Sweet Tooth #1
From out of the deep woods and the mind of acclaimed indie cartoonist Jeff Lemire (THE NOBODY, The Essex County Trilogy) comes a new Vertigo monthly ongoing series like no other! After being raised in total isolation, Gus - a boy born with deer-like antlers - is left to survive in an American landscape devastated a decade earlier by an inexplicable pandemic. Even more remarkable is that Gus is part of a rare new breed of human/animal hybrid children who have emerged in its wake, all apparently immune to the infection.
Enter Jepperd, a violent, hulking drifter who soon takes in Gus and promises to lead him to "The Preserve," a fabled safe-haven for hybrid children. Along the way they'll have to contend with science militias, deadly scavengers, rival bounty hunters, and hybrid worshipping cultists as they fight to make it to safety and solve the mysteries of this deadly new frontier.
This bizarre and haunting new series is boldly written and illustrated by Eisner-nominated creator Jeff Lemire and elegantly colored by fellow Eisner nominee Jose Villarubia. A little boy with antlers, a big man with guns, a world without hope - SWEET TOOTH #1 ships in September for only $1.00! Plus, don't miss a free preview of this title in August's JACK OF FABLES #37!

Aw, this one's normal sized... oh well. This $1 first issue deal is perfect. As bad as Greek Street was, I don't care, because it was only a dollar.
Posted by Slockhart on 08/31/09 at 05:09 PMSO EXCITED
Posted by skeets on 08/31/09 at 05:44 PMIf my LCS (which is in Toronto, where Lemire lives) fails to pull this for me and sells out before I get there on Wednesday, I will be moving my pull list to a new LCS. Mark my words.
Posted by Harper on 08/31/09 at 06:01 PMSweetness!! I can't wait to read this. Hope it's good stuff
Posted by drakedangerz on 08/31/09 at 06:08 PMgreek street is not bad!
Posted by greekst on 08/31/09 at 06:18 PMThis sounds like a much better comic then Greek Street or Unwritten.
I'd buy that for a dollar!
Posted by TheNextChampion on 08/31/09 at 06:38 PMso does greekst work for Dc or something?
i'm very excited for this comic. come on, Jeff!
Posted by edward on 08/31/09 at 06:47 PMLove Unwritten, Greek Street wasn't for me. I love The Nobody and the little bit of Essex County I've read. Jeff Lemire is a name to remember. I think this title will reinforce his strengths, star, backwoods, and beautiful.
Posted by Rustyautoparts on 08/31/09 at 06:52 PMStark, that is.
Posted by Rustyautoparts on 08/31/09 at 06:53 PMI've heard so much good stuff about the Essex County books, there's no way I'm not picking this book up. Especially for $1!
Posted by androidmoser on 08/31/09 at 07:46 PMThis is going to be a gem. Anyone who has read any of Lemire's earlier work knows that.
Posted by miyamotofreak on 08/31/09 at 07:47 PMI think that Fallout Boy video has ruined this for me :D, but at 1 dollar I'll surely give it a shot.
Posted by MacAoidh on 08/31/09 at 08:02 PMI picked up the Essex County collected edition last week. It is a collection to treasure. Just be prepared to weep openly at it's aching sadness.
Posted by Crippler on 08/31/09 at 08:17 PMJust read The Nobody. Can't wait to get more of Jeff's work, especially monthly
Posted by drakedangerz on 08/31/09 at 09:04 PMOh man. This anthropomorphic stuff gives me the willies. This will be a Furries delight. I'll pass.
Posted by ryry on 08/31/09 at 11:09 PMI think this could be the next great vertigo epic.
Posted by WinTheWonderboy on 08/31/09 at 11:26 PMGoing to be so strange to see Lemire's stuff in full colour, but can't wait. I hope this finds an audience and has a decent run.
On a side note, I love the Constantine and Dr. Strange sketches that Lemire did for me. Great guy.
Posted by SunnyvaleTrash on 09/01/09 at 12:12 AMCan't wait for this, I've been looking forward to it for a while.
Posted by balsalm on 09/01/09 at 12:17 AMI'll check this out for a dollar (well, 2 here :P), but I can't see this as being something I'll be way into. Happy to be proven wrong, though!
Posted by WadeWilson on 09/01/09 at 01:58 AM
I just read essex county and the nobody this week and they were incredible. I'm interested to see how his use of space and pacing will translate to an ongoing series but I'm definitely on board.
Posted by musicologist86 on 09/01/09 at 03:13 AMIs this an ongoing or a mini? Or one of those Vertifo 60-issue runs?
Posted by Zeppo on 09/01/09 at 07:56 AMI'm going into this almost completely blind. I've heard lots of buzz but since it didn't catch my attention at first I didn't really pay any attention. I'm looking forward to reading this now and for $1 its worth a look.
Posted by ato220 on 09/01/09 at 08:13 AM@Zeppo: I am assuming it's going to be the standard Vertigo ongoing. 5-6 year run barring cancellation.
Posted by SunnyvaleTrash on 09/01/09 at 10:05 AM@edward I think it's Peter Milligan.
Posted by magnum240 on 09/01/09 at 10:47 AMThe preview saw didn't impress me much in the art department. I'm down for anything that is only a dollar though, even Barney! LOL, Barney...
If I like it, I'll check out Essex County. After all, I do live in NJ.
Posted by robbydzwonar on 09/01/09 at 12:17 PMCan't wait to check this out. Any comic is worth $1!
Posted by tundra78 on 09/01/09 at 12:32 PMCANNOT WAIT 4 FOR THIS BOOK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Posted by Osyris on 09/01/09 at 12:52 PMsince its only a buck i'll pick it up but unless it absolutely wow's me i cant say I'll keep getting it.
Posted by Patman2 on 09/01/09 at 09:33 PMHard to resist the $1 price point, but I can already tell this is something I'd enjoy more in a solid chunk of trade. Dammit, they hooked me tho
Posted by AlexG on 09/02/09 at 10:15 AMMy shop didn't order any copies. Guess I'll be waiting 'til next week.
Posted by stuclach on 09/02/09 at 01:31 PMFor those of you who don't follow Jeff Lemire's blog/twitter, Jeff is offering to sign every issue of Sweet Tooth #1 and also draw a free sketch for each copy you mail him. If you send him 100 books, he'll sign all of them and ship them back with 100 sketches. Info is on his blog. At a dollar a pop, I might buy more than one.

