  1. Ooh, Warren and Hank cover. Nice!

By the way, is Greg Land returning to this book or it is gonna be the Dodsons ongoing?

  2. This thing is at least a month late.

  3. @s1lentslayer: There was an annual last month instead of a regular issue.

  4. Land will be back after this arch concludes, which almost makes me sad. However, Fraction is doing such a good job here that I’ll keep reading it no matter who draws it.

  5. Its been slated that Dodson and Land would be switching off after each arc.  Who knows how long they are both on the book for.  I could do without either one of them, but I’ve been enjoying Fraction’s story for the last few issues so I’m sticking around

  6. I really don’t know what it is, but I just can’t get into Uncanny anymore.

  7. @Kirkerson: I’m with you.  I love the X-Men but for some reason this story isn’t doing it for me.  I was 50/50 on whether or not I was going to drop this, but now that I know Land is coming back I’m definitely dropping it.

  8. Considering dropping this. I usuall love Fraction’s writing but like others above, this just isn’t thrilling me.

  9. I see a lot of negative comments about the writing in this book but rarely any specifics.  I’m really enjoying it so I’m just curious — what are the complaints about the story?  What is it that you want to see in an X-men book you’re not getting?  Which writers/series/runs would you compare this negatively to?

I don’t mean to sound defensive just because I like the book, but I’m genuinely curious what the perceived negatives are.

  10. I can say that I’m enjoying the book, but it’s not great. Not yet, anyway. I think my major problem stems from the art. I don’t particularly care for Land or Dodson. I wish they could’ve put Stephano Casselli on this book rather than Secret Warriors.

  11. I initially liked the new status quo after House of M, but now I feel like the X-men lack direction. The pay-off for Mutant Messiah just wasn’t what I hoped for, and now I don’t think the move to San Francisco was all that engaging. Don’t get me wrong, I love the X-men. I just haven’t really loved any of the titles since Whedon finished on Astonishing.

I think more than anything, I prefer "protecting a world that fears and hates them" to "fighting for survival."

  12. I like what Fraction is doing and where its heading

  13. i like this after the whole messiah thing. its getting great.

  14. I’m digging this book, I’m just struggling to remember what happened before the annual.

  15. Anyone looking for some good x-stuff should check out X-Infernus  I think its easily the best story since MC and features plenty of the A-Listers

  16. That’s it, I think I’m dropping this right here. With Greg Land coming back, I don’t see myself reading this book. And the Lovelorn arc kinda bores me.

  17. @ohcaroline: The main reason I’m not digging it is because I simply cannot stand Emma Frost as a character.  I have no clue what Cyclops sees in her.   I know it sounds silly to hate a fictional character, but she annoys the hell out of me.

Storywise, it’s not grabbing me because I started reading with issue #504, so I don’t have any context for what’s being discussed in the book.  Once my funds are a little bit better, I’ll go back and get some trades to catch up, but right now I can’t afford to buy a book that I’m simply going through the motions with while I’m reading it.

I’m also not a big fan of the art.  I know most people love it, but it’s just not my style.

  18. @Kory – you should check out the Uncanny Annual from last month.  It might change your mind on Emma

  19. @Kory  Okay, but Emma’s been around for a while.  She featured heavily in Astonishing XMen and in Brubaker’s run.  Is there something about this run particularly?

(And I’m known to be a bit of an Emma hater myself, but I’ve loved her in Dark Reign so far and, like cutty, I thought last month’s annual was great).

Having read the new issue, I do think the pacing isn’t quite what it could be; there are a lot of stories being juggled together, and i’m wondering when the hell we’re going to get back to the Madelyne revelation from last arc, which was kind of thrown out and dropped.  Still liking the story a good deal though.  Fringe science, FTW. . .and a great Colossus story.

  20. This book is written just for me. Emma has been my favorite X-chracter since Morrisons run, and I’ve been way into Fraction since Casanova 1. The art, however, has been an abortion. I wonder how Fraction and Brubaker have been talked into caring so little about how their great writing is dressed up. Last month on the annual, Breitwiser’s lines were great, but I found the finish too processed. Just because the photoshop filters exist does NOT mean that they should be used.

