YOUNG JUSTICE Coming Soon To Cartoon Network

In news sure to make fans of 1990s DC Comics happy, today the Cartoon Network announced their slate of upcoming shows and among the shows listed was Young Justice.

Here's how the Cartoon Network describes the show in their press release:

In Young Justice, being a teenager means proving yourself over and over—to peers, parents, teachers, mentors and, ultimately, to yourself. But what if you're not just a normal teenager? What if you're a teenage super hero? Are you ready to join the ranks of the great heroes and prove you're worthy of the Justice League? That's exactly what the members of Young Justice—Robin, Aqualad, Kid Flash, Superboy, Miss Martian and Artemis—will found out, whether they have what it takes to be a proven hero. This all-new series is produced by Warner Bros. Animation and based upon characters from DC Comics. Sam Register (Teen Titans, Ben 10, Batman: The Brave and the Bold) is the executive producer. Brandon Vietti (Batman: Under the Red Hood, Superman Doomsday, The Batman) and Greg Weisman (Gargoyles, The Spectacular Spider-Man, W.I.T.C.H.) are the producers.

I think what we're starting to see now is the first wave of DC Entertainment in action. When it was announced that Warner Bros. was forming DC Entertainment to focus on capitalizing more on DC Comics properties we full expected projects like these to start rolling out the door in Burbank and now here we are. And it sounds like there is more to come Over on the DC Blog, DC's new Chief Creative Officer Geoff Johns said “There’s much more to come from DC Entertainment, this is just the beginning.”

I don't know that there is a more passionate group of fans out their than Young Justice fans and I'm happy that, if they can't have reprints of the original series, they at least get a cartoon.

The debut date of the show was not indicated in the press release.

    !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  3. I’ll watch it.

  4. DWarren DWarren says:

Artemis?  I thought it was Arrowette?

Not fond of this Aqualad.  Would have preferred the Aquagirl from the Sub-Diego storyline.

  5. roadcrew1 roadcrew1 says:

as soon as I saw the heading, I thought that maybe this would lead to DC finally reprinting the series in trade

  6. Tiocore Tiocore says:

Really dig the character designs. It looks like a leap above what they were doing on the Teen Titans cartoon.

  7. smeeeeee smeeeeee says:

THIS IS GONNA BE SWEET! but artemis?? isnt she like 34? and kinda sucks without wondergirl cassie :(

  8. Conor Kilpatrick conor (@cskilpatrick) says:

@smeeeee: Artemis is whatever they want/need her to be.

  9. DWarren DWarren says:

I also wanted to say that i love that on iFanboy, when i click on a picture it creates a popup window that is the exact size of the picture, no extra stuff in the window and no scrolling.  I love it.  Not sure if it’s because i’m using Chrome, but BRAVO!

  10. smeeeeee smeeeeee says:

yea but i think they chose the wrong amazon

  11. Neb Neb says:

Awesome.  I’ll definitely check out the first episodes.  DC’s animation studio is way awesome.

  12. TheGoose TheGoose says:

I can’t wait to see the show. I love that they have Aqualad as a full time member.

  13. i’m sure wondergirl will make an appearance as a new member or something mid-season.

  14. Timmy Wood TimmyWood (@TimmyWood) says:

    YES!!!!!!!!!!

Now get on that trade program DC!

  15. patio patio says:

As a huge fan of the old YJ series, I find this to be really strange for a number of reasons. They revived the name, but not the look or the feel of the characters. It also seems like an odd branding choice as this series is long gone, but Teen Titans is ongoing (I think).

  16. jmstump jmstump says:

YAY! Something to fill the Justice League/Teen Titans void!

  17. Nate Nate says:

I’m pretty sure there is some rights issue with Wondergirl. I always think it’s weird that WB owns all that, but yet can’t use any character they want at any given time. It’s like the whole last season of JLU couldn’t used The Joker because of Dark Knight or something. Weird.

It would be awesome if we could finally get some trades out of this.

  18. Ilash Ilash says:

Um, yeah, isn’t this more Teen Titans than Young Justice? But if this means that we get some Young Justice trades then I couldn’t care less about what the cartoon is like.

  19. PraxJarvin PraxJarvin says:

Pretty cool. I’ll definitely check it out. Artemis is interesting given that there’s currently a teen Speedy. And for those wondering why this isn’t named Teen Titans, it’s pretty clear that they want to separate this from the TEEN TITANS cartoon. As well, it seems like their intention is "Young Justice League" seeing as how they’re each analogues to the Justice League.

  20. Art1318 Art1318 says:

Sweeeeet!!! I know i’m being a little picky here, but what really made young justice for me was Impulse. I know it makes more sense to have Kid Flash, but was freaking rad.