Posted by Rustyautoparts on 09/02/09 at 01:44 PMI already have a Dr. Strange and Constantine sketch, but I would love to get something else from him. This may be difficult to decide. I think he probably works best when the people are somewhat normal looking.
Posted by SunnyvaleTrash on 09/02/09 at 02:10 PMGreat first issue.
Introduces me to the style of Lemire and I loved every page of this. This is the first $1 Vertigo comic I can say I want to follow. Can't wait to see where this series is going to take us.
Posted by TheNextChampion on 09/02/09 at 03:38 PMI am impressed that TNC liked this. A good sign ;)
Posted by SunnyvaleTrash on 09/02/09 at 04:49 PMVertigo fucked up with the preview.
Posted by rockingeek on 09/02/09 at 05:35 PMyeah I read the preview then read the issue and I had expected more
Posted by alezerker on 09/02/09 at 07:26 PMI went in to the blind and thought it hit it out of the ballpark. Great set up. This story has so much potential that I have no idea where it is headed towards.
Posted by wayne2001bc on 09/02/09 at 11:51 PMVery impressive. Not my pick, but enjoyed the hell out of it. Hooked me enough to want to pick it up in singles (the only Vertigo book I'm doing that with at the moment)
Posted by drakedangerz on 09/03/09 at 01:02 AMI enjoyed reading this comic. I can't wait to see what happens!!
Posted by noremacikkin on 09/03/09 at 02:06 AMI liked The Nobody and really liked this. I hope it catches on and becomes a big thing because it seems like it deserves it. The stuff poor Gus has gone through already is quite sad and I'm already rooting for him. I definitely need to go back and read Essex County now.
Posted by ProjectX2 on 09/03/09 at 07:25 AMI completely agree. The way Lemire draws poor Gus, makes u immediately feel sorry for him. There is also i very innocent nature about him. Can't wait to see the dynamic between Gus & Jeppard. Awesome 1st issue. Lemire can do no wrong.
POTW......BY A MILE!!!!!!!!!!!
Posted by Osyris on 09/03/09 at 09:08 AMExcellent first issue. Sets up everything, but still had time for Lemire's characteristic quiet moments. His art looks great coloured too!
Posted by SunnyvaleTrash on 09/03/09 at 10:03 AMSOB. TNC likes this? I may as well just take it back.
Posted by jobob247 on 09/03/09 at 11:01 AMWhat a great issue. Definitely a front-runner for POW, though I haven't finished all of my books yet. The art is gorgeous and Jeff Lemire is definitely a master of creating a feeling and an aura throughout his books. Can't wait to see where we go from here. 5/5.
Posted by kwisdumb on 09/03/09 at 06:40 PMIsolation, alienation, subjugation! MAYHEM!!! Saw the IF interview with the creator and thought "meh." But I saw how many pulls it had and then saw it was only $1. I am sooo glad I picked it up. Bizarre and unique. A great setup. Consider me on board.
Posted by RickyUnstoppable on 09/03/09 at 11:22 PMEnjoyable, if not a little light on content.
Can't wait for some more.
Posted by Xomneon on 09/04/09 at 10:34 AMThis was excellent, as expected. I am never reading a preview ever again.
Posted by Rustyautoparts on 09/04/09 at 03:57 PMShould have gotten on board with this sooner. Excellent read. 5/5 for me.
Posted by PraxJarvin on 09/05/09 at 11:00 PMIt was good enough for me to check out the next issue but I'm not as gaga for it as others seem to be. Reminds me of 'The Village' movie from M. Night Shyamalan.
Posted by Chaddiwicker on 09/06/09 at 05:27 PMAnother Horror Comic Book Genre awesome can't wait to buy it.
Posted by evil09 on 09/06/09 at 08:15 PMIt was alright.
Posted by skeets on 09/07/09 at 12:28 AMwhat the flip?
Posted by theegreatone on 09/07/09 at 02:31 AMHoly shit #2 on iFanboy!
Posted by miyamotofreak on 09/07/09 at 05:55 AMGo for number one! Numbah one!
Posted by miyamotofreak on 09/07/09 at 03:31 PMThis was a extremely thin 1st issue even for $1. There is more information in the solicit then in the issue. I can't even say whether I dislike it because I still have no idea what is going on (and not in a good way).
Posted by Spoons on 09/07/09 at 08:39 PMThis is potentially my new favourite comic.
Posted by deadspace on 09/08/09 at 05:50 AMThere need to be more artists like this. I want to see an ongoing Batman series done by Jeff Lemire.
Posted by SteenAR on 09/12/09 at 03:52 AM

I love this $1 first issue approach. I am prepared to be unsettled by this issue.
