Punisher Max X-Mas Special 2008

"AND ON EARTH PEACE, GOOD WILL TOWARD MEN"
It just wouldn't be Christmas without the Punisher, now would it? There's no room at the inn for a mobster and his pregnant wife who are on the run from rival gangsters, but lucky for them Frank Castle is in a giving mood. Though keeping them alive won't be easy, what with three vicious gun-toting wise-guys and a wacked-out pimp named Shepherd all hot on their trail. But then nobody ever said Christmas miracles came easy, did they?

Jason Aaron on Punisher? I'm in.

Jason Aaron writing the Punisher?

*head explodes in joy*

Posted by TheNextChampion on 12/02/08 at 01:25 AM

@Champ -- I thought you didn't buy into the Aaron "hype"? :P

This is an early Christmas present for me. I just hope it's full MAX style & not soft around the edges.

Posted by WadeWilson on 12/02/08 at 02:51 AM

Hey, is this a one-shot? And, is it regular sized? I'm boycotting $3.99 regular length comics.

Posted by WadeWilson on 12/02/08 at 02:55 AM

@Wade: Yet I didnt buy into the Aaron type....Until I bought all the Black Panther SI issues, the Wolverine: Get Mystique! TPB, and basically anything else he's done (sans Scalped). So...yeah he is a good writer and I'm sorry I didnt acknowledge him earlier.

If I can add though, someone asked me a long way back on what I would love to see Jason Aaron write. I think his talent is wasted on C level heroes like Panther and Ghost Rider and The Punisher easily came to mind with me with the guy, especially the MAX imprint version....Well here it is, Aaron is writing a one-shot Punisher MAX story. Hopefully this could be a test to see if Aaron can write the character cause I would love to see him work on Punisher more. Hurwitz is doing great now and Swierzinski is coming up next, but Jason Aaron would be a dream come true if it were to happen.

Posted by TheNextChampion on 12/02/08 at 09:57 AM

I can't think of anyone better for Aaron to write (except I would like to see his take on Batman after his Penguin one-shot and reading the crap that was RIP from G-Mo).

@Wade: There is no page count on Marvel's website but if memory serves me correct the X-Mas specials have usually been more than the standard page count in the past. Fingers crossed. These 4 dollar books are killing me this week.

Posted by comicdork37 on 12/02/08 at 10:32 AM

I think Marvel's new business model is to try and keep their regular series issues at 2.99, and sell any one-shots, events and specials at 3.99.  Get used to it folks.

Jason Aaron writing Punisher? Win.

@TheNextChampion: Yeah, I too was on his MSG Board and was one among the many who suggested Punisher MAX, so hopefully that will happen once this three writers are done.  I do have a question though: are you not reading Scalped?  Because if not, why?  It's his best book, never mind one of the best books period.  The only reason you shouldn't is if you're too young to read it (however if you were, what are you doing reading a Punisher MAX book, hm? *joking*).  Otherwise, do yourself a favor and get the first trade.  It's only $10 and Jason Aaron has a money-back guarantee on it.  I'm always bewildered when people read every superhero book by a writer, and love that writer, but don't read their non-superhero/indie book, which is usually the best thing they do, and usually in need of a bigger audience.  If you enjoy Aaron you owe it to yourself to read Scalped.  If you already are and I'm just ranting here for no reason, carry on. ;)

Posted by CGPO on 12/02/08 at 01:48 PM

Reading everything of his but Scalped makes absolutely no sense.  Get on it, dude!

Posted by SunnyvaleTrash on 12/02/08 at 05:09 PM

I did read the first trade of scalped! And sad to say it wasnt my cup of tea. Maybe the beginning is a bit wonky compared to the other issues but I just didnt like it as much as the other stuff I read of Aaron's.

Posted by TheNextChampion on 12/03/08 at 01:02 AM

@TNC- So let me get this straight, you absolutely love what Grant Morrison is doing on Batman, but you don't like Scalped?  I think I have met my complete opposite when it comes to taste in comic books. ;)

Posted by Kory on 12/03/08 at 01:47 AM

@Champ -- That's cool, man, I'm glad you're on board the Aaron-train! But, I totally agree with CGPO & Sunnyvale, Scalped is the best thing he writes or has written, & I have every comic he done (literally). If it's not the best book on the stands, it's equal best -- nothing is better.

@comicdork -- I hope you're right! The $3.99 books are a ball breaker. Might be time to switch to ALL trades soon. *gasp*

Impulse.net lists it as 48 pages, for what it's worth.  May have to grab this.  Never read any Aaron.

Posted by chiefjoe on 12/03/08 at 01:18 PM

Even his Ghost Rider run, which has a ton of ridiculous contuinity and ret-con shit to deal with, has been really fun.

Posted by SunnyvaleTrash on 12/03/08 at 02:32 PM

i just hope the inside art isn't jarring in comparison to the cover, i always hate that

Posted by RoiVampire on 12/03/08 at 04:33 PM

God that is a gorgeous cover, why isnt Bachelo doing the interiors in here?

Jason Aaron as writer and Chris Bachelo as artist, that is a Punisher book I would love to see.

Posted by TheNextChampion on 12/03/08 at 04:36 PM

@chiefjoe: Welcome to the fold, hope you enjoy. If you like what you read, pick up the first trade of Scalped (or all of them), the Wolverine: Get Mystique trade and the Otherside (from Vertigo) for starters. Aaron is also currently writing Ghost Rider and Wolverine Manifest Destiny if interested in more.

Posted by comicdork37 on 12/03/08 at 05:03 PM

Roland Boschi was Aaron's GHOST RIDER artist before the current guy.

5.2 out of 5?

Posted by goat77 on 12/04/08 at 07:56 PM

Holy crap!

Did Punisher do what I think he just did to that pregnaut lady!? O_o;

Posted by TheNextChampion on 12/06/08 at 01:50 AM

Apparently my shop has a new "no more one-shots policy".

Posted by Kory on 12/06/08 at 08:01 AM

@thenextchampion scalped was a little bit of a slow starter, but kicked its shit into high gear with casino boogie and has been consistantly the most satisfying book month in month out.  aarron hands down is the best new talent in comics.  hes the only writer who could follow Ennis' great run.  And lets give some props to Bachalo for that cover.  i loved it the moment i saw it, and would love to see him do a full issue's interiors.

One of the more bats**t insanely violent/violently insane tales you are likely to read. It's both deadpan funny & horrorific at the same time. These characters do things that books or movies often threaten & tease, but stop before acting on the impulse. This one may end up being legendary. Love the cover, too.

Posted by Doctor13 on 12/07/08 at 02:36 PM

oh my god. i freakin love Jason Aaron

Posted by rayclark on 12/07/08 at 02:54 PM

@Champ -- She wasn't pregnant no more when he did it. ;)

This was AWESOME. So many great moments & lines.

"I'm ready to settle up." as Santa pulls an assault rifle from his sack.

"Don't shoot! I'm presbyterian!" Made me laugh out loud.

And a baby being born in a stable! Everything you could want in a tale for the holidays.

Awesome book. My POW.

This is the best Punisher Christmas one-shot yet.  Roland Boschi's art seems to be more at home with the Punisher than Ghost Rider.  Jason Aaron cannot become the writer of Punisher MAX soon enough.

Posted by ghostwriter on 12/08/08 at 02:17 PM

This was brutal, even compared to some of the stuff Ennis wrote on Punisher. I loved it! Aaron needs to be writing this monthly.
