I’ll grow a beard. People from my old life will pass us through town and won’t even recognize me, they’ll just say, “Thanks, Pap,” and then they’ll buy some of my panels.
Arrow #3
By Marc Guggenheim, Andrew Kreisberg, Beth Schwartz, Jorge Jimenez, David Lopez, Santi Casas, & Wes Abbott
For one more week at least, this is the best Green Arrow book being published.
— Conor Kilpatrick
Hawkeye #7
By Matt Fraction, Steve Lieber, Matt Hollingsworth, & Chris Eliopoulos
I didn’t endure Superstorm Sandy but most of my family did and this panel took my breath away.
— Conor Kilpatrick
Superman Family Adventures #9
By Art Baltazar & Franco
I don’t know why but this sequence made me laugh and laugh.
— Conor Kilpatrick
Avengers #4
By Jonathan Hickman, Adam Kubert, Frank D’Armata, & Cory Petit
I see that Thor’s been hanging out with Ron Swanson again.
— Conor Kilpatrick
Aquaman #16
By Geoff Johns, Paul Pelletier, Sean Parsons, Rod Reis, & Nick J. Napolitano
Hey! It’s Hawkman! I remember that guy. He was awesome.
— Conor Kilpatrick
The Superior Spider-Man #2
By Dan Slott, Ryan Stegman, Edgar Delgado, & Chris Eliopoulos
All of the chatter is going to be about this issue’s Mary Jane mack/jack attack, but I do not care to think about that. I want to think about Peter Parker going full Frankenstein.
— Jim Mroczkowski
Batman and Robin Annual #1
By Peter J. Tomasi, Ardian Syaf, Vicente Cifuentes, John Kalisz, & Carlos M. Mangual
Dressing up as L’il Batman is the most likeable that Damian has been in a long while.
— Conor Kilpatrick
MacGyver: Fugitive Gauntlet #4
By Lee David Zlotoff, Tony Lee, Will Sliney, Owen Jollands, & Aditya Bidikar
Listen, man, when MacGyver is telling you how to make a smoke bomb out of ping pong balls and aluminum foil you will MAKE TIME.
— Conor Kilpatrick
Batman Beyond Unlimited #12
By Derek Fridolfs, Dustin Nguyen, Fiona Staples, & Saida Lemofonte
For my money, Fiona Staples can draw the adventures of grizzled middle-aged Bruce Wayne any time she wants to stop drawing Saga.
— Conor Kilpatrick
Punisher: War Zone #4
By Greg Rucka, Carmine Di Giandomenico, Matt Hollingsworth, & Joe Caramagna
This panel was wonderfully subtle. The first time I looked at it I totally missed The Punisher. The second time I thought it was an image of The Punisher on Tony’s screen. And then the third time I went, “Uh oh.”
— Conor Kilpatrick
Joe Kubert Presents #4
By Joe Kubert & Adam Kubert
This panel is all about fantastic body language: the man, the horse… even the house.
— Conor Kilpatrick
Masters of the Universe: The Origin of He-Man #1
By Joshua Hale Fialkov, Ben Oliver
This single issue is jam-packed with healthily bronzed sword and sorcery majesty. Plenty of fist pumping moments for children of the 80s. I especially liked this page, not just for the iconography of the sword and what it means for Prince Adam to grasp it, but for the layout and storytelling. It’s practically an avalanche of panels. No words necessary, either.
–Paul Montgomery
Batman, Incorporated #7
By Grant Morrison, Chris Burnham, Nathan Fairbairn, & Carlos M.Mangual
Tim Drake keeps evading death… but DC’ll get him sooner or later!
— Conor Kilpatrick
“It’s like vodka, but for men.” Is my quote of the week.
That’s classic, but “Surter’s Sweaty Orbs” is the take-home for me. This is what a lifetime of fighting giants does to you…I mean, these guys are GIANTS, in KILTS, and Thor has been fighting them for millenia. Of ocurse he’s obsessed with their balls. Well played, Hickman. A telling character moment.
