ACTION COMICS ANNUAL #13

While present-day Lex Luthor is busy fighting an array of the DCU’s most vile foes over in ACTION COMICS, this annual takes a look back at two formative encounters Luthor had before he became the bald mad genius we know and love (to hate) today! Marco Rudy illustrates a story of young Lex and Darkseid, while Ed Benes tackles a tale starring Luthor and Batman foe Ra’s al Ghul!

I’m usually not big on annuals these days, but stories about Lex meeting Darkseid and Ra’s? I’m down.

  6. Darkseid is badass.

  7. PraxJarvin PraxJarvin says:

Nice touch by Van Sciver on Lex’s pose on the cover.

  9. Was thinking of passing on this….but then I saw Marco Rudy’s name and it makes me want to buy it more so.

Well this is definitely going to be my POTW since Brightest Day is the only other book getting pulled this week.

  11. i usually love annuals….but only from the dollar bin. lol. I do love Cornells run with Lex so i might just give this a try…

Gorgeous cover. Very interested to see Lex up against these two villains.

  13. Cedric Cedric says:

This was awesome. The Darkseidstory had really nice visuals, and the Ra’s Al Ghul Story was told like a centuries old tale, befitting for a story centered around an immortal.

Ready your mind! There’s a danger it might be blown!!
Panel of the week material.  Fun issue.

  15. mikeandzod21 mikeandzod21 says:

This would’ve been POTW if not for the god-awful layouts. A great story with pretty good art almost ruined by just the absolutel worst layouts I’ve ever seen.

  16. Franktiger Franktiger says:

Those geometrical layouts were amazing, visually stunning, great original work by Rudy imo.

  17. bjbancroft bjbancroft says:

@ Franktiger I definitely enjoyed the layouts as well.

I took issue with the writing here though. Am I the only one?? It was definitely not up to par with the regular issues of Action Comics, where Cornell is absolutely killing it. Both stories were contrived and over the top. Maybe it’s just me…and don’t give me some nonsensical argument about how these are stories about gods and immortals and all this. Obviously I realize that. The stories just weren’t very logical.
