When BRIGHTEST DAY Ends … BRIGHTEST DAY AFTERMATH: THE SEARCH Begins

Brightest Day has been a commercial and a critical success for DC Comics, and so it's only natural that they'd want to keep that good feeling going. It worked for 52, right? Right?

Over on the DC Blog they've released the partially obscured cover to Brightest Day Aftermath: The Search #1.

This three issue miniseries is written by Jonathan Vankin and drawn by Marco Castiello and DC isn't sayiing anything other than it chronicles the fallout from Brightest Da and that "the new protector of Earth has been chosen – but one reluctant hero makes a return to try and convince Batman, Superman and the rest of the DC Universe’s heroes that this may not be a good thing at all."

So. Two questions.

One, who is Jonathan Vankin? He's a writer and former senior Vertigo editor.

Two, who are those obscured figures on the cover? No idea.

  1. WheelHands WheelHands says:

Those two figures could not be any more vague. So let’s start listing bald, unitard costumed characters.

Deadman? Kinda obvious but I thought I’d get it out of the way.

Let’s hope this doesn’t have a Countdown odor to it.

  2. DId Superman get his shadow stolen?

  3. Ali Colluccio WonderAli (@WonderAli) says:

call me crazy, but I really think that’s Lex Luthor up front.

  4. ericmci ericmci says:

What is the reason for that piping on Batman’s costume.

I know it’s for the reader to distinguish between bruce and dick

But is there any functional difference in the comic?

  5. pyynk pyynk says:

@Jashcraft Nah, Bats just brought his own floodlight. Those cool silhouettes aren’t just the luck of the draw.

  6. JesTr JesTr says:

@WonderAli  Me too, the collar is what gave it away for me.

  7. Xeno Xeno says:

Damn it, I hate when they do that..they’re going to let me shelf out more money just so I can finish the story! Damn OC tendency!

@WonderAli That would make sense! He’s been searching for a power ring, what if it turns out the white ring is searching for him. The bearer doesn’t necessarily have to be a hero, just someone who loves life.

  8. matthaber matthaber says:

    My guesses:

Person on the right is aquaman

And the person in the middle is Martian manhunter. After what happened in the last issue of brighter day it seems like the logical choice.

  9. An unheard of creative team spinning out the aftermath of an event? How well did that work for DC after all their other events? The only one that was even partially okay was Final Crisis Dance. It’s stuff like this that puts me off events.

  10. WeaklyRoll WeaklyRoll says:

Person on right will probably have to take the place of Wonder Woman as she is out of the office, and if Hal is busy with his Green Lantern war and probably doesn’t have the favour of the league after turning his back to them, then it could probably be Aquaman like @matthaber suggested (whioch would rock) or it could be Barry given that Flashpoint is coming up and he’s on of the remaining big guns.

I don’t see The person out front being Lex, but could see it being J’onn.

  11. i’m getting ready for Brightest Day to be over…i’m sure i’ll forget to pick up this series.

  12. ctrosejr ctrosejr says:

Less concerned about what DC does out of Brightest Day.  I want to know what will be spinning out of Generation Lost.  Please be an ongoing JLI title with Winick at the helm.

  13. PozrDu PozrDu says:

Supes is back in Action (so to speak) in #900.  Considering Luthor has been chasing around Black Lantern power bubbles & turning them white,  it seems plausible that it might involve him.

  14. WheelHands WheelHands says:

Front and center could be Lex. Especially when you consider the look on Superman’s face. Might make for an interesting twist.

The real question would be which one is the “chosen hero” and which is the “reluctant hero”? If Lex is front and center, that would make him the reluctant one coming to warn them, according to the description.

  15. @ctrosejr  They could combine JLI and Power Girl I guess into one Double-Sized Winnickapalooza.

  16. Askanison Askanison says:

All I know is that Aquaman better get his own book when this is all over.  The other 4 Aquaman fans in the world and I demand it.

  17. PozrDu PozrDu says:

@Askanison:  So they can ride the Katers-momentum like they did w/ the Flash?  ;)

  18. I love this because people have been clamoring for more Generation Lost stuff and instead of giving the fans that…..DC is giving us a yawner of a premise for an ‘epliogue’ of sorts for Brightest Day.

  19. FoeApple FoeApple says:

    I’m pulling it.

  20. peterporker peterporker says:

    maxwell lord?

  21. Neb Neb says:

My two cents: person on the right is Cyborg (he seems to be gaining momentum, strangely with Flashpoint stuff) and person in the foreground is Lex.

  22. powerdad powerdad says:

The name is cracking me up a little. “Brightest Day” is so happy sounding to me, and “Aftermath” has such a negative overtone; so all three words together sound like a bad parody. Kind of like “Puppies and Rainbows REVENGE: The Plan!”

(I will fully admit I’ve only read a few of the Brightest Day comics, so I know the title “Brightest Day Aftermath” make sense to those who are reading it.  But I suspect it must sound comical to others.)

  23. powerdad powerdad says:

Okay, I can see Lex and I can see Cyborg.  I did see Maxwell Lord at first, but on second take I can’t help but see Cyborg.  (Of course knowing my luck it’s probably Johnny Storm.)

  24. xiseerht says:

So we go from the Blackest Night , to the Brightest Day . Why not call it the Sunny Afternoon ?

  25. @xiseerht  — haha Foggy Evening. (this joke isn’t getting old for me, even though it should be)

  26. Hate to say it, figure in front reminds me of Jason Todd. He has been dead before and the “reluctant hero” bill fits. My guess
    is Aquaman is the other.

  27. JesTr JesTr says:

What if it’s Abin Sur come back to life?

  28. ctrosejr ctrosejr says:

@ResurrectionFlan  I would definitely be on board for that!

  29. WeaklyRoll WeaklyRoll says:

@JesTr i think you just blew my mind.

  30. RoiVampire RoiVampire says:

@MikefromGotham  dude you might be right, jason is wearing a cape now as the red hood and that figure looks like it’s wearing a cape, notice how vertical the lines going down the side of the figure are

  31. Flash923 Flash923 says:

Well I guess i will take a shot at it:
In front: either Deadman or Martian Manhunter
In back: either The Flash or Aquaman maybe Booster Gold

    Does Superman have crossed eyes?

  32. Skyfire124 Skyfire124 says:

I’m probably nitpicking here but I thought that Brightest Day was suppposed to go for a full year/bi-weekly.  Did they shorten it later to 24 issues instead of what would have been 26?  Shortened because of Flashpoint?  If they did, then I can perhaps see why they might have chosen to do a Brightest Day Aftermath.

  33. ctrosejr ctrosejr says:

@Skyfire124: You are not wrong.  They did shorten it to 24 issues.

  34. ed209AF ed209AF says:

    dont forget issue 0

  35. UkeRupp says:

Now that we’ve read BD #23, could this new “savior” be A.H. ?
    Any ideas?

  36. ed209AF ed209AF says:

@UkeRupp  Just came back myself to check the image. Doubt its A.H.

  37. jakamchelse says:

IF the savior is A.H., deosn’t that make the “reluctant hero” J.C. ? ( and no I don’t mean Jesus, but along the right line)

  38. Checkmate Checkmate says:

isnt the ‘white lantern’ dude the human side of the swamp thing?

my guess is the guy in the front is white lantern swamp thing and the guy behind supes is deadman
