The storytelling started sliding in the stories featured in this volume. Scarlet Scarab and the Teutonic Knight just weren’t as interesting as the intros of Spitfire, Mighty Destroyer and Warrior Woman.
While he’s an acquired taste, Frank Robbins was well-suited for this series — bringing an energetic, yet quirkly style that somehow recalled the Golden Age era. Frank Springer stayed on for a while as inker, but he and Alan didn’t have the same kind of spark. I think Kupperberg’s artwork actually looked better after Springer left.
It was also during this era where Gil Kane stopped doing covers for Marvel — a big loss.
