Thieves to Steal Nicolas Cage’s Prized Possession in New Lionsgate Film ‘Action No. 1’

Caged heat.

If you’re wondering, these are the kind of news items that make me get up in the morning.

Twelve years ago, Nic Cage lost his treasured copy of 1938’s Action Comics #1 to some very ambitious thieves. Time passed. The film Bangkok Dangerous was produced. Then, somewhere, a shard of Krypton revolved in deepest space. Cage’s book resurfaced in 2011 along with other possessions in a forgotten storage locker. It went on the auction block and sold for, well, more money than you want to think about. It’s a cool anecdote with a treasure far more interesting than the typical McGuffin. That didn’t go unnoticed by the creators of Comedy Central’s Reno 911. No it did not.

The Hollywood Reporterreports…that Lionsgate has picked up Action No. 1. Not the book. The movie. Not a Superman movie. A movie about people who love Superman and covet his first appearance. Including Nic Cage and some very ambitious thieves.

Writers Robert Ben Garant and Thomas Lennon want to tell the story of the “group of nerds” who conspire to steal the comic. The screenplay was written with Nicolas Cage in mind for the role of Nicolas Cage. Jason Statham was also rumored to have involvement at one point. Unfortunately, THR claims that neither Cage or Statham are likely to appear in the film.

So, you know, deal with that revelation.

Comments

  1. I’m actually shocked Nic Cage wouldn’t do this. The guy is such a comic nerd, he said yes to Ghost Rider………..twice.

  2. Now this is a comic book movie I can buy into. What a clever concept!

  3. This could make for a fun heist flick. It would be even better if Nic Cage starred in it. I’m sure he could use the money.

  4. Thomas Lennon! I’m in if it’s that Thomas Lennon.

  5. I honestly can’t think of anyone except Nicolas Cage who could play Nicolas Cage. Maybe Ken Marino. Now I’m trying to guess which members of The State will make guest appearances…

  6. Who knows why, there are a lot of reasons they may have declined; contract negotiations, legal, $$, script is not that good, or maybe Cage does not want to make a characture of his career. I’m pretty sure his last name is taken from comics too.

  7. Andy Sandburg as Nic Cage.

  8. “Group of nerds” doesn’t exactly fill me with anticipation. Laughing-with-us Spaced nerds, or laughing-at-us Big Bang Theory nerds?

  9. Wow. Weird way to get an idea of a movie but I’m down for this.

The comic in question was sold for 2.1 million dollars by the way. So remember if any of your parents took away your copy when you were a kid….You are allowed to kill them.

  10. So what you’re telling me is that they figured out how to make a bad Nicholas Cage or Jason Statham movie WITHOUT Nicholas Cage or Jason Statham? That’s diabolical.

  11. well i’ll be interested to see how they build this out into a movie. A bunch of dudes breaking into a house to steal a *something* isn’t exactly the most dramatic thing….unless they are doing it Oceans 11 style with crazy heist stuff….hmm

  12. ARGH! Cage HAS to be in it! It would be too perfect!

  13. Synopsis:

Jim Parsons & Joseph-Gordon Levitt are two thieves who steal the book from Cage’s home in LA while he is away shooting a film.

Jason Statham is the detective hired to find them, nearly catching them in Las Vegas and Chicago, kicking ass along the way.

Jason Mewes, the thieves’ room mate, finds the book on the coffee table, retreats to the privacy of his storage locker to read it, doesn’t get it, and forgets it there as he awaits the release of issue two.

  14. They already made this movie, it was called Fanboy.

  15. Nicolas Cage is the king.
