The Best of the Week in Covers – 12.28.2011

“Should auld acquaintance be forgot,
And never brought to mind?
Should auld acquaintance be forgot,
And auld lang syne!

“For auld lang syne, my dear,
For auld lang syne.
We’ll take a cup o’ kindness yet,
For auld lang syne.”

To a great year for covers and to an even better 2012.

That’s an incredible Archie cover. Very cool.

  2. spaceghost15 spaceghost15 says:

I almost made Flash my POW on the merits of the art alone. The story is good, not great, but the art is FANTASTIC! Unlike other books where the cover is the best art piece this entire book is visually stunning.

  3. Blargo Blargo says:

    That JLD cover is stunning.

  4. TomSwift TomSwift says:

    Definitely more Dali than Duchamp.

    • Paul Montgomery Paul Montgomery (@fuzzytypewriter) says:

Referencing Nude Descending a Staircase in its depiction of movement, not the Dada stuff. Not a direct homage, but it’s there.

    • TomSwift TomSwift says:

I see where your going- but I still think that self portrait in mirror- dali and gala with it’s use of repetitive perspective and mirrors would be a better example here.

    • Paul Montgomery Paul Montgomery (@fuzzytypewriter) says:

Maybe, but Dali’s not hurting on PR. Let’s throw Duchamp a futurist bone on this one.

    • dunno about that….Nude Descending was one subject in multiple planes of space and time depicting one action. I don’t see a conceptual or visual connection at all with that Flash cover. i mean its totally awesome and i love it…but i don’t see the Duchamp. Also, i really like that you brought art history into the conversation. =)

Love the Archie cover. The looks on the kid’s faces is pretty telling.

    • Paul Montgomery Paul Montgomery (@fuzzytypewriter) says:

The illusion of movement in a single plane. The flight of the bullet does nothing for you? That its divided up into panels doesn’t really….eh, whatever.

    • i’m thrown by the fact that there are half dozen or more narratives happening within those “shards” as opposed to one singular abstracted one. I love the cover but its a bit apples and oranges for me.

Any day that we’re putting Duchamp and Manapul and comics into a conversation together is a fun day.

    • WheelHands WheelHands says:

Knock it off. All three of you. I will turn this thread around and drive straight back home. Then nobody will get to be the art expert. Is that what you boys want?

  5. The Flash covers alone make me want to buy these books, unfortunately I’ve already made my list and unless one of the DC books on my list dissapoints me I won’t be buying it.

  6. WheelHands WheelHands says:

Good covers this week. Thanks for doing this on vacation, PMont.

    Oh, Sook. Never leave us.

That goes for you too, Manapul.

Also, why am I not reading Spaceman? He wants a high five.

  7. TurdSandwich TurdSandwich says:

This week there were a bunch of rad covers. All of these picks are great, I was close to buying Archie just for the Francavilla covers. Also, The Unwritten covers are always sweet, but this week’s was something special.

  8. usedzamboni says:

That’s not the actual Archie cover that came out this week, is it?

    • Noto Noto says:

      I don’t even think it’s this week’s variant cover.

On a side-note, I had no interest this Archie story, but I’m buying the variant covers because they are too awesome.

  9. JSAkid JSAkid says:

Great covers, I’m curious about this Spaceman series, gonna make a good tpb or HC.
