The Best of the Week in Covers – 07.10.2013

You want to run your hillbilly heroin fiefdom up here, that’s between you and the great state of Kentucky. I got no interest in shitkicker-on-shitkicker crime. But you will not drag me into this. The next time you set up an operation in this county or any other it better not have my god damn family name on the deed or so help me God, I will lose this star and the dance we do subsequent to that will not end with you finding the Best of the Week in Covers in a hospital bed.

Daredevil #28
Cover by Chris Samnee, Javier Rodriguez

There was a time when every Daredevil cover showcased our hero skulking atop a mausoleum or conspiring with gargoyles. This made me smile, thankful that Waid and crew attempted something so different and that this new approach has been so lovingly embraced. There’s an Our Gang/Dennis the Menace quality here I truly relish.

Astro City #2
Cover by Alex Ross

I kind of love that this is Alex Ross’ concept of a modern phone.

YNGAVN2013007-DC11-LR-1d285

Young Avengers #7
Cover by Jamie McKelvie, Matthew Wilson

The Young Avengers’ love of breakfast is second only to Walter White Jr.’s. There’s a wonderful Douglas Adams spark to this image.

Planet of the Apes: Cataclysm #11
Cover by Gabriel Hardman

Even for a dyed in the wool Planet of the Apes fan, there’s nothing so delightfully bizarre as the Church of the Bomb and those purple-toned humans of Earth’s post apocalypse. This particular chapter involves some of the most unusual and alluring aspects of Apes lore, and this cover serves as a spectacular showcase. Can’t help but think on both “See no evil” and “monkey see, monkey do” at the sight of those eye-patches.

FEARDEFEND2013006-DC11-LR-cc486

The Fearless Defenders #6
Cover by Mark Brooks

While the action figure packaging mockup remains a favorite, this sendup to the EC horror comic covers of yesteryear proves a worthy addition to Brooks’ playful catalog. Just look at that ghoulish hand. That’s some Mumm-Ra action.

Comments

  1. I like the perspective on the Astro City cover. Really wasnt keen on the Daredevil cover until after I read the story. Totally works for me now.

  2. The Fearless Defenders consistently has my favourite cover of the week every week it’s out.

  3. Love that Defenders cover. On that Young Avengers cover, what is the significance of “Breakfast Meet”? (next to the creative team)
Is that the title of the arc?–just curious

    • Avatar photo Paul Montgomery (@fuzzytypewriter) says:

It’s the official or unofficial issue title. The title page is a mockup of a menu with “Breakfast” featured prominently above the credits. In the previous issue, “The Toll” is printed in that same space at the bottom of the cover. It’s also the title on the title page.

  4. That Defenders cover is pretty special. Quite the pastiche.

  5. I really like the Fearless Defenders’ cover!

  6. I wish I could find a clean link to Gary Frank’s Superman Unchained variant. It’s amazing and exactly how I want Superman to feel all the time.

  7. You can’t not see Charlie’s Angels in that Defenders cover. BTW.

  8. They’re absolutely killing it with the Fearless Defenders covers.

  9. I want to frame that daredevil cover.

  10. The Defenders covers have been pretty good.
