‘Young Justice’ – S02E17 – “The Hunt”

Young Justice_The Hunt

“I’m not writing an epitaph here. But the nature of the business is that you never know if you’re going to be picked up for more episodes or issues. So whether it’s Captain Atom, Gargoyles, W.I.T.C.H., The Spectacular Spider-Man or Young Justice, I always try to end each season or run at a good place to stop, with what I like to call open-ended closure. So with the Young Justice book and show, Brandon [Vietti] and I tied up enough threads that the audience/reader can feel satisfied, but we’ve left some questions unanswered, some threads dangling intentionally, so that we have the chance to come back. And I would love to come back to this world, these characters. Believe me.” – Young Justice creator Greg Weisman in a recent interview.

Here’s how “The Hunt” is described:

A band of misfits is put to the test when Lex Luthor sends them behind enemy lines … to rescue the team!

I look forward to your thoughts, opinions, gripes, live-blogging, etc.

  1. Experiencing mixed emotions with each new episode. Excitement to watch a new episode and dread that we are one more closer to the end.

  2. Great great episode (although GL won again this week in my book). It makes so much sense that Static would ride on a manhole cover instead of a trashcan lid. I love all the plot twists at the end, and running threads coming together. Was anybody else surprised at Gordon Godfrey’s 360 on the Reach? The “Justice Farm Animals” was hilarious as well, getting all the character’s quirks in just a few seconds. Cue Lightening! (Sidenote: at the end of the episode did anybody notice 99% of the comic con interviews were women? Seriously, after the Joker guy it was all women after. Just something I noticed; come to think of it, weren’t they all characters tied to Batman as well?).

    • They almost made it seem Godfrey had journalistic integrity!

I thought Gordan’s turn was bit strange too but when you consider that the guy is actually an agent of Darkseid it’s not all that surprising. I’m convinced that the next season would have featured the New Gods. Heavy use of Gordan this season, boom tubes, father boxes, sphere (who don’t forget is actually the Forever People’s super-cycle) was all pointing to Darkseid and the New Gods. A shame we won’t get to see that story due to the cancellation.

    • @Mister: You echoed all of my thoughts exactly. It’s a shame we won’t get to see Darkseid invade and the other New Gods. Of course, that’s assuming that they don’t cram that in the final few episodes. Which I kind of hope they don’t do.

    • @Conor, I find your lack of faith disturbing. Originally I thought Gordon was a patsy of the Reach (he’s always someone’s after all) since he welcomed then with open arms for their public debut. But given how xenophobic he is, it was only a matter of time before some tension developed. Ive just started reading Jack Kirby’s “Fourth World Omnibus volume 1” and saw the Forever People driving Sphere. I would prefer if YJ didn’t cover Darksied and the New Gods since Bruce Timm covered them so well in “Superman TAS” and “JLU”. I’m sure they’d do a great job, but I’ve enjoyed this show for covering stuff I havent seen yet in the DCU ( the Reach, the Light). Can someone give me a brief bio about Fatherboxes? Are they pretty much motherboxes, just from Apopkolips? I’m still holding on to the small hope of this show coming back because of the quote above in the description, but I doubt they’d shoehorn all the New Gods stuff on top of everything else they have to resolve. Say what you want about how the story’s progressed, it’s been tightly/carefully woven so far.

    • @IthoSapien: While I doubt that they will have Darkseid and The New Gods appear at the end of this season in any meaningful way (again, though it is possible), you’re right that the show has been tightly plotted–but it has been tightly plotted to set-up a Darkseid invasion story (if I had to guess–it would have been this season’s cliff-hanger and next season’s main plot driver). It has taken elements from the LEGENDS story that involved G. Gordon Godfrey (actually Glorious Godfrey in disguise) who appeared on Earth to stir up anti-superhero sentiment in preparation for Darkseid’s invasion, and mixed-in new stuff like The Reach. Not to mention the appearance and importance of all the New Gods tech that has been so prominent this season, as Mister notes above.

As for a Father Box, it’s the evil, Apokolptian version of The New Gods’ Mother Box.

    • Right, but from the way you phrased it, it sounded like you expected them to beat the Reach and then have Darkseid show up and fight them in 2 episodes. ” Of course, that’s assuming that they don’t cram that in the final few episodes. ” It would make sense for the New Gods stuff to happen next, with Godfrey and Sphere and all that already established, I would be fine if it was hinted at in the last minute of the final episode. That said, I feel would feel that story redundant if it happened next season (Earth once again invaded by a superior alien race that had infiltrated secretly in our society, who they are unprepared and outgunned to fight). I’m familiar with G.Gordon Gondfrey and his hatred/mistrust of metahumans (I’ve seen it happen in DC shows already, but only “Smallville” comes off the top of my head).

    • Like I said, I am not expecting it–I think it’s unlikely–but you never know.

    • Well you never know they may make a animated feature movie of Young Justice a la Dark Knight Returns or something. (hopes this happens)

    • I’ve been thinking about the possibility of an unofficial season 3, as well. Not that their popularity is anyway similar to YJ, but if you look at Family Guy and Futurama, it is possible for cancelled cartoons to be make a return. Perhaps YJ could jump to a different network. I like CharlieRock’s idea of a animated feature idea, possibly direct-to-dvd, like the B:TAS movies.

Here’s my dream scenario. YJ Season 2 sticks the landing in terms of story and emotion, and yet hints at things that would have occurred in Season 3. Fans immediately clamor for more. “This can’t be the end!” Execs at DC take notice and figure out a way to go on with the show, with or without Cartoon Network’s involvement but hopefully their blessing, perhaps with a royalty deal or some such.

The only way that happens is if the clamor results in a shit-ton of DVD and toy sales because that’s how FAMILY GUY and FUTURAMA came back as that’s the only clamor the network and DC Entertainment care about.

    • @conor: I am not saying it is likely. And, if the shows eventual return is tied to merch sales, we’re screwed. Toy sales aren’t really an option, as Mattel / Cartoon Network have stopped production on all YJ related toys. The toys sold poorly in the first place, which is why they killed the toy line. (I believe the lack of toy sales is what ultimately doomed the show.)

There *is* a YJ video game coming out in the future, so that may sell well, but it’s success will definitely be tied to how good the game is. If it is a bad game, only the die-hards, like me, will play it.

And, WB with their stupid DVD publishing practices, doesn’t inspire me to think that there will be a ton of DVD sales in the future. What I wouldn’t give for a BluRay version of YJ, but who knows if they will ever sell one.

Basically, I am admitting it’s a pipe dream. Oh well.

  3. Good ep. Question: Are these new kids and Arsenal the Outsiders? Doom Patrol?

    • You know, I had the same thought. Arsenal and The Outsiders? Arsenal and The Outlaws? (What little) Time will tell.

    • With the exception of Arsenal, they are characters from outside the proper Earth-1 multiverse, so they don’t really have a team name. You could call them the Super Friends, since Apache Chief and Samurai come from that show.

That gave me an idea, how awesome would it be if the Wonder Twins showed up in YJ? Who’s with me? Anyone? Okay, it’s just me. 🙁

  4. Great (as always) and I’d love to see more on Static and the others. I really tike the new “Apache Chief”.

  5. I want the “Apache Chief powers up” theme as my ringtone.
