The Best of the Week in Covers – 02.22.2012

Covers are like alligators. Think about it.

All-Star Western #6

By Ladronn

Spectacular dramatic lighting here. I’m also partial to the ginormous bat in the middle there.

Dark Horse Presents #9

By Mike Mignola

Lobster’s a particularly bad cheater. Even dead people know there’s no Jack of Claws. The scale here really sells it. The relatively small composition is almost overwhelmed by the black negative space. But then that bold orange card serves as a powerful beacon.

Uncanny X-Force #22

By Leinil Yu & Jason Keith

This would be romantic were it not for…well, there’s a few reasons this isn’t romantic. Anyway, I really like the way the dragon’s wings break up the composition.

Comments

  1. That is one sweet Jonah Hex cover. Did Hex run into those cave-dwelling bat worshippers from Morrison’s Return of Bruce Wayne?

  2. I like Mignola, but I do feel like I’ve seen him do that cover one or two times before. Not a good week for memorable covers this week…apart from that Hex one of course.

    • Mignola’s whole deal is variations on that cover composition. he’s doing that Rothko thing. =)

personally i love it. It takes real skill to push the same concept over and over again and make it feel new each time. He’s a master.

    • Aye, I get that, but I don’t feel each brings something new. Still, a run-of-the-mill Mignola cover is still ace 😉

  3. The Fury of Firestorm was a pretty awesome cover as well. Yah.. believe it or not I said Firestorm. If you have not seen it you need to check it out, the way the ground looks like a skull where the field was blown up and all of those people died and Firestorm in the middle. Very cool.

  4. Hey did anyone notice all the stuffed owls in the mansion at the end of All-Star Western? It was really creepy, every panel had these subtle but noticeable owls adorning the walls. I love how they’re tying the Court of Owls in to books not necessarily tied in to the Bat-titles.

  5. All Star Western cover is amazing. The Bleeding Cowboy font needs to be retired though.

  6. Hex wins. Cowboys and bats are right in WheelHands’ wheelhouse.

  7. Surprised the American Vampire cover wasn’t chosen. All of the “Death Race” ones have been amazing.

  8. Deadpool #51- the cover was, as always, hilarious.

  9. Ultimate spider-man 7 had a great cover this week.

  10. …And thank you to Thomas Yeates for the Dark Horse Presents #9 cover I chose; The Once and Future Tarzan!
