THE FINALE TO THE FIRST VOLUME OF S.H.I.E.L.D.!

This chapter comes to a close in a fashion that will have your jaw on the floor. It is Da Vinci vs. Newton with the fate of the world in the balance. Who is the Night Machine on the side of? What role will the Celestial Child play? The most talked about book of 2010 closes its first volume with a bang. But don’t worry, the same team will be back soon with volume 2!

  1. I waited and picked up 1-5 this week 🙂 Looking forward to this!

  2. Love this cover!

  3. I am routing for Newton. Sure, he is a total dick, but sometimes you want a dick in charge when protecting the planet is the game plan. Plus, he is a fun villain.

  4. I’m still waiting to see what Leonid’s angle/involvement in the story is. It seems to me that he’ll become the focal point of the story (in #s 7-12 perhaps?). Gonna have to read 1-6 all over again …

  5. I’m glad I didn’t pick this up. Should make a great trade.

  6. Why isn’t Dustin Weaver famous?

  7. Didn’t even know this was in volumes but i’ll have to go back and read them all at once

  8. This has been such an amazing series, and that’s a hell of a cover.

I’m curious as to how they wrap up this “volume”. I’m perfectly happy with however Hickman wants to slowly tell his story over the course of however many years he needs to tell it, but last issue didn’t seem much like a penultimate chapter of anything part of any storyline as established in the first five issues. I’m personally not looking forward to seeing Tesla introduced as a character (I like Tesla but have seen that way too many fictionalizations of him lately, in comics especially). On the other hand Weaver’s art keeps getting better and better.

Hopefully the “volume” concept doesn’t just mean that we have to wait 6 months for the next issue after this one. I don’t think it’s an issue of Weaver needing time to get ahead, because this issue is coming out less than two months since issue #5…

  9.  “It is Da Vinci vs. Newton with the fate of the world in the balance.”

It’s shit like that that makes me love comic books

  10. Last issue we’re gonna get for a while. Weaver is apparently going to get more time to draw issues so we can see this get released monthly for the next volume. But we have supplementary material coming for the next few months…..Not sure if I’ll pick it up.

But I’m excited for this final issue to see where Hickman is gonna take us for the future.

  11. hoping for something major. last issue was kind of a let down.

  12. It doesn’t end this way…

  13. @TheNextChampion  What kind of supplementary material do you mean?

  14. @skydog  haha … This is not how it ends.

  15. @TexasZombie99: He’s going to release material that goes deeper into the universe he’s creating. I think it’s mostly going to be a prose heavy issue.

  16. looking forward to reading this 1st arc straight thru and see what i missed and too see if it can actually be even better

  17. @amircat nice pick up on that!

  18. Sorry, just curious; is this in the Marvel U proper? I dropped it a couple issues ago, so I’m not sure what the endgame is in the story. Is this an alternate reality kinda thing, or a secret history of the MU thing?

  19. I am seeing this as a secret history based in the Marvel U proper. Loving this and even though I have the single issues, I will buy the TPB.

  20. Am I the only one that feels like I’m only understanding 1/3 to 1/2 of what is going on?  It’s a great series so far, but sometimes it hurts my head 🙂

  21. My comic shop’s copies of these were damaged, so Im waiting until next week to pick this up.

  22. Fantastic Issue.  I don’t fully understand everything that’s going on, but the big ideas that Hickman’s throwing out there, accompanied by Weaver’s GORGEOUS art makes this possibly my favorite series from the big 2

  23. @CaseyJustice

    Hickman says it’s in 616.

  24. It’s been referenced in FF, and that’s pretty in-continuity as far as I’m concerned.

  25. This has been my favorite series. The art has been nothing short of spectacular and the way they have weaved this secret history in with the traditional Marvel Universe (The Brood, Celestials, Galactus, Deviants!!!) has been wonderful. The story of Isaac Newton’s rise to power was amazing.

  26. Maybe I’m just more into Sci-fi than others but this has been pretty straight-forward so far. Good but not confusing.

  27. This book is so far ahead of everything else being put out its absurd. Hickman is writing the type of comics everyone will be making in like 5 years. He is so far ahead of the curve.

  28. I love this series and will be sitting down to read them again in one sitting. I’m sure there are some things I missed the first time. When is the trade due out? I am going to buy it eventhough I own the singles, this is definately a book I will loan out to friends.

  29. The art alone makes this a 5/5.  I would wish that this book would come out more often, but that would mean we wouldn’t get anything close to this good.
