The Best of the Week in Covers – 12.21.2011

Good King Wenceslas looked out
On the feast of Stephen
When the snow lay round about
Deep and crisp and even
Brightly shone the moon that night
Covers, yo, be gleamin’

Daredevil #7 cover by Paolo Rivera

On a technical level, such a wonderful use of black and white. On an emotional level, such a perfect depiction of bliss.

Wolverine and the X-Men #3 cover by Chris Bachalo

Anarchy, thy name is Quire. The graffiti is outrageous and hilarious, but the look of satisfaction on his face really makes this one. Subversive and adorable.

Fables #112 cover by Joao Ruas

The color and finish on this sublime image of yuletide spirits evokes Christmas cards and advertising from a bygone era. You just don’t see greens and bittersweet reds like that anymore. Stack this up against any of Coca Cola’s Santa Claus images, because this is just an absolute image of sugarplums dancing all the way to the list of 2011’s best.

BPRD HELL ON EARTH RUSSIA #4 cover by Dave Johnson

Another propaganda poster, but the dynamic lettering just explodes off the page. Stand up and pay attention.

Comments

  1. That Fables cover made my jaw drop. Say what you want about the quality of the book nowdays, but this series keeps cranking out excellent covers at least.

    • Agreed. The issue was fun, but not great. The cover is extraordinary.

    • I stopped reading fables just after the end of the war, and keep wanting to come back, but then hear it’s not so good.

    • I disagree. It may not be on the exact same level as the first arc but a lot of it has been good. I really enjoyed the Dark storyline [especially the Witches sub-arc] – the juxtaposition of an easy victory against the Empire with the extraordinary difficulty of defeating one powerful figure was good and the climactic battle in #100 gave me chills. I would say that the biggest flaw since then the is a lack of focus with too many meandering stories. I’m hopeful Willingham can pare these back a bit. And I know a lot of people say it doesn’t matter but I really think Vertigo books have suffered more than most from the decision to drop page counts from 22 to 20. At one time this was the best book out there. Its true that it isn’t any longer but post-empire I have enjoyed every issue with one or two exceptions and definitely still consider it one of my top 5 favorite reads.

    • Fables is continually the best comic on the stands. What’s with all this ‘Not that great any more’ noise? This issue was a great tale, and the extra pages it offers really filled it out.

    • I think fables probably suffers from taking things for granted syndrome.. part of the human condition unfortunately.

  2. That is a very low toilet that Quire is leaning on

  3. Regarding that Wolverine and the X-Men cover:

    WHISKEY. DRUNK. BAMF.

    Hilarious.

  4. Besides the emotion and the technical aspects of the Daredevil cover it’s also cleverly “written”… a devil making an angel.

  5. Well, we know Dave Johnson will like at least ONE of these…

  6. The Venom cover this week was so great.

  7. You know, it just occurred to me…between the cover here, and the page inside of him sunning himself….we’re ummm…getting a lot of Quentin Quire crotch shots…

I suppose its fair due for all the skimpy female costumes in other comics though…
