The Best of the Week in Covers – 12/02/2010

I only wish superstar recording artist Andrea Bocelli could see these covers. He'd make a surprised exclamation. In Italian.

Jonah Hex #62

Cover by Eduardo Risso

They're really good on The Family Feud

Baltimore: The Plague Ships #5

Cover by Mike Mignola

Mignola doesn't often devote so much attention to the background compositions on his covers, or at least, they're not nearly so involved. I love the forms here. The way he plays with light and color, even if many of those colors are neutral tones. Then there's the brilliant pop of purple in the foreground wreath. It's both chilling and downright elegant.

Taskmaster #4

Cover by Greg Tocchini

Tocchini, for me, is synonymous with crazy perspective. He even brings something fresh to a group fight scene. I don't think I've ever seen anyone climbing over Black Widow, literally stepping on the side of her head to find an angle on Steve Rogers'. And this might be the first time Moon Knight's been out-loonied.

Comments

  1. The Mignola Style and Composition is something that i love and respect. Its so interesting that an artist can reinvent the same basic image so many times over and have it so fresh.

  2. Anyone see the alternate “gore cover” on Night of the Living Dead Holiday special? I am not easily offended, but that cover was delightfully offensive. There is even a surprised horse.

  3. Everything about Taskmaster has been so great.

  4. @gregbmarcus  I saw it, it was insane.  I was counting inventory and low and behold there it was in all its glory.

  5. Tocchini is a genius.  “The Last Days of American Crime” was a masterpiece.

  6. the taskmaster cover is awwwweesome

  7. Some terrific covers. I also liked Freedom Fighters. is it icon month already?
