‘The Walking Dead’ – S03E03 – “Walk With Me”

NOTE: Letโ€™s be mindful of all the new viewers participating in this conversation and try not to spoil plot points taking place deep into the run of the comic series. Mild speculation is fine and encouraged, as well as talking about things that have happened in the comic up until the point they are at in the show, but donโ€™t get too explicit with regard to future surprises. They will be deleted. Thanks!

For those of you coming here expecting to read my recap of the latest episode, I’ve got bad news. Due to an unusual DVR error that I’ve never seen before, the episode did not record. And because it takes a good amount of time to write these recaps–and my window to write them on Sunday night is small–I wasn’t able to write it up this week. No one is more bummed about missing writing up the first appearance of The Governor than I am…

Here’s how “Walk With Me” is described:

Andrea and Michonne meet a new band of survivors, but conflicts arise.

I look forward to your thoughts, opinions, gripes, live-blogging, etc.

  1. Pretty fucking sweet

  2. I didn’t love this episode. The Governor isn’t as sadistic as I felt he should have been. I guess the “aquarium” scene was a little crazy but his debut in the book was much more exciting. I also don’t like how they are making Michonne out to be this introverted/demanding character. She is very likable in the book but I don’t like her at all so far. Maybe I shouldn’t compare the show to the book but the book is just so damn good! I know it’s early in the season but I thought this was the weakest episode so far.

    • I didn’t mind Michonne being introverted considering where she is and how much she hates the place.

    • I agree with Rio.
Plus, this episode had to build up Michonne’s character and I think it works perfect for the show.
I’m pretty sure if you stay with the show, you are going to like Michonne more and more.

Unless of course she gets killed – which COULD happen on this show.
That is why I’m so happy the show ISN’T the exact book.

    • I think the TV show is letting the viewers off pretty easy with the intro of the Governor and his town. I have a feeling they’re going to back off a lot of the psycho sadistic stuff that he does and that happens in this part of the comics. They’ve already introduced him as reasonable on the surface which is not at all how he is in the comic. I wonder if AMC has the balls to really show the level of horror that Kirkman imagined. My bet is they don’t.

    • Its only the third episode of a now 16 episode season. Theres lots of time to see the Governor’s more sadistic side. I liked the way he was introduced on the show, it got you thinking “ohh he seems like he could be a nice guy, doing what needs to be done to protect his community (much like Rick)” then you get the Aquarium reveal, and you think “this mother f#$kers crazy as sh!t” and you can’t wait to see just “how” crazy he really is. I would have been more disappointed if he immediately came on the show and started cutting off appendages, and committing sexual assault. Give it at least 3 more episodes and you’ll get the Governor your looking for, until then enjoy watching him evolve into the sadistic Governor we know and love from the comics.

      *POTENTIAL SPOILER PREDICTION*

I have this sneaking suspicion that we are going to see Merl returning the favour on Rick, if you catch my drift ๐Ÿ˜‰ ๐Ÿ˜‰ chop chop.

    • @Gritty The only argument I would have against that is, Kirkman has since stated that he regretted doing that to Rick’s character.

    • I don’t think they are going to do *THAT* to Rick in the TV show either. Maybe another kind of punishment will be substituted.

And I still don’t think TV viewers are ready for the psychological horror dished out in this section of the comics and the show will use gore as a substitute for some of the intensely insane acts perpetrated in the comic.

Already the heads in the aquarium weren’t as f*cked up to me. In the comic, it was like he had a bank of TVs on his wall, white house style, and the heads were more active and making sounds. In the TV show, they just looked like trophies from hunting.

    • I haven’t been liking Michonne’s character in the show so far. She’s too important to be that quiet, and to not have a bigger entrance than she has. I just don’t think they’re doing her justice. The aquarium scene was a big plus in an otherwise unimpressive entrance by the governer.

    • On of my friends that I watch the show with has never read the books, but he stinkin loves Michonne, and I think shes pretty fantastic too.

  3. Decent episode. So far, I’ve enjoyed this season more than the previous two combined.

This is certainly a different take on The Governor, but one that could potentially prove more interesting than his fairly two dimensional (yet still deliciously evil) comic book ancestor. The original Governor certainly wasn’t serving anyone tea and eggs. On the surface, this guy seems completely genuine, with a barely noticeable sick rage boiling underneath. So far, I’m loving Morrissey’s performance.

    SPOILER ALERT
I do wish they had ended the episode with his daughter instead of just the fish tank heads. I got really excited when he unlocked that door, and it was a bit of a letdown for me when he just admired his floating heads. I think it would’ve been much more shocking and effective if they had gone with the daughter, but hopefully that’s coming. Along with the zombie gladiator games. I really wanna see that on screen.

The choice to have Andrea be separated from the group for so long and fall under The Governor’s spell so quickly strikes me as an odd one. I would’ve preferred it if they had chosen Carol or maybe Hershel’s younger daughter as the person at Michonne’s side. Everything so far has only weakened Andrea’s character, and done more to separate her from her comic counterpart than anything else. I have a 100+ issue long fondness for Andrea, and so far this doesn’t jive with me. But that really just has more to do with my inability to separate the show from the book.

