Cover, Covers, Cover Recap, Ho!
Covers that are on the move,
Covers that are loose,
Feel the magic, hear the Roar,
Covers that are loose!

The Last Phantom #6
Cover by Alex Ross
The ghost who sits! One of the great characters in western literature finally treated with his due respect.

Iron Man 2.0 #4
Variant cover by Sebastián Fiumara
This is, very simply, a clever homage executed flawlessly. Except for that G-D bar code! It's 2011. How aren't there single line-width bar codes? Toss the rating and price on the side strip or on the back like a trade paperback. Placing it in the center is in no way artful.
Still though, a great gag utilizing a character who makes total sense in that role.

Superman/Batman #83
Cover by Travel Foreman
I don't know if you've noticed. That's Superman with a solar powered broadsword. And Batman. Riding a dragon. I also like that in this underexposed scan, it looks like Superman has his arm around the dragon's neck. Because they're buddies.
I'm going to take this opportunity to suggest any fans of Detective Chimp, Klarion the Witch Boy, Shadowpact, or any of the magic characters in the DCU go pick up this issue as well as #81, 82, and the forthcoming #84. Event comics done proper.

DMZ #64
Cover by Brian Wood
This could be a cover for the Complete DMZ Omnibus. What's sort of scary is that, while this is speculative fiction about modern warfare in the trappings of Manhattan, it isn't so jarring as it truly ought to be. It's a sliver of CNN. A newspaper page, not even its front page, glanced in the periphery.

Uncanny X-Force #8
Cover by Esad Ribic
Psylocke and Babu from Hanna-Barbera's Jeannie and Laff-A-Lympics cartoons have a patronus fight on the latest cover from a consistently stunning series. If you laughed at this incredibly obscure reference, I owe you a pineapple juice at some future brunch.

The Spirit #13
Cover by LADRÖNN
I don't even want to think about how many man hours went into the construction of this piece. It's positively daffy. It tells a whole story on its own. Or just enough of a story to make it absolutely tantalizing. What have you done to Ellen, you creepy old toymaker!?

The Spirit cover reminds me of Geoff Darrow. Very cool.
Hear the magic, hear the roar, covers are recapped! *guitar wail*
OF those covers, I Nominate DMZ for best cover of the week.
and for worst covers of the week, I’ll nominate Green Lantern and Green Lantern Corps for ruining the end of Green Lantern.
Good choices, and thanks for the Babu take.
He did seem like a vestigial character at best, considering Jeannie could perform her own damn magic. I guess after Joe Besser ruined the ’3 stooges’ with his pacifist bullshit, he had to work somewhere.
Like that Iron Man cover….Marvel does have this bar code obsession and i guess they don’t want to sacrifice the ad space by moving it to the back. I will give credit to the cover designer….at least they move it around and try to incorporate the block into the design. The Barcode is the designer’s nemesis…trust me i know.
The Superman/Batman story art has been really fun. Good Comics.
Whats the reference in Uncanny X Force?!?!? This was my least favorite cover of the series, but still pretty good.
WOW. on the Spirit. Just creepy and fascinating at the same time
The Spirit and DMZ covers are awesome!…just happens to be a couple of series I read in trade form
I remember Ladronn! He drew most (if not all?) of the James Robinson/Joe Casey Cable issues. They had a strong Jack Kirby influence, it really made the run stand out.
@wallythegreenmonster - does your knowledge of barcodes include any history? The books I bought back in college (mostly Marvel back then) all had a design instead of a barcode…Spidey’s head, some anniversary of the FF, whatever. Are those victims of cash registers no longer being manual?
Probably been covered before, but not that i’ve heard, and you claimed the knowledge – so any insight is ‘preciated.
@DuncanIdunno –I loved those Old Marvel cover design things with the floating heads and anniversary things. So iconic. Nowadays, if you can’t scan it, you can’t sell it. There are all kinds of rules for bar codes. You can’t modify them, they have to be black on white and a certain size. They even forced that secondary smaller bar code on us. Its rare that you can really get em to work. Totally the bane of every designer’s existence.
@duncanldunno
I know that the comics that had the image in place of the barcode were those comics sold by LCS’: the direct market, or direct editions. Ones with barcodes were sold in grocery stores and the like. It all had something to do with resale. LCS’ could not resell their comics back if they had too many, but like magazines, grocery stores and the like could. I think the image, in place of a barcode, like a void cheque.
@WeaklyRoll —oh i think i understand what you guys are talking about now. I barely remember that but it totally makes sense.
Ladrönn! I loved his work on the Marvel Knights Inhumans mini.
I guess that Babuu was just to show the audience (6 yr olds) that if they had the powers of Jeannie, they would screw everything up. Or just to show us a lesson on the potential problems that would be had if there were feeble minded Djinns.
@Paul-Thanks for the pineapple juice offer, but I stick with Frozen Concentrated Orange Juice or F.C.O.J. Now if you can get that obscure 80′s reference you are really up on your classic comedy.
Loved the Last Phantom cover. The Spirit was very interesting too. Made me look at it two or three times to see what was really going on in it.
I’m fairly certain Billy Zane is ALWAYS proud.
I strongly second Paul’s suggestion of Superman/Batman. Very good stuff.
I wish that ladronn did more main stream stuff. i love his art. his covers to the planet hulk stuff were the best part about planet hulk. and his run on cable back in the day with Joe Casey was amazing.
@comicBOOKchris Great run on Cable! Awesome art too. It was like Adam Warren meets Jack Kirby meets Moebius!
I had to look at the Superman/Batman cover a few times to see that Superman didn’t have his arm around that dragon. It’s too bad; he should have. On a separate note, I am excited for my forthcoming pineapple juice.
All of Ladronn covers for The Spirit have been real good.
Hope he gets more work in DC in the future.
@MisterJ - and if Jamie Lee Curtis din’t change the fit of your pants, you gotta be dead down there.
@wallythegreenmonster and WeaklyRoll – thanks – makes sense – I did get my comics back then from a specialty store…so there I go.
If I was a criminal and saw Batman riding towards me on a dragon, I’d give the fuck up right there and then.
@DuncanIdunno +1 sir!
god, i love Brain Wood
@edward - be glad you’re still young enough to get Brain Wood. A flaccid brain is an unhappy one.
What’s the Iron Man cover a homage to, please?
@Mart It’s a homage to the poster for the movie The Social Network.
Thanks Jeff – I don’t remember ever seeing that poster, though a Google implies that was the worldwide approach
