Who or What Are “The First X-Men”?

Find out on Monday!

Comments

  1. This is actually a mini about The X-Clan

    VANGLORIOUS!

  2. Sometimes it seems like marketing must be a super easy job: “Hey guys, how should we promote our upcoming series, The First X-Men?” “How about we put the words ‘The First X-Men’ on a page, list the month it’s coming out, and then write it again with a hash-tag in front of it?” “Great, let’s all go home.”

  3. Is this a Trick Question?

    And by the way…
    This is Protected…
    By the Red…
    The Black..
    and The Green…
    With a Key.

    Sisssssys.

  4. I don’t read X-Men. Can anyone tell me what is going on with Xavier?

    • Not much, it seems. Just been bumming around ever since giving his blessing to Wolvie’s school.

Probably got a place in the Village, couple roommates. Who knows?

    • He’s pretty much off the board at the moment. I think there was an oblique reference to him in this week’s Wolverine and The X-Men. He’s been kind of aimless and absent since House of M.

    • He’s gone from Most Important Mutant in the World to “everybody’s weird uncle.” It’s the one thing that X-Men East and X-Men West can agree on: when Uncle Charlie rings the doorbell, everybody gets really quiet, hides behind some furniture and pretends to be out saving the world.

@CaseyJustice: I can see that sitcom, now: the wacky non-adventures of Xavier, Dakken and Hercules. It would be a cross between Seinfeld and Two and a Half Men, because nothing would ever happen except Hercules being a PG-13 Bad Boy as he and socially conscious Xavier tried to raise the socially awkward Dakken.

  5. Just what we need, another x book.

  6. I thought this would have been Bendis’ new book, but that ain’t for a few more months

  7. Been out of the X-loop for a while, but maybe it’s a new team consisting of the first team. Namely Cyclops, Beast, Angel, and Iceman. Who knows? Maybe Hope replaces Jean’s spot or Jean comes back to life. I mean, yes, Angel doesn’t know who he is right now (I think) and Beast and Iceman are in camp Wolverine, but that’s my guess. A bad one, but it’s mine.

Or maybe it’s another team that Xavier had that mysteriously disappeared and was never spoken again like Vulcan’s.

    • X-Factor #1 (back in 1986) featured the return of Jean Grey and the formation of a new team consisting of the original team….

Given that this comes out in August (and not after AVX), I’m thinking we’re in for some kind of swerve on the expectations of the title, like the new X-Treme X-Men having nothing to do with the original X-Treme X-Men.

  8. I think this will be Brian Michael Bendis new book and will feature the original X-Men

  9. After AvX, the fist class will reunite. I bet u that at some point in AvX, Jean will return and we are gonna have a splash page with the original 5 together. Kinda like the moment in The Avengers film where we see them together in the third act. That kinda epic.

  10. Perhaps it pre-dates the original team…kinda like when Pete Best played the drums before Ringo joined the Beatles.

  11. Smells like Jonathan Hickman to me. Something like his SHIELD book.

  12. Bendis’s book will be a combination of X-Men and Avengers.

  13. maybe this will be about a bunch of crime-fighting 2-celled organisms (who mutated from single-celled organisms).

  14. just getting the band back together

  15. This is all part of the company wide reboot.

  16. Avatar photo filippod (@filippodee) says:

The thing with these Marvel teasers is that they when the actual book comes out I’ve already stopped caring for weeks.

  17. So much hate for the X-Men. Always been a huge fan of the X-Men, however I do agree there is and has been way to much glut of X books/tittles, etc.

  18. I know that “too many X-books” is a common complaint, but I don’t believe these books are hurting anyone.

I know there’s a feeling that the extraneous (I’m not gonna do it, haha) X-books are using up resources that could be devoted to other properties, but I think Marvel is pretty good about watching their sales — if the overhead is the same and they thought Darkhawk (for example) would sell better than New Mutants, I’m pretty sure they’d end New Mutants for Darkhawk.

To those who say “too many X-books”, what would be an acceptable number? Why that number? How many X-books do you read now?

The fact that they’ve had multiple X-titles running consistently since the 1980s tells me that they fill a profitable niche. Current line-wide events aside, there have even been times when the X-Men were so separate from the Marvel universe, you could see the X-books as their own Marvel imprint. Given that, it makes sense to offer a variety of books that play in what is effectively a sub-continuity.

And it’s not like X-books get privileged when they’re unprofitable — in this year alone Generation Hope, X-23 and Daken: Dark Wolverine all got the axe (it took so much not to type “X-ed out”, but I guess I just did anyway).

Beyond business considerations, I think the X-office has done a great job giving each book it’s own direction and feel (at least among the ones I read).

    • Wow well said!

    • i agree with you ken, but the only caveat i’d give is there are too many continuity heavy, new reader unfriendly inaccessible X-books. I love the X-men in theory but have a very difficult time getting into any of the ongoings. Too much homework and intensity required.

    • If a book doesn’t have a capital A or X in the title it gets shitcanned. At this point I doubt if they would even think about launching a Darkhawk book.

  19. I’d actually like it to be a pre-quel series about Xavier and Magneto and their early days as friends, when the world didn’t know what mutants were. I always liked the history between those two, how they started as allies and their rift came over philosophical differences, not necessarily “good vs evil” as is usually the case.

  20. I reckon it’ll be somebody old school like Claremont writing a team that consists of some or all of the originals: Xavier, Cyclops, Angel, Ice-Man, Beast, Jean. Potentially set in the past, of course, at least partially.
