Between this and Mighty Avengers Marvel seems to be trying to give their magic sect a good shot in the arm. Hopefully it sticks I really enjoyed last issue.

This cover art is awesome!  New Avengers has been ass-kicking for too long now.

Posted by KickAss on 04/20/09 at 06:00 PM

Again I know I dont pick this up but like last week:

Awwww you guys got Bachelo on art? Lucky

Posted by TheNextChampion on 04/20/09 at 07:00 PM

Yes, we were lucky it was half decent last issue!

I kid, I kid!

Posted by Andrew on 04/20/09 at 08:06 PM

I love the Hood, but the first issue of this arc didn't grab me. Maybe I'll give it a go, I'm just not sure yet.

Posted by Anson17 on 04/20/09 at 08:19 PM

I like this book...but i read GL:Rebirth...now i need to drop a monthly (cause i think im gonna follow GL) and unfortunatly its this or DA. We'll see after this issue.

Posted by Fvckstick on 04/20/09 at 09:20 PM

Is $3.99 the new regular price on this book, or is this an over-sized issue?

Posted by Kirkerson on 04/20/09 at 10:31 PM

does anyone remember when this was actually good? ah, those were good times

Posted by edward on 04/20/09 at 10:34 PM

$3.99 hurts, basically 5 bucks for me in Canada. Is it worth it?

Posted by yearofmark on 04/20/09 at 11:58 PM

Regular price now, it hurts, but its worth it. Only behind Scalped and Thor for this week in terms of quality (not reading invincible, although I want to.)

Posted by Ruo21 on 04/21/09 at 01:08 AM

This would be so much better if Bachalo wasn't on it, then maybe I could actually tell what's going on in each panel.

Posted by shogunt on 04/21/09 at 09:27 AM

@shogunt - Yeah, usually but the Bachalo made it very clear and obvious last issue.

Posted by SamMorgan on 04/21/09 at 09:56 AM

I'm not normally a Bachalo fan, but his stuff was really good in the last issue.

Posted by conor on 04/21/09 at 10:28 AM

Love Bachalo's work...psyched he's doing this. Storywise I heard they spend the entire issue ordering lunch, I can't wait!!

Posted by AlexG on 04/21/09 at 11:59 AM

Not reading this, but can someone tell me, are they really making a disciple of Dormammu a viable replacement for Dr. Strange?

Posted by Urthona on 04/21/09 at 01:17 PM

Well, it's Dark Reign after all so a disciple of Dormammu as Sorcerer Supreme kind of makes sense. However, I think this is part one of three of the "Lunch Pail" arc in which the team tries to order from Lennies but they can't decide if they should get the special meatball subs or not. Part two of the arc is them waiting for delivery and Part three is a crossover with Ghost Rider who accidentally runs over the deliveryman.

Posted by AlexG on 04/21/09 at 02:05 PM

@Urthona  well there's not really a committee that selects the new SS. It's just kinda handed down or, at some points in history, forcibly taken.

Posted by RoiVampire on 04/21/09 at 02:27 PM

I don't care about the SS I want to get back to the smackdown between the NA and the DA

Posted by voodoomama on 04/21/09 at 09:07 PM

Bachalo's art has to fit the subject matter. Loved his Spider-Man arc. Not so much his X-Men. Dr. Strange is a perfect fit.

Posted by patio on 04/21/09 at 10:59 PM

I agree with patio, this magic stuff seems to fit Bachalo's style.  I really liked his image of the Hood stalking towards Strange in the diner.

Posted by MisterJ on 04/21/09 at 11:09 PM

@MisterJ Yeah that was probably the most disurbing image i've seen in mainstream books so far this year. man that was just an unnerving image

Posted by RoiVampire on 04/22/09 at 10:09 AM

This issue just felt of to me and I didn't figure out why until the end. Nobody had their own personality. Everyone was finishing each others sentences. Now for Luke and Jessica that would make sense, but not when it starts to come off like a word game that the whole group is playing.

Also, almost every line of dialogue between the team could have been said by anybody. Nobody felt like they were their own person. They were all being the exact same cut and paste smartass. Spider-man is funny when he's being a smartass, but not when he is just one of 8 or 9 in smartass round table.

Posted by Parker on 04/22/09 at 01:38 PM

This was a relatively weak issue. The art was particularly disappointing. I am hooked on Dr. Strange, however, so I will continue to read New Avengers. Parker is right - the dialogue was weak. Would Clint Barton describe the Eye of Agamoto as "the magical hoohah"? (Maybe he would, but it sounds dumb).

Posted by coltrane68 on 04/22/09 at 02:56 PM

I really love Bachalos art. The 2 part story he did in ASM about Hammerhead was fantastic. I thought only the first 2 pages he did in the last issue were neccessary.

Posted by Ruo21 on 04/22/09 at 06:01 PM

i don't get it, Bachalo's art was exactly like it always is in the last issue. i love the dude, partiularly when he has a good inker

Posted by edward on 04/22/09 at 08:33 PM

I was gonna drop this with last issue. However I am soooo hooked now. And good for Spidey to stick to his morals, when all the other "Heros" are at "war", lol Great stuff from BMB.

Posted by yearofmark on 04/22/09 at 11:09 PM

As far as I'm concerned, this book is bulletproof.  He knows what he's doing;  he knows where he's going;  and 52 issues in, he ain't let me down yet.

Now if he could just get a regular artist.....oh?  In three issues?  Ok, then it will be perfect. (Ahhh, NOT Bachalo?!?  Damn!)

Posted by Chuckenigma on 04/22/09 at 11:24 PM

What Chuckenigma said.

Posted by Diabhol on 04/23/09 at 01:32 AM

@Patio   I agree, Bachalo doesn't get near enough credit as he should. The guy is just awesome.

Posted by mikefederalidotcom on 04/23/09 at 05:07 AM

The layouts for the scene with the hood and madam masque were just breathtaking

Posted by RoiVampire on 04/23/09 at 02:37 PM

I really liked the Hellcat part, showing the isolation of Alaska.  That part, and Spidey talking about theft were the only two parts that did not feel like forced humor to me.

Posted by MisterJ on 04/24/09 at 10:47 AM

Bachelo Art = Great. Tan Art = Why did he bother ???

Posted by UsagiNunn on 04/24/09 at 01:11 PM

Being a Wiccan fan, I dug the relationship he has with Strange in this issue.  I figure he won't be SS, but it might rope him into the NA universe the same way Statue and Vision got roped into MA.

Posted by paeryn on 04/25/09 at 11:18 AM

Good issue. Bendis is great at the team dynamic when the Avengers are having a meeting or flying somewhere, he really captures them all really well.

Posted by Fvckstick on 04/25/09 at 03:00 PM

UGGGGHH!!! Story: fine. Dialogue: not Bendis's best but good. Art: vomit inducing.
I couldn't figure out what the hell was going on w/ the Bachalo stuff! I liked him on Spidey, but here it's just too confusing and muddled.
Tan can go lick a toad, I can't wait 'til he's off the book. I think Immonen's coming on issue 55, but... please, Stuart won'tcha just start on 53? Just re-draw whatever blech Tan did, I'm sure your rushed version of his regular work will look much better.

Posted by captbastrd on 04/25/09 at 05:14 PM

The art and story were great, however I felt the dialogue in this issue was lacking (Dr. Strange: That is SO odd), however, overall it was great, I gave it a 5/5.
