Crossed #5 (OF 9)
The most controversial series of the year continues as Garth Ennis pulls out all the stops to write the most twisted book of his career! Cindy and her rag-tag team of fellow survivors are still on the run, but now the Crossed has focused all their energy on a vicious new game: bringing as much pain and suffering to the survivors as they can! Nothing is going right, but this is no fairy tale - there are no magic cures on the horizon. When civilization crumbles in one terrifying moment; when people are gleefully breaking into unthinkable acts of violence all around you; when everyone you love has died screaming in agony: What do you do? There is no help. There is no hope. There is no escape. There are only the Crossed! This stomach-churning vision is brought to vivid (and more than a little disturbing) life by his partner in crime Jacen Burrows. This fearsome fifth issue is available with a Regular or Wraparound cover by Burrows as well as a rare Red Crossed Edition featuring a striking Black, White and Red cover by Burrows.

I enjoy the utter morbidity of the story line. Truly graphic good stuff.

Posted by kwisdumb on 05/29/09 at 10:55 AMAgreed, seemed like Ennis was playing catch up on the character interaction and development. That's fine but I was a bit bored with this issue. I wanted a little "zombie torture porn" mixed in.
Posted by WetWork on 05/29/09 at 11:25 AMAlthough I missed the "torture porn" in this issue I thought the character development and exposition was excellent in this issue. I think as a middle issue this was really good and gave caught us up on the characters so that we might feel something for them in the final half of the story (which I assume is going to get crazy). I feel like this is the calm before the storm.
On a somewhat related note I saw in the newest Previews that issue #9 is going to be 40 pages and 4.99. Just FYI.
Posted by comicdork37 on 05/29/09 at 07:29 PMIt was definatly one of the slower issues, but i guess i just love Ennis' characters he creates and the interactions that occur. The scene of comming out of the closet was just a great conversation. I think i dig Ennis so much that he could do a whole series of people talking while pissing in the woods.
Posted by Fvckstick on 05/29/09 at 07:59 PMWow, surprising to see such negative comments here. I thought this issue was great. People are always saying Ennis is nothing but "shock" factor & violence (obviously those people haven't read much of his work) but, this issue showed why I personally think he is an awesome writer. Character develpment, humour & dialogue. He does those three things as good as anyone else in comics (IMO) & even though this issue would disappoint the gore-hounds, I liked it a lot. Not everyday in a zombie apocolypse would be blood & carnage (I'm speaking from experience, obviously), some days would be just be about waiting for the next horrible thing to happen.

Not sure how I feel about this series anymore. Let's hope this one does it big.