At first – in the MacGuyver panel – I thought he was going to start cooking up.
Connor, do you want Tim Drake dead? If I recall from a podcast you also said something similair about Damian..
I do not.
Granted, I am mostly ambivalent towards Tim Drake at this point. I mean, if Dick’s not going to be Robin again we might as well have it be Tim as I am pretty much over Damian.
Conor was a founding member of H.E.A.T. so he does have a history of this kind of thing
Haha.
I WAS A ONE MAN H.E.A.T.!
Damien is a great character in the pages of Batman inc. I hope he sticks around as Robin for years to come.
Just a matter of time, Tim…
The Kubert Hex Panel: If you ever needed proof that Joe Kubert will be an immortal of the comic art world…
That’s actually not Jonah Hex, it’s a dude named Jim Torkan.
Well…it looked like Jonah Hex…and my point still stands – Joe’s artwork will last the test of time.
Indeed.
Wow, definitely gonna have to pick that up!
If I remember Batman Beyond correctly, Alfred had already died by the start of that cartoon
Not that the comic needs to follow the show’s continuity, but he’s gotta be ancient
I never watched the show but that panel is a flashback to when Bruce was still actively Batman.
Both of these things are accurate.
At the beginning of the pilot Bruce has a heart attack out in the field, and then it cuts to him shutting off the lights in the Batcave for the final time. I read these panels as taking place between those two scenes, depicting him being tested and then being persuaded to retire by Alfred.
Has anyone read MOTU yet? The cover and this panel do have me intrigued, but I haven’t seen any comments or reviews about it yet. Rating is currently at 3.8 with 0.0 POTW, so perhaps that is telling. I see Paul pulled it–hopefully it’ll get a little podcast time.
I read it and thought it was great. Glad to see it here with these other great panels.
The Adventures of Thor and Ron Swanson, now that’d be a show I’d watch
I’m going to miss Rucka’s Punisher so much when its gone.
Me too. Hopefully they’ll bring someone new onto writing another title featuring him soon.
I refuse to acknowledge him as being a member of the Thunderbolts. That’s gotta be a clone, or a skrull or something. :/
Yet I still buy Thunderbolts to get more Punisher. I just wish it wasn’t drawn by Dillon. I love Dillon but it makes me think of the Aaron run which was great but thats a diffrent punisher then this one. It can’t be the same guy. (plus he died)
I love that Punisher panel. More than any of the other Avengers, Iron Man has consistently underestimated Mr. Castle. He thinks he’s just a psycho with a bunch of guns. Oh, Tony. You’re about to find out just how wrong you are.
That smile Thor has kinda disturbs me a bit for some reason.
I loved the opening page of Batman INC where Bruce is falling off the building. You see his reflection on the top left and then suddenly see a Man-Bat take him away on the upper right. Great stuff by Burnham.
That Arrow panel is stunning. Great find, Conor.
Great panel picks!! I haven’t picked up my pull yet and really glad I grabbed that Masters of the Universe Origin, looks and sounds great, great creative team on it and figured since I bought the Skeletor Origin for Frazer Irving’s art I might as well have this one too. Batman Inc was the only book carrying pre New52 Bat-verse events over to the New52, so I was kinda bummed to see Tim Drake in that costume, the other one just commanded more respect as a hero or opponent, much more intimidating and sleeker too. Hawkman, Firestorm, Black Lightning!!?? What’s going on over there, mixing it up or what? I definitely gotta say Arrow looks much better than Green Arrow and am probably gonna catch up with that while its young. Fiona on Bats Beyond makes me wanna read that too! Seems like more panels than usual, I like it, same should go for covers of the week, too many good ones out there and plenty of solid indies getting overlooked sometimes.
What a week! I wish I could buy them all!
I can’t wait to pick up punisher: war zone in trade. would have loved to pick it up in issues but unfortunately I’m still waiting on the last trade for the punisher series.