  21. @ohcaroline: I haven’t read Brubaker’s run, or Astonishing X-Men, so I can’t compare this story with what has come before.   All I can speak for is the two previous issues (I didn’t read the annual), and they bored me.  I kept looking for a reason to care, and I couldn’t find one.  I know that’s not very specific, but I just can’t put my finger on what it is about this story that I don’t like.

But this story hasn’t put me off completely to the X-Men, I plan on coming back later and seeing if I enjoy it, but right now it’s just not doing anything for me.

  22. @ Kory – the last 2 issues weren’t all that great, they were both setup.  I wouldn’t say they’re a very good representation of Fraction’s run so far.  The Greg Land issues very good in my opinion as long as you can get past any Land-hatred you might have.

I believe Fraction is building something though, unfortunately sometimes it takes a little while to get to the payoff

  23. Hilarious that the japanese scientist creates a huge lizard creature.  Silly Fraction.

Solid issue, I just still feel like this arc is one long setup issue.  Sure we got somewhere with Colossus, but it could have been done in just a few pages.

And I’m still a bit confused as to why we should believe that this time around, Beast will solve the "no more mutants" problem.  Wasn’t the whole point of that shitty Endangered Species backstory that he had tried everything he could and there was nothing else possible?  Was Beast just half-assing it last time?

Still enjoyable, I just have more questions than I would like.  And seeing how this is Fraction’s 6th issue in the series, I think that’s a problem

  24. At first I was really bothered by Fraction’s handling of this book, especially the over the top flirting scenes between Scott and Emma that happened way too often.  Now that Fraction’s cut those scenes down and he’s gaining a better comprehension of the team dynamic, as well as giving everyone there moment in the spotlight, I’m really falling head over heels for this series.  Dodson will be missed; I like him better than Land.

  25. @cutty: I think I’ll go back and get those issues you mentioned.  Maybe I should give this another chance, and not be so quick to judge after only two issues.

  26. anyone else have huge printing errors on page 6?

  27. I’m really enjoying this book.  It feels like the old X-Men.  Multiple storylines going.  I can’t remember the last time a writer handled subplots so well.
As far as the art, I loved Dodson on WW and I like his stuff here.  Land I could do without.

  28. i think this book i great.  the art is clear and crisp wich is all i really want, and the story seems to be pritty good.  i didnt like the move to SF but the story is working out.  the X-men has a huge cast so it will take some time to get the story moving, but that should be expected.  and as far as for emma, i thought she was an awsome villian and was very sad when she became a hero.  and i have only hated her as a charicter sence.  alot of you said that you loved the annual, i didnt. hated the art and emma in it.

  29. Ok, I’m totally on board now. It was the giant lizard.

  30. Liking the science team aspect, and obviously that’s what Fraction likes writing the best in this book. But man… I’ve really been confused by the X-Books Post M-Day. And not in a storyline way, I mean in a "What the hell are you doing way?" People complain about DC’s Crisises, it seems the X-Men go through a personality crisis every 24 issues (which, with the amount of X-Books is fairly often!).

I really didn’t get the point of M-Day, other than it’s undoing (and the X-Books leading up to it) 99% of Morrison’s run. So there are more than 198, but we’re just gonna keep saying this number to get it into people’s heads that are "no more mutants." I really didn’t get Endangered Species, essentially a giant ball of "Beast is Failing!." And Messiah Complex.. well… yeah. I dunno. The Move the SF was exciting for me, if a little smacking of "The current X-Writers are Left-Coasters and therefore are more able to make that setting seem real than New York."

I may drop this title. Zeus knows I’m cose to dropping X-Men Legacy.

  31. I love the direction of this book since fraction took over but i cant seem to get past the art. Greg Land was bad but Dodson isnt much better. I wish they would pull Sandoval from Young Xmen and put him permanantly on this book. It would so much better of an experience.

  32. Wow, this was really great fun to read!  The art was very nice and the story felt right for an X-book.  Last issue was pretty solid as well; I like the direction Fraction’s heading in right now!

  33. @PraxJarvin – why do you write that there are more than 198 mutants based on this issue (incidently, that wasn’t meant as an absolute number but a ball park)?  Have they been introducing new mutants and I’ve been missing it?  They keep bringing in persecuted former (e.g. de-powered) mutants, but I haven’t noticed large (or even small for that matter) groups of new mutants getting introduced.
