Buffy The Vampire Slayer #19

Buffy The Vampire Slayer – Season 9 #1

by Joss Whedon, Georges Jeanty, Dexter Vines, Michelle Madsen, Richard Starkings and Jimmy Betancourt

We’ve all had that moment, when we try to recollect the events of the night before at a wild party or night out. Jeanty and Whedon deliver the perfect highlights and flashes of a night that will never be forgotten, or easily remembered for Buffy Summers

– Ron Richards

27: Second Set #1

by Charles Soule and Renzo Podesta

I am a sucker for the “fat kid at the pool” joke, and I thought it before she said it. Sometimes that’s all I need.

– Josh Flanagan

John Carter: A Princess of Mars #1

John Carter: A Princess of Mars #1

By Roger Langridge and Filipe Andrade

“There’s so much coiled energy in this book and each moment of actions feels spring-loaded. I’m marveling at Andrade’s bold depiction of anatomy in motion and at rest.”

-Paul Montgomery

Batwoman #1

Batwoman #1

by J.H. Williams III, W. Haden Blackman, Dave Stewart and Todd Klein

No one shows visual action the way J.H. Williams III does and after all these years, it’s fantastic to finally see Batwoman rolling into action again. With his dynamic layouts and fluid motion, it was this double page spread that made me giggle  with delight that we’re going to get this monthly.

Batwoman #1

Batwoman #1

by J.H. Williams III, W. Haden Blackman, Dave Stewart and Todd Klein

And yet, it’s the quiet moments like these that I find myself really loving in J.H. Williams and Dave Stewart’s work. In the span of just 3 panels, they’re able to deliver such an evocative and quietly emotional moment. It’s sheer brilliance

– Ron Richards

Daredevil #3

by Mark Waid, Paolo Rivera, Joe Rivera, Javier Rodriguez, & Joe Caramagna

TThis book… she is funny, no? This is the best effect the villain Klaw has ever had on a superhero scene. I also like how he got louder after being told he was shouting. That’s some good lettering for you.

– Josh Flanagan

New Avengers #16

New Avengers #16

by Brian Michael Bendis, Mike Deodato, Rain Beredo & Joe Caramagna

I never knew I needed to see Daredevil using a machine gun with the sound effect “Scabam” until I saw this on the page.

– Ron Richards

Suicide Squad #1

by Adam Glass, Federico Dallocchio, Ransom Getty, Scott Hanna, Val Staples, & Jared K. Fletcher

It’s just a great reply after looking at the composition of the shot. This panel might have softened me on the whole issue.

– Josh Flanagan

Black Panther #523

Black Panther: The Man Without Fear #523

by David Liss & Francesco Francavilla

Man, do I love me some Hate Monger punching. That never gets old. Ever.

– Ron Richards

Deathstroke #1

by Kyle Higgins, Joe Bennett, Art Thibert, Jason Wright, & Travis Lanham

If you read this issue, you know that this is the part where you sigh with relief that you never have to spend another moment with the characters whom Deathstroke is terminating. Saved the whole thing for me.

– Josh Flanagan

Green Lantern #1

Green Lantern #1

by Geoff Johns, Doug Mahnke, Christian Alamay with Tom Nguyen, David Baron and Sal Cipriano

There is nothing better than sad sack Hal Jordan stories, and this taste of real life as Hal struggles to pay his bills is a glimpse into what we hope will be more tales of Hal Jordan, sad sack.

– Ron Richards

Comments

  1. Two things. well three things. Okay wait four.

    1. great panels
    2. the guy tyelling naked in the buffy panel has the most non enthused facial expression for trying to get a gir’ls clothes off.
    3. loved the DD panel
    4. would DD be shouting after unloading a gun like that like he does in the previous DD panel?

  2. If Daredevil kicked that much Nazi ass in New Avengers by himself, why is there a Fear Itself? Wouldn’t that machine gun fire throw his radar sense all out of whack? It was a good issue though. New Avengers has been consistently great, except for the crap ass annual.

  3. Is anyone else as creeped out as I am by how young Buffy looks in that page? I don’t read Buffy, but the proportions seem a little childish. I get a real Toddlers and Tiaras vibe off of that.

    • Interesting. I looked at it and thought it appeared about right as Sarah Michelle Gellar is rather petite in real life. Next to a guy of average height or taller she’s always going to appear tiny.

  4. Waitaminute! Journey Into Mystery! “The Devil likes his pretzels!”

  5. What about the “Cried like a baby” panel from Criminal? That really got me.

  6. Journey Into Mystery is by far the best Asgard book out there.

  7. JHW3 shows us all that buying Batwoman in digital just isn’t going to work. Your eyes literally need to dance all over the magic of all these double page spreads.

    • It’s very hard to do that with a stupid drop shadow and page split on the screen.

    • @RolandofGilead and that’s why for the first time in my fandom after I bought and read a comic digitally I went out and bought the issue!! Sorry, but to really appreciate JHW3 layouts, action sequences and overall presentation you GOTTA have the real thing!! SOOO beautiful!
Also, props to the Colorist on BW#1, Dave Stewart just makes the red POP off the pages and the creepy sequences are just the right tone. Fantastic all-round issue

  8. sweet art. the batwoman panel is everywhere. nice

  9. What? No Cap telling Odin to “Shove It” (or whatever, I’m paraphrasing) in Fear Itself? That was the basic redeeming point of the entire series for me…

  10. “Whatever. Let’s Screw”? Really? Flatline ——————————-

  11. No panel of Dex-Starr scalping the alien hunter? Boooooo!

  12. No mention of the Russian Batman waking up to see himself dissolving in acid? That was pretty fucked up.

  13. The scene in this month’s Scalped showing Red Crow putting his partners in place was fantastic. I was kind of cheering for him.

  14. The Deathstroke sequence is great….it blew my mind! I saw the other character they were introducing and just went….really? they’re doing this?? so after seeing Deathstroke’s comment, to the effect of “She was right, the spray really is better on this one” just cracked me up AND left me stunned, both.

  15. Goodness gracious, I read that “I could so win at that.” in Sarah Michelle Gellar’s exact voice.

  16. I don’t care if it is the spoiler of the issue the last page of Ultimate Spider-man needed to be a panel of the wee.
