The Best of the Week in Panels – 10.05.2011

The secret of panels is honesty and fair dealing. If you can fake that, you’ve got it made.

Stormwatch #2

By Paul Cornell, Miguel Sepulveda, Al Barrionuevo, Alex Sinclair, & Rob Leigh

If you know the context, this is a very funny throwaway joke.

— Conor Kilpatrick

Thunderbolts #164

By Jeff Parker, Kev Walker, Terry Pallot, & Frank Martin

If I’m Starfire, I’m screaming about a double standard right now. Namor gets to slut it up all over Europe. Daughter of Satan? She gets a free pass. What gives?

— Josh Flanagan

O.M.A.C. #2

By Keith GIffen, Dan Didio, Scott Koblish, Hi-Fi, & Travis Lanham

There’s so much to love about this panel. The bitchin’ mohawk. The detail work. But my favorite thing is the hand coming right at us which is quintessential Jack Kirby.

— Conor Kilpatrick

Action Comics #2

By Grant Morrison, Rags Morales, Brent Anderson, Rick Bryant, & Patrick Brousseau

A lot of people are making a big deal of Monica Lewinsky’s surprise appearance in this panel, but that’s missing the point that it had the single worst pickup line in the history of pickup lines, excepting some of the 70s and early 80s.

— Josh Flanagan

Moon Knight #6

By Brian Michael Bendis, Alex Maleev, Matt Wilson, & Cory Petit

This made me laugh out loud in a public place.

— Conor Kilpatrick

Animal Man #2

By Jeff Lemire, Travel Foreman, Lovern Kindzierski, & Jared K. Fletcher

That outfit doesn’t seem like the right direction for the trip they’re taking.

— Josh Flanagan

Animal Man #2

By Jeff Lemire, Travel Foreman, Lovern Kindzierski, & Jared K. Fletcher

The “Back in a minute!” comedy beat happening in the background was my favorite thing from comics this week.

— Conor Kilpatrick

The Walking Dead #89

By Robert Kirkman, Charlie Adlard, & Cliff Rathburn

This is the oh-my-these-are-some-tough-mf’ers-and-we’ve-underestimated-them shot from a great moment in the issue.

— Josh Flanagan

Swamp Thing #2

By Scott Snyder, Yanick Paquette, Nathan Fairbairn, & John J. Hill

A twisty headed woman coming at you with an axe ranks up there on the Bad Day Scale.

— Conor Kilpatrick

Avengers: 1959 #1

By Howard Chaykin & Jared K. Fletcher

This is old school funny.

— Conor Kilpatrick

Penguin: Pride and Prejudice #1

By Gregg Hurwitz, Szymon Kudranski, & John Kalisz

The most startling panel of the week. If The Penguin is giving you that look you know that what’s coming next isn’t going to be good.

— Conor Kilpatrick

Comments

  1. Maxine looks like a young Matt Murdock in that panel….

  2. The Walking Dead panels definitely had me going “Awwww yeah.” Penguin had a lot of great sinister moments. And other than basically all of Chew, the Cliff panel from Animal Man was the only thing that actually made me laugh out loud this week. Great stuff.

  3. This week of DC reads kinda freaked me out. The twisty head thingy still has me … ugh eh guh. I really enjoy the lighting in that penguin panel.

  4. The swMp thing panel was a good choice, but like two panel later the twisted head, bob and weave, axe stuck in the wall segment had me questioning my own understanding of the human ligament and joint system. The reverse backward overhead kick panel in the huntress book left a similar inquisitive fascination.

  5. The calendar picture in the backround of Dalton’s Garage in Chew was my laugh out loud moment of the week.
That being said there were so many great panels in Animal Man that my favorites didn’t even make the cut.

  6. That Penguin panel is fantastic!

  7. That Swamp Thing panel reminds of something during the Moore run. Now I’m going to have to look back through them and be creeped out all over again.

  8. Avatar photo Parri">Parri (@pazzatron) says:

Maxine kitted up in the first Animal Man panel had me thinking the book was going to turn into a pretty messed up take on Little Miss Sunshine!

  9. Rob3E – if you’re struggling to remember what it reminded of you, you’re looking for the lead up of American gothic, specially in the agents sent by the Brujeria

  10. Thunderbolts and Caps comment about negros in the army.

  11. I really did love that lame pickup line with the mustaches, but looking at Lois in that panel, I really wanted her to respond with, “Yeah so did I!”

  12. I gotta admit that Moon Knight panel made me laugh loud too.

My favorite panel is from Action Comics, but it isn’t the mustache pick up line. (But it’s also pretty good too). It’s where Superman is walking away from the soldiers while breaking out.

    Yes I mean walking.

Morales clearly drew that one panel of Superman walking up the stairs while he’s being shot at. It’s just a great panel because he’s not even stressing out he’s getting shot at. Just calmly walking the stairs….I don’t know I thought it was hilarious.

  13. OMG! Animal was awesome, that kid kicks ass! Also, badass issue of the Walking Dead. It was tense for most of the issue, which I like.

I gave up on Moon Knight… looks like I’m going to jump back in.

  14. That Stormwatch panel was probably my favorite panel this week, second being in Action when Supe spins around and has a heat-vision spiral around him.

  15. You do not fuck with Michonne, Not only is she the best character in Walking Dead, she is by far the scariest. Don’t believe me? You haven’t read the Governor saga.

  16. Can someone explain what’s funny about the stormwatch panel?

  17. moonknight made me laugh pretty hard
Animal man though, just that whole kitchen scene shows why this book is just a step above.

  18. Swamp Thing was the best looking book this week. Some of those page layouts were just spectacular!

  19. I just read Swamp Thing this morning, and that might have had the most beautiful art of any book this week, though there was some great suff in other titles as well. The Stormwatch panel is a good choice, though I was kinda hoping for one of those views of the moon’s eye . . . Best twist/reveal was last page of OMAC, though I get why you wouldn’t post it . . .

One of these days, I’ll jump on Moon Knight and give it a try. Just need a hole in my budget somewhere . . .

May have to pick up that Penguin book next week . . .

  20. Week 2 is a bit of a turn around. I liked Animal Man #1 and was a little bit about Swamp Thing #1, thinking this thing might have promise. Now, SW has shown it’s living up to it’s potential. On the other hand, the art in Animal Man doesn’t work for me and the daughter is almost as annoying as the youngest child on the “Terra Nova” TV series. OMAC looks like it will continue to please.

  21. Yes! “Back in a minute” was one of the greatest panels!

  22. If Namor and Satanna were killing-machine slut-bots who USED to be portrayed as having ACTUAL feelings of love and compassion, but are now instead just looking to drop their panties for whichever hard-body super “hero” happens to be standing next to them with their shirt off, I could understand being Starfire and being upset. Of course, if I’m Starfire NOW, I imagine I wouldn’t give a shit about any “double standards”.
