The Best of the Week in Covers – 12.07.2011

“Clouds covered love’s
Barbed wire stares
Strung up, strung out
I just can’t go without
I could never drown it

“They wanna get my
They wanna get my
Gold on the ceiling
I ain’t blind
Just a matter of time before you steal it
It’s alright
Ain’t no gun in my house”

–A Black Keys song with the word “covered” in it

X-Factor #228

As someone who perspires in darkest January, I’m feeling this one in a deep way. This haunting, almost feral expression is beyond panic or fear. It’s the shock that only comes from literally melting, which I hope none of you will ever experience both because I love you and it would mean Melancholia is happening for realsies.

Betrayal of the Planet of the Apes #2

This reminds me a bit of the giant human heart walkthrough at Philadelphia’s Franklin Institute. Just bonier. This ape skull, marred by a murderer’s bullet, rests at the center of this mini’s stirring political drama. Alas, poor Varus.

Moon Knight #8 cover by Alex Maleev

The anatomy is somewhat crude, but the dreamy quality of the scene is downright enchanting. This is how Moon Knight views the world, with a kind of damaged poetry. The brushstrokes are altogether naked, and there’s something wholly appropriate about that, given the themes of this book.

Voltron #1 cover by Alex Ross

I mean, c’mon.

Comments

  1. Wow. That Voltron cover is almost cool enough to make me interested in the book. Almost.

  2. Looove that X-Factor cover. Good negative space.

  3. Speaking of “Melancholia,” that was a pretty freaking great movie.

  4. You had me at Black Keys. . .

  5. Dammit, seems like i really have to check out planet of the apes, its looking to damn good.

  6. That Voltron cover is pure Voltron. I love it.
Yet I didn’t hear great things about the issue at my LCS.

  7. Look at you sir with the pop-culture galore references.
    Music… check
    Movies… check
    Comic covers… awesomely checked

Great selections Paul and you stuck the landing with the majesty of the Voltron cover. Yes… come on indeed. For those not paying attention to Fuzzy Typewriter. It is all this and more.

  8. Damaged poetry… That’s the kind of line you give yourself a pat on the back for. Good job.

  9. David Yardin has, very quietly, been putting together some very good covers for X-Factor and I think this one is my favorite of the bunch. Maleev’s Moon Knight covers have also been really strong.

  10. That X-Factor cover was fantastic. And the issue was very sad for me. *SPOILER ALERT* Killing off NAME REDACTED kind of broke my heart a little. one of my all-time favorite comic characters.

  11. bro, seems you forgot to post that Swamp Thing #4 cover. It’s not too late to fix that.

    ๐Ÿ˜‰

  12. (gasp!) no iZombie!? (gasp!)

  13. Paul,
I liked the ref to the Franklin Institute’s walkthrough heart. Do you remember there being some “art” tagged on the left ventricle?
    Thanks
P.S. I had a Planet of the Apes Carvel ice cream cake as a kid! It was awesome.

  14. Winner is clearly Voltron. Damn , that is an epic cover.

  15. I still say Swamp Thing takes the cake this week, cover wise.

  16. I picked up the Voltron book based off the POTW this weekend and got a question to the IFanboy Nation. What does it mean when the covers say Alex Ross (25%). Is it just Pencils is it 25% of the real estate? Who did the 75%? why are they not credited?