On the plus side, Michonne is fucking spectacular! She’s the only one who jumps right off the page onto the screen, and even though she hasn’t had a whole lot to do, Gurira is killing it so far. Good stuff.

Good episode. Really interested to see how they peel away The Gov’s niceties and reveal all his wicked glory. Also looking forward to getting back to the group next week.

    • yeah i agree, i was totally expecting that as well when he unlocked the door

    • I agree 100%. I expected the daughter and was disappointed it was just the heads in fish tanks. That’s creepy, but the daughter is worse. Maybe they are doing it a little at a time. Maybe Andrea will come to trust him, and him her, and he’ll take her to “meet” his daughter. I think there’s an attraction there.

So in the book did they ever tell whose heads were in the tanks? And weren’t they reanimated and moving? Man, that room must stink!

    • ***potential spoiler***

I’m thinking next episode he does something that makes the audience think, “Hey, even though he’s a cold blooded killer at least he has his head on straight.” and then at the end of the episode he’ll go in to feed her and everyone who doesn’t read the book will be like “Whoa!!!! And I thought the fish tanks were fucked up, way to go guys.”

I want the audience to see her before another character does. I want that episode where we know what he has in the closet but nobody else does.

plus, the fish tank scene was goddamn right out of the book and holy crap that was great

  4. Very strong “set up” episode. They had me thinking “we’ll this guy seems alright” but we knew it wasn’t. I still pinch myself that we are watching The Walking Dead on television and its been done really well. Next week things can go back to uglier.

  5. Michonne was a little too squinty, in my opinion. A bit of over-acting on her part. Other than that, the ep was badass.

    • I agree, I don’t think Michonne is supposed to have a permanent grimace on her face. The actor seemed to be over-acting and scowling at everything and everyone. Oh well, I guess that what untreated mental illness can do. Michonne needs to pair up with a therapist/psychologist to work through her personality disorder. ๐Ÿ˜‰

  6. Weird, same thing happened here – first two episodes recorded fine, and this one didn’t. Someone get Kirkman on the line to explain!

  7. I thought it was an interesting debut for the governor. Definitely different from the comics. A few thoughts:

    1. I like how the doctor with glasses guy is THE ONLY man in the zombie apocalypse that remembers how to make tea.

    2. I didn’t totally buy the Ambush at the end. Seemed waaaay to easy to snipe down National Guardsman (i’m assuming from the comics) from so far away. It was kind of a ho hum scene, but set up the governor as a brutal liar so i kinda liked that i guess.

    • I agree and disagree with what you’re saying. It doesnt make alot of sense, but then again alot of the guys with the Gov. are vets… so it WAS mostly Vets against National Guard (no disrespect to National Guard.. I’m just pretty sure vets win in skill in most areas). A little unrealistic HOW it happened maybe.. but it would have probley happened anyway.

    • yeah i dunno you’re prob right…like i said, something about that scene just seemed to easy. I dunno….i’m nit picking. It was one of those “oh, that’s all their gonna do?” kinda thing. kinda underwhelmed by a big action scene is all.

    • Just a quick point, that part with the national guard being taken out wasn’t in the comics that i can remember.

    • yeah but they talked about the nearby National Guard base where they got all the gear from…that’s what i mean by that.

  8. I liked the episode quite a bit, I can live with the differences from the comic myself.. otherwise I’d know what happens EVERYTIME! (There should be alot more survivors at this point for example in Rick’s group… guess they wan’t to keep the group small.)

  9. Loved last night’s episode!!! It was very well-written, it introduced some wonderful new actors – chief among them being the awesome guy playing The Governor. And even though Hershel is still my favorite character of the series, I was getting tired of the rest of the cast, so ditching them in favor of all new peeps was vastly refreshing. Milton reminds me of Gale from “Breaking Bad,” yay!

  10. The Governor stole the show in my opinion.

  11. Its still watered down compared to the books, but that not surprising at this point. It is what it is. I feel like the heads in tanks was more of a concession at that point… ‘look how weak we watered down the story… so here, chew on this to appease you comic nerds’. Alright.

I wish I had never read and re-read the books. Its ruining this show for me. Don’t get me wrong, I’m not mad about change, I welcome it… I don’t mind that Dale and Sophia and a slew of others are dead already or never existed on the show, but the devil’s in the details.
For example, killing soldiers to gain additional supplies is ruthless evil, but not psychotic evil. Compare that to, in the books, the crashed copter was a news copter with civilians who the Governor outright fed to his pet zombies… and had NOTHING to gain from it. Big difference in character.

Still a good show, don’t mean to be negative about it… like it for the most part except one or two details. As I argue with my friends: Its the soap-opera version of the Walking Dead. I am curious as to how they are going to connect the Prison to Woodbury at this point… from the looks of it, seems like Woodbury is going to find the Prison rather than vice versa.
