The Best of the Week in Panels – 06/23/2010

Panels. If they're made of asbestos, prolonged exposure can lead to malignant mesothelioma. That's no good. But then there's comic panels. If they're the really good ones you'll want to look at those again and again, even for hours on end. But then you could lose your job. And you might end up squatting in a condemned building which contains asbestos. You really can't win.

Anyway, here are some of the better panels from this week:

Seven Psychopaths #2

Just another day at the office. Perfect page? Quite possibly.

–Paul Montgomery

Sea Bear and Grizzly Shark #1

It's a simple image.  It's a boat. It's a bear. But I want you to think. Have you ever seen these two elements together? Also, it's pretty clear that the bear killed the hell out of everything else that was on that boat, and now, he's pretty self-satisfied.  I say good for you, Sea Bear.  Keep on keepin' on.

–Josh Flanagan

Thunderbolts #145

My favorite throwaway background in a while. On the way to meet the Raft's warden, Luke Cage walks past a random room where a supervillain is about to get "treatment." I have no idea what is about to happen to that guy, and I will pay good money to never find out.

–Jim Mroczkowski

Batman: The Return of Bruce Wayne #3

Remember that time Batman fought Blackbeard the pirate on a bridge made of human skulls, femurs, and spinal columns? Yeah. This totally happened. To anyone who ever dueled invisible corsairs with a cardboard tube while bouncing on a couch, this one's for you.

–Paul Montgomery

That Sea Bear panel is amazing. I must read that comic.

  2. After seeing the pannel form Sea Bear and Grizzly Shark. Makes me wish my LCS had it. :-(

  3. odare77 says:

But seriously, the art in that Thunderbolts panel? Sweet.

  4. pppiquer pppiquer says:

Return of Bruce Wayne is so effing epic

  5. cromulent cromulent says:

Looks like he has a bone to pick with Batman.

  6. bluedream bluedream says:

You just know that Grant Morrison smoked a boatload of pot while writing Return of Bruce Wayne.

As Bill Hicks said, "… they were real f—ing high on drugs"

  7. The Batman one is precisely how I want to go: Sword-fighting Blackbeard on a bridge of human bones.

  8. LiquidSnake LiquidSnake says:

No Avengers panel with everyone eating pizza, Wolverine playing with Spider-Woman’s hair, Spider-Woman zapping Wolverine, Thor eating pizza while lifting Spider-man and a huge ass machine with one hand, and Spider-man using his webs as a chair?

  9. SirSullymore SirSullymore says:

I really liked that "The Justice League International!!" page from generation lost.

  10. LordTrygve says:

Jim: The next few panels show green "goo" splshing out of the treatment room in Thunderbolts.  Apparently whatever treatment it was makes a mess.

  11. Tiocore Tiocore says:

And to top off the radi-coolness of this week’s Return of Bruce Wayne, we get a teaser of the next story featuring none other than Jonah! Holy poop I can’t wait.

  12. tomdpimp tomdpimp says:

No AVENGERS #2 panels???  You make my review look bad…

  13. Don’t know why I noticed this but: Look at Blackbeard’s legs in that panel…..Who’s hands are those?

  14. @champ: I assumed it was a fashionable scarf!

  15. ghettojourno ghettojourno says:

    @TheNextChampion Could be his gloves.

  16. Paul Montgomery PaulMontgomery (@fuzzytypewriter) says:

It’s a scarf he has wrapped around his waist.

  17. It does look like a scarf…..I’m sorry it does look like a hand. I thought for a second that maybe, for some reason, he has a severed hand tied to his pants.

  18. Crucio Crucio says:

I’m going with severed hand because that would be so much better then a scarf.

  19. Paul Montgomery PaulMontgomery (@fuzzytypewriter) says:

It’s a scarf. It appears in several other panels.

  20. @Paul: I don’t know why, but Blackbeard having a scarf is the most unrealistic thing about this issue. Which is weird considering the plot of this issue involves a superhero being trapped in time and being helped by Bat-people.

  21. Bendrix Bendrix says:

Who’s the artist on Thunderbolts? That looks great.

  22. Paul Montgomery PaulMontgomery (@fuzzytypewriter) says:

    @bendrix – That’s Kev Walker. Fantastic, right?

  23. Bendrix Bendrix says:

@Paul Indeed. Highly detailed without looking over-rendered. Reminds me a little of Travis Charest.

  24. Paul Montgomery PaulMontgomery (@fuzzytypewriter) says:

There’s even some Templesmith in there too.

  25. Bendrix Bendrix says:

Which always is a good thing.

  26. Diabhol Diabhol says:

I’m gonna say it; Bruce looks fat in that panel.

  27. Mangaman Mangaman says:

@Diabhol: now he looks fat? NOW? After how many years in tights and the one time he isn’t he’s fat? XD!!!! priceless.

  28. SamMorgan SamMorgan says:

Kev Walkers fully painted ABC Warrior art from 2000AD is just spectacular!
