The Best of the Week in Panels – 04.10.2013

I’ve seen bickering and family quarrels and mysterious trips at night, and knives and saws and ropes, and now since last evening, not a sign of the panels. How do you explain that?

Thor

Thor: God of Thunder #7

By Jason Aaron, Esad Ribic, & Ive Svorcina

YES!

— Josh Flanagan

The Rocketeer_Hollywood Horror_3_Panel

The Rocketeer: Hollywood Horror #3

By Rogetr Langridge, J. Bone, Jordie Bellaire, & Tom B. Long

They don’t make charmingly boozy detectives quite like Nick and Nora Charles anymore.

— Conor Kilpatrick

UncannyAvengers6_panel

Uncanny Avengers #6

By Rick Remender, Daniel Acuña, & Chris Eliopoulos

Technically, Rick Remender hasn’t ruined comics yet, and he’s currently actually making them much better. There are fan service moments that are tedious, and then there are moments like this that are fantastic.

— Josh Flanagan

Batman_Lil Gotham_1_Panel

Batman: Li’l Gotham #1

By Dustin Nguyen, Derek Fridolfs, & Saida Temofonte

It’s not often that you get a mainstream superhero book done in gorgeous watercolor, so enjoy it while you can.

— Conor Kilpatrick

hawkeye9_panel

Hawkeye #9

By Matt Fraction, David Aja, Matt Hollingsworth, & Chris Eliopoulos

Storytelling’s smoother’n a butter cookie.

— Josh Flanagan

Saga_12_Panel

Saga #12

By Brian K. Vaughan, Fiona Staples, & Fonografiks

You’ve got a seal talking to a guy with a TV for a head and there’s so much great body language and acting in these two panels. Fiona Staples is magnificent.

— Conor Kilpatrick

 AvengersArena7_panel1  AvengersArena7_panel2

Avengers Arena #7

By Dennis Hopeless, Alessandro Vitti, Rain Baredo, & Joe Caramagna

Taskmaster is a gourmand.

— Josh Flanagan

Star Wars_4_Panel 1

Star Wars #4

By Brian Wood, Carlos D’Anda, Gabe Eltaeb, & Michael Heisler

Chewie downed a couple of TIE fighters with his bowcaster while engaged n a high speed chase through the underbelly of Coruscant. Chewie doesn’t need a medal to know that he’s a badass.

— Conor Kilpatrick

Batman_19_Panel

Batman #19

By Jame Tynion IV, Alex Maleev, Brad Anderson, & Dezi Sienty

I would read an entire book of Batman explaining basic feelings to Superman, it’d be both hilarious and educational.

— Ryan Haupt

   Uncanny X-Men_4_Panel

Uncanny X-Men #4

By Brian Michael Bendis, Chris Bachalo, Tim Townsend or Jaime Mendoza or Al Vey or Victor Olazaba, & Joe Caramagna

There are two things I love about this sequence. One, I love the crazy, manic energy and sense of movement that Bachalo infuses into the top section. Two, I love that the X-Men have and app to control the Danger Room.

Comments

  1. I like the Batman backup better than the main story and that was the panel that sealed it.

Also can the seal man become a main character in Saga? I am pretty sure I could get my fiance to read it if he was a mainstay.

  2. How many “last charges” have the Asgardians had now? Do the troops just roll their eyes and go with it?

    • There are no troops; it’s literally just the two of them left.

    • An entire of issue of the Gods of Thunder was tragic and awesome

    • There were a ton of great panels in that issue, Old Thor listing all of the things Thor hadn’t done yet and then telling himself to forget he said anything, the contents of the AllFather’s secret room, and Young Post-Coital Thor made an appearance!

    • “well, I suppose one drink couldn’t hurt.”

My favorite part was modern Thor declaring that he’s always hated time travel and Old King Thor assuring him that he always will. Old King Thor repeatedly talking about how great his beard is was a close second.

    • I loved the throwaway line about “an armory of Uru Hammers”. Aaron just delivers moment after moment of unforgettable story.

  3. Just about every page of Lil Gotham could have been on here. very pretty, very funny book.

  4. Rear Window! Nice.

  5. How Fiona Staples can give a seal and a television such emotion escapes me. She is incredible at what she does.

  6. The danger room app was great

  7. That Thor panel got me so excited! The dynamic between the two Thors is something that could be milked for years.

    • I haven’t bought Thor 6 or 7 but that panel is forcing me to. I swear, the great detailed hammer angles never get old.

  8. Why didn’t I get Li’l Gotham? So damn stupid for not buying that.

My favorite panel/moment was Wolverine eating the hobo ‘protein shake’. No idea why he did it and he even says so when the kid asks him later….Why did he drink it!?

  9. Secret Avengers #3: THe sign that reads “It’s been 192 days since our last Helicarrier crash” GOLD!

  10. All good choices and I’d definitely read a Maleev, Tynion Batman and Superman book. My pick would’ve been the full page right near the end of the shadow, on the roof, thought that was well done.

  11. I liked the Rocketeer but I thought it was a reference to Frank and Sadie Doyle for Beyong Belief, a feature on the Thrilling Adventure Hour. *Clink!*
