HAWKEYE #12

The sleeper hit of 2012 is now the can’t miss book of 2013 (and probably the overhyped book you’re sick of people talking about in 2014!)

Reeling from the events of the last issue, even Hawkeye wants to know what his new status quo is. Who’s with him? Who’s against him? Who’s trying to kill him and why? So many dang questions!

And just when Clint’s rock bottom couldn’t arrive fast enough. . . ‘Then Came Barney’

  1. The last issue was probably the weakest in the series thus far. I’m hoping this issue turns it around and gets back to the awesomeness that was Hawkeye.

    • What!?! I normally can’t stand the “silent issue” but I thought last issue was amazing. The art, panel layouts, and visual conveyance of a dog’s perspective were amazing. Not the best of the series but top 5.

    • Agreed it wasn’t the best one in the series, but it was pretty neat. Didn’t feel like a waste or a filler.

Just didn’t think it was ‘pick of the week’ material.

    • I don’t think the issue was filler but, like Josh on the podcast, I feel like I’ve read/seen stories like this enough to the point where their novelty has worn off. They aren’t magical and unique to me any more. They’re just textless stories that typically lack any emotional resonance. Had the dog been killed or done… Something worthy of note, then maybe I would feel differently about the comic.

I have voraciously read this series and been a strong proponent of it. When I finish every issue, I have a smile on my face. Last issue, ended with a shrug. I have never felt that way about this series. I was shocked and more than a little disappointed. Doubly so when I went online and everyone was giving it glowing reviews. I’m glad the comic worked for other people but it did absolutely nothing for me. 🙁

    • @scarlet-batman: I agree that the silent issue is overdone but I think this was an incredibly unique take on it. I’ve never seen one from an animal’s perspective like this that so well captures how an animal might see and interpretate the world. Simply because this is a textless issue shouldn’t lump it in with every other textless issue. I’ve personally never see one approached in this manner.

    • This wasn’t textless. This had little bits of dialogue and tons of pictures to tell the story. I’m not trying to tell anyone how to think or feel, but this was very unique, heartfelt, and even exciting. It was a glimpse into.Clint’s life from his dog’s perspective. I felt like it added it a lot.

    • I’m with Scarlet-Batman on this one. I didn’t hate it, but I did feel like I didn’t get an issue of Hawkeye that week. Looking forward to another so soon.

  2. After the incredibly creative last issue, and then Kate leaving town with that clown killer on the loose, its going to be interesting to see what this issue brings. Plus Francavilla is always great and his work 2 issues ago was no different. I love the in and out, ebb and flow, that this title brings. Some readers may feel like its off track, but I think it really adds to the Sit Com that is Hawkeye.

  3. I hope my store has the Vol 2 TPB so I can read that baby and get this issue and be all caught up!

  4. Another Francavilla issue? Alright i’m in:)

  5. Took a bit of getting used to with Francavilla’s art last time, but having read #10 and Batwoman #21, I’m all for him working with Fraction, and I’m really enjoying his artwork now.

  6. I miss the early one-and-done issues, this continuing story just isn’t really doing it for me.

  7. FF for president of Comic Book Art.

  8. Didn’t this just come out a couple weeks ago? Is it bi-monthly now?

  9. I love this comic so much. Every issue surprises me with something cool. I was really trying to think has there ever been a mainstream in continuity superhero comic quite like this? The closest comparison I could think of is Morrison’s anything goes style for Animal Man but toned down by about 100 and even that’s a stretch. And for a writer that I had completely lost interest in when this started coming out Fraction seems to have completely transferred his sensibilities onto this series and it’s great. I think this is the best comic coming out of the Big Two and the only series that I like better then this being published right now is Saga.

  10. I got a few more comics to read, but as of right now this one is the best contender for POTW.

  11. Solid issue. Did Hawkguy always have a brother and a drunken father? I always thought he was raised by circus folk, but I suppose everyone has to come from some where. I like both Aja’s and Frankavilla’s art, I think both styles work for different tones. Aja is a bit more light hearted, which is the opposite of Francavilla.

  12. Excellent issue, this series is just such a treat and Fraction is knocking it out of the park every time.

  13. This was a gut-wrenching issue. I felt bad for Barney almost from the jump (the blue coloring set the mood). Powerful, emotional issue. I never know what to expect here but I’m never disappointed. So good. I liked how we saw the first beat down from Lucky’s (Arrow, dog, whatever) perspective last issue. Very cool. Beautifully rendered by Francesco Francavilla. His page layouts are splendid.

  14. Another good issue. I don’t know much about Clint’s Brother so it was nice to see him and some of the Brother’s history growing up in this one. And of course anytime you have the Tracksuit Draculas it’s a can’t miss. 😉
