The Best of the Week in Panels – 11.09.2011

Saturday night was for wives, but Friday night at the Copa was always for the panels.

The All-New Batman: The Brave and The Bold #13

By Sholly Fisch, Rick Burchett, Dan Davis, Guy Major, & Carlos M. Mangual

This panel was as close to Robin fan nirvana as it gets…

The All-New Batman: The Brave and The Bold #13

By Sholly Fisch, Rick Burchett, Dan Davis, Guy Major, & Carlos M. Mangual

… but these two were closer.

Ultimate Comics Spider-Man #4

By Brian Michael Bendis, Sara Pichelli, Justin Ponsor, & Cory Petit

Live it up, Miles! It’s all downhill from there. (Also, get a tailor.)

Batwoman #3

By J.H. Williams III, W. Haden Blackman, Dave Stewart, & Todd Klein

There were any stunning double page spreads in this issue but this was my favorite. There is so much exciting kinetic energy in the top half of the page. Plus, I have always been a sucker for those action shots in comics that show a character moving via multiple shots of the character.

Wolverine #18

By Jason Aaron, Ron Garney, Jason Keith, & Cory Petit

I, uh… I’m having a salad for dinner tonight.

Demon Knights #3

By Paul Cornell, Diogenes Neves, Oclair Albert, Marcelo Maiolo, & Jared K. Fletcher

This was the one moment in comics this week elicited a verbal exclamation from me. Fucked up, Etrigan. Fucked up.

Batman and Robin #3

By Peter J. Tomasi, Patrick Gleason, Mick Gray, John Kalisz, & Patrick Brosseau

This was a very visceral panel. You can almost see the movement and feel the impact.

Avenging Spider-Man #1

By Zeb Wells, Joe Madureira, Ferran Daniel, & Joe Caramagna

I don’t have a ton of experience with Joe Mad but this issue made me a believer and this panel cinched it.

Comments

  1. I refuse to eat anything unless it has been sautéed in the tears of my enemies. Well, except perogis.

    • you’re in luck! they’re generally made that way ahead of time these days. we’re busy people, man, we can’t take the time to sit down and do all that ourselves.

  2. The panel in Demon Knights made me gasp. A lot of stuff with Etrigan in this issue was pretty dark (no pun :P)…in a good way.

  3. If you haven’t read the issue rest assured that was not the most shocking panel from Demon Knights.

  4. jason aaron is a strange man

    • I got him to sign my Joker’s Asylum: Penguin issue at NYCC. His beard frightened me.

    • i’ve been working on an SAT-like analogy involving connor and jason aaron for a week or two now. thus far, it’s

the hulk : the maestro :: connor kilpatrick : jason aaron

eh? eh??? give it a while. i’ll get there eventually.

  5. Batwoman is a visual feast. It pretty much is guaranteed to have a minimum of one page in Panels of the Week every time it comes out.

  6. Connor’s in “construction.”

  7. I wanna read Batwoman so bad. I hope i get my whateverprinting next week so i can read all 3 issues in one session.

  8. I had Jason Aaron sign my Joker’s Asylum issue as well. When he was at the Marvel booth, I slid it to him and he smirked and said “I won’t tell if you don’t” . Signed my buddy’s Scalped vol. 1 trade with a “Welcome to the Rez” inscription which I was pretty jealous of.

  9. Oh god, I’ve never read All-New Batman: The Brave and The Bold, but I am going out to get that RIGHT NOW.

  10. Wolverine had a butt ton of great panels this issue. My favorite moment (though, admittedly it wouldn’t have fit in BOTWIP) was “You never drank me under the table. He never drank me under the table.” I laughed out loud.

Good picks all, as usual Conor.

  11. Favorite panel, hands down, was Patrick Gleason doing an homage to Kelley Jones on the third page of Batman and Robin #3. That made me so happy.

  12. how i wish joe mad was on ASM, proper.

  13. Mad props to the Colorist on Batwoman. JH williams III’s layouts and art just jump off the page with the great job done by Dave Stewart!! That cape is just alive in the darkness of the night sky.

  14. I quite like Damian’s determined frown there.

  15. REALLY like that batman & Robin panel. You can almost feel the impact!

  16. If you guys like J.H. Williams check out Promethea (if you haven’t already). Alan Moore gave him some crazy sh*t to draw – especially toward the end and he kills it.

  17. The fact that I’m subscribed to three of these books, and I haven’t bought them yet, makes me excited to see some great artwork. Hopefully in the distant future one of my works will be on this list.

  18. Batwoman and Demon Knights are at the top of my shortening pull right now, loved Elegy and was looking forward to her series before the new52 and glad they waited, Animal Man, Stormwatch, Swamp Thing and Batman are hanging in there strong too from DC. Love Uncanny X-Force from 1st to currrent and the run before that, as it and Cables run gave way to this one in accompanying the Messiah trilogy, Messiah Complex, Messiah War and Second Coming. As for Joe Mad, I wanna check this out just for his art and love his angles on Spidey, Joe is a 90’s bloomer if I remember correctly and recall him being good but that panel looks great. I’ve had my share of Avengers and Spidey over the years and am waiting for Remender on Secret Avengers to come back to that book w Cap Britain,GiantMan/Antman/Goliath(just love that they portrayed him in that look) and w Hawkeye too, alongside Black Widow who fit that team perfectly, they could do w/out Valkyrie, she doesn’t say black ops team at all to me, drop her and bring in Wildcat or Black Panther( I know, a lot of ppl like his current run, Wolverine and Spidey are in every damn book, he can swing two.

  19. Btw, Marvel if you read this, Enough Wolverine everywhere!!!!! Leave him in Uncanny X-Force, Wolverine and the X-Men and his self titled series and pop up in other X books and Marvel titles here and there, everywhere all at once blows and I know I’m one of many fans w that opinion. Love your work, thanx!