  21. truestranger truestranger says:

Yeah I was sad when impulse became kid flash. I understand why I just don’t like kid flash’s costume.

  22. LukeB LukeB says:

Kinda looks like they wanted to do a cartoon about the comic book ‘teen titans’, but they already had the american-anime version of the show, so instead of doing some kind of renaming like ‘The NEW Teen Titans’ or some such, which would confuse kids, they are just telling the TT stories they want to under the ‘Young Justice’ Imprint. Artemis looks/ sounds like an Amazon character, I’m sure that name was in the ‘Wonder Woman’ movie….. can’t remember, but if it is, maybe she’ll turn out to be Cassie in disguise? Although, she REALLY does look more like Arrowette, maybe Mia?

Really hope that’s the comic book version of Tim Drake and not the Batman TAS ver.

Could it be that they are starting the show a few months to a year after the formation of the team and we’ll be seeing flashback to their formation? nah, too complicated for kids…. it’s just new. Let hope for good.

  23. Conor Kilpatrick conor (@cskilpatrick) says:

@LukeB: Artemis is a long time character in the DCU, but yeah, it seems like they’ve merged her with Arrowette here.

  24. nilcam nilcam says:

I had this short-lived dream that I’d click on the link and see YJ in Todd Nauck’s style. Damn I miss 90s DC!

  25. edward edward says:

Superboy actually looks better with cargo pants and boots instead of Jersy Shore jeans and pointed leather boots.

  26. LukeB LukeB says:

@conor I thought so, I haven’t read much Wonder Woman, so wasn’t 100% Reading that Wiki entry, it’s going to be interesting to see how they make her a member of YOUNG Justice ;) and she’s Blonde not a fiery redhead, so I’m thinking it a new ‘cooler’ codename for Arrowette, but I guess we”l have to wait and see.

  27. LukeB LukeB says:

@conor Actually, after doing a quick look around the world wide room, I found some papers that say the voice actor Stephanie Lemelin was cast as Arrowette, with a picture of Artemis, guess the name was changed because….. as I said above, it sounds cooler? I find it interesting that they made her wear a green costume, similar to Green Arrow, I guess they’re trying to create a familiar feeling towards the characters, all they really need now is a Kid Lantern ;) Anyone seen Kyle?

  28. stuclach stuclach says:

I think my girls will like this.  They love Robin.

  29. AndyL says:

I’m excited about the series, but the pedigree isn’t great. Teen Titans and the Batman were very weak. Of course Brave and the Bold has been a pleasant surprise.

  30. Spoons Spoons says:

I know this would never happen, but wouldn’t it be hilarious if they had Damien as Robin?

  31. Matrix Matrix says:

@stuclach – I think my me will like this. I love superboy!

  32. tbondrage99 tbondrage99 says:

Looks fun, I’ll give it a shot.

  33. If Greg Weisman is involved, I’ll be watching for sure. Love Spectacular Spider-Man and Gargoyles! Can’t wait for this!

  34. wolf wolf says:

    NICE!!!

  35. SplifEOC SplifEOC says:

ehhh I don’t know anything about Young Justice and I can say I care.  This may come off weird but cartoons? I feel a little out of that faze.

  36. JesTr JesTr says:

Sweet a cartoon with Superboy and Robin!!!

  37. Artemis? thats kind of strange, why didnt they just go with Cassie, that would have made more sense right? Either way, I’ll probably watch this.

Now if only Johns can convince DCE to give us what Ive wanted for over a decade; Flash: The Animated Series.

  38. CaseyJustice CaseyJustice says:

AWESOME!! I love YJ more than Jesus, and a show with Bart, Conner and Tim is gonna be amazing!

  39. RaceMcCloud RaceMcCloud says:

Young Justice and Ultimate Spider-Man: my two favorite books of the past, like, twenty years.  (The first iteration of PAD’s X-Factor is a close third.)

Question, though: is that Bart Allen Kid Flash, and is that Tim Drake Robin?  They, along with Conner, were the heart of YJ… although let’s be honest, it’s not the roster that REALLY matters.  This one is pretty close (no way were they using Secret or Empress)… but if Peter David isn’t writing every episode, it’s not REALLY Young Justice.

Still, very cool.  Looking forward to it.

