, and, after several seconds of consideration, she earnestly replied, “No, I think that’s okay.”

Paul Dini is the Emmy and Eisner Award winning writer of Batman: The Animated Series, Superman: The Animated Series, Detective Comics, Countdown among many, many other things. You can find him online at either kingofbreakfast.livejournal.com or http://www.jinglebelle.com/.

Was that series Father of the Pride? I liked that one.

When you can do what he just did in 200 words, that right there is talent.

I loved that show....even bought the DVD's.   NBC kinda did it a disservice by showing it at 8pm/7pm central time, as that is family hour.....and Father of the Pride was not for the kiddies.  Always hoped that Cartoon Network would pick it up and let them make more episodes, but to no avail.

When I say Cartoon Network, I mean of course Adult Swim......I understood what I meant, but wanted to clarify.

If she had said yes, would there have been a Part Four to this story? Sorry, I hope that thought doesn't gross you out...

Amazing, but can he ever top the manufactured babys coming out of the poison ivy cacoon? That was just disturbing Dini - and I loved it!
