I’ve always loved Starlin from back in the Infinity Gauntlet days, and he’s really been knocking it out of the park on this mini-series. Especially the art, some of Starlin’s more recent small-press cosmic stories have made his art look pretty lazy, but this stuff is just spectacular.
I just recently became a fan of Jim Starlin when Mystery in Space was running. It’s disappointing that more people haven’t been reading Death of the New Gods because it’s been brilliant. I love Starlin’s writing and his art, and although his own style is unique, you do see his Kirby inspiration.
Pick up the TP if nothing else. This was very important to Countdown and to Final Crisis.
Read Rann/Thanagar Holy War! It’ll be brilliant too.
Without a doubt the only good thing that has come out of the steaming pile of
horseshitthat is countdown. This will probably be the best superhero comic out this week. Starlin is writing and drawing the hell out of this series. Pity those not fortunate enough to read DotNG.
Hope the Orion/Darkseid battle in Countdown #2 is touched on.
Is Superman sad, happy, angry, grieving or all of the above on this cover?
Given the events in the book, all of the above is most likely.
Sigh…I just wish last week’s Countdown didn’t take the steam out of this mini. I guess I know at least two new gods who make it out of this alive.
Still, this has been one great mini. Long live Starlin at DC! Bring on the next mini!
Gotta admit I was a little "meh" about this series for the first few issues. Jim’s art was touch and go and his attempts to write snappy banter in the midst of the old school cosmic dialogue came up short.
But staying with it has paid off as Starlin’s work got better and better! I’m betting this finale has the same mind-blowing art that we saw in issue 7.
@Andrew– I think he ate a whole bag of pizza combos right before bed.
So far I have not been overly fond of this title. I have only read up to (and including) issue 6 so far and it has left me really feeling "so what?" I did have pretty high hopes for it so maybe my expectations got the better of me. I just feel that given the story that it didn’t really achieve the gravitas that it needed to be truely great.
Here’s hoping that things pick up in issues 7 and 8.
Seems like no-one really told Starlin what was going to happen over in COUNTDOWN. In DEATH OF… we end up with a mute, energy construct Orion…in COUNTDOWN Orion is solid and talkative.
And New Genesis and Apokolips merged? That was so wicked COOL…when Byrne did it over 10 years ago.