  40. RaceMcCloud RaceMcCloud says:

Also, I wager that Artemis is in place of Arrowette because "Artemis" is a better name, and in using her they can sort of roll Arrowette and Wonder Girl into one character (Amazonian Wonder Woman connection, teenage archer) without having two cute little blonde girls, one of whom has a similar power set to Superboy (who in this iteration will likely just have Superman Jr. powers, don’t you think?  "Tactile Telekinesis" is probably not something they want to bother explaining on a 30 minutes show).  It lets them bring in two more characters who are sort of "Justice League Jr." characters (Miss Martian and Aqualad) and not worry about dealing with Arrowette and Secret’s backgrounds, one of which was sort of awkwardly connected to Green Arrow, and the other who was created to drive the overriding arc of the entire series, frankly.  Aqualad and Miss Martian insert right into the Jr. Justice League motif better than Arrowette, Secret, Empress, The Ray, etc., etc.  And personality-wise, Miss Martian fills the "chipper outsider with the mysterious past" role that Secret played in the YJ book.

Or maybe I’m just overthinking it.

  41. Matrix Matrix says:

@RaceMcCloud – I think you might be right about superboy’s powers and I wonder whether they’ll have him be a clone of superman at all, or at least simplify the reasons why he was created. I’m cool with that. I’m most puzzled by aqualad since I don’t really know anything about him (i get an arsenal vibe off that image more than anything!), but it should be cool getting to know him.

  42. Ryan Haupt Haupt (@haupt) says:

Is the ‘dude’ in front supposed to be Aqualad? Not sure how I feel about that character design. Really thought it might be Thunder or some other obscure Teen Titan/Outsider. And I know my obscure characters reasonably well.

  43. Conor Kilpatrick conor (@cskilpatrick) says:

@Haupt: Yep, that’s Aqualad. They needed to diversify the cast a bit.

  44. LukeB LukeB says:

I’m now wondering if Aqualad will play the mentor role, like Red Tornado did in YJ and Cyborg did in the TT reboot

  45. BornIn1142 BornIn1142 says:

Well, fine. If Marvel doesn’t want to make use of Greg Weisman to continue the best cartoon they’ve ever had, then to hell with them. Let DC benefit from their idiocy.

I seriously doubt this will have much more to do with Young Justice than the name, but I expect it to be good on its own merits.

  46. stuclach stuclach says:

    @Matrix – Me, too.

  47. Matrix Matrix says:

@LukeB. That would be cool! It’d make sense if the titans existed in this world as well and he could bring up the next-gen.

I realllllllly hope it’s bart, connor and tim!!

  48. JesTr JesTr says:

@Haupt & @conor: Aqualad looks like Spyke from X-Men: Evolution.

  49. kentish kentish says:

This seems like a new version of Teen Titans.  iI there a reason they can’t use that name now?  Looks cool, either way.

  50. Dedwyre Dedwyre says:

DC has yet to let me down with any of their animated series since Batman: The Animated Series.  I even like Batman: The Brave and the Bold when there are characters that interest me.  I’m excited for this, and I’m not even that big of a fan of what little Young Justice I’ve read.  (Mostly early stuff.  I didn’t really like the art or the comedy.  I don’t know how the series may have changed later, but judging by the Young Justice/Outsiders crossover, it got a bit more serious.)

  51. Mangaman Mangaman says:

…. O=! Great now I’m going to have to watch Cartoon Network for the first time in 5 years.

  52. kaydawg25 kaydawg25 says:

i only have 2 promblem with this show…ok three …1 why do robin always look like a little kid…2 if thats Artemis why she look like arrowette..3 why aqualad look black and look like spike from x-men …not a racial question cause i’m black..

  53. Dan Dan says:

Kid Flash? A Flash regularly on TV? Yeah, I’ll check it out.

  54. muddi900 says:

    @kaydawg

    *throws fuel*

Because the PC culture in America requires ‘diverse’ cast with always a white lead. Thats the only way the people who run things will greenlight projects

  55. This makes me wish Peter David’s Young Justice series

  56. CaseyJustice CaseyJustice says:

Sorry to resurrect this long dormant thread, but anybody think we’ll get some YJ collections out of this if the show hits big?

  57. iemcwriss iemcwriss says:

ok first teen titans is not an on going series for you who thought it was but i get your point. I cant wait till it comes out in the serise! ok so yes i am a girl but i like comics and stuff i am a tomboy by choice. but i think it will be awesome to see what kind of stuggles the characters have in this serise i know that in the jlu shira had one with carter and that superman had one with supergirl leaving to go to the future so it will be very intersting to see where they go this time. And it might be true that wondergirl will make an apperance in the season somewhere.

  58. iemcwriss iemcwriss says:

@LukeB  it does look that way, he seems more of a parental figure doesn’t he, from just like an hour into to the show no one can tell for sure o we will have to wait and find out wont we.

  59. iemcwriss iemcwriss says:

i just thouht of something. ok in teen titans there were no gaurdians living with the teens, in this one there is. and i dont ever remember seeing red tornadoe and black canary in the teen titans serise.
