Teaser: Valiant’s Harbinger Wars are About to Get H.A.R.D. Corps

Moments ago we decrypted a dispatch from Valiant HQ. It read simply:

Any Valiant fans of the early 90s will likely recognize H.A.R.D. Corps as a Harbinger spin-off by Michelinie and Lapham. The acronym stands for Harbinger Active Resistance Division. A mercenary unit funded by Omen Enterprises, the team was composed of comatose military vets jump-started and augmented with artificial Harbinger abilities. Those same implants also housed explosive kill switches should an operative be captured. Unlike natural Harbingers, the H.A.R.D. Corps soldiers had access to multiple psionic abilities and could also assimilate new ones after observation and analysis.

Bad dudes, is what we’re saying. And they’re back after nearly 20 years to make the Harbinger Wars all the more dangerous.

Comments

  1. Ha – I’ve been waiting for Hard Corps to enter the fray. Actually this was the only Valiant comics I read back in the day. Can’t say it was any good, but it was a “hot must buy collect and sell for big money” comic in that heady free wheeling early 90’s days.

  2. I actually enjoyed HARD Corps moreso than Harbingers back in the day. I thought having one ability at a time which had to be controlled via external handlers a cool concept.

    • I liked the handler part too. Added a layer of depth to the whole thing. I think I made it 12 issues. Can’t say I’m “excited” about it, but it oughta be cool. Valiant has been doing good things with these old titles. Ivar the Timewalker was part of the original Harbinger Wars, I’d like to see him make an appearance in the Valiant U.

  3. This new Valiant is like Crossgen used to be for me. Every title is a breath of fresh air. Its what i look forward to every month (this and hellboy universe stuff). So brilliantly written and (believe it or not) so much better than the original valiant (which is saying something).

  4. Excited to see HARD CORPS return and how Valiant re-launches them. I followed the series in the 90s and liked it. So far the Valiant re-launch has been perfect. Even Archer & Armstrong has been surprisingly good and I thought i would hate it. X-O Manowar and Harbinger have been amazing and the told of my read pile every month. Looking forward to Harbinger Wars….

Now if only iFanboy would show it some love and make a Valiant book pick of the week or review an issue on the podcast instead of complain about the latest Marvel/DC book they still shell out cash for month in and month out

    • “Now if only iFanboy would show it some love and make a Valiant book pick of the week or review an issue on the podcast instead of complain about the latest Marvel/DC book they still shell out cash for month in and month out”

I get that the iFanboy guys love Marvel/DC/Image and the occasional Dark Horse book, but they’ve said very little about the Valiant relaunch, other than the Faith-focused issue of Harbinger. For me, the return of Valiant was the single most exciting thing to happen in comics in 2012, and it’s only getting better this year. Plus, there is SO MUCH to talk about when it comes to some of the new books (especially Harbinger , but Bloodshot and X-O Manowar have also been thought-provoking reads in their own right).

The iFanboys don’t really have any responsibility to talk about comics other than the ones they’re currently reading and enjoying, but I’ve started to tune out when they go back to the old well of “how great was this issue of Hawkeye/Saga/Fury MAX.” I know those books are great. I don’t need to hear about it every month. No offense guys.

TL;DR: Bring on the H.A.R.D. Corps! I can’t wait for Harbinger Wars to start.

    • “For me, the return of Valiant was the single most exciting thing to happen in comics in 2012”

      I agree xtianhardy.

  5. Ya i think Harbinger and xo have been spectacular and bloodshot is really good too. A and A and shadowman havent disappointed me either. I just had a big smile on my face for the entire time i was reading that last Harbinger issue.

  6. Nice! I predict this event will be more interesting with higher stakes than just about any of the watered down events DC/Marvel endlessly churn out.

  7. To be fair to the IFanboys, they may not be talking about these series much but, they did offer this teaser today and another last week I believe. So, they do realize that people are interested in the Valiant series and seem to be trying to cater a bit to that audience.

I love X-O, Harbinger, and Bloodshot but I’ve only caught up within the past month. These titles feel like they are on the cusp of a tipping point in popularity. They’re just too damn good to go overlooked for much longer.

    • Yeah that’s a fair point. And I agree about them being on the tipping point. Here’s hoping that Harbinger Wars is going to make everyone in the industry stand up and take notice of how awesome this relaunch has been.

  8. HARD corps are coming back? Are they still gonna be based on the three Stooges?

  9. I like how the teaser image is a throwback to their first appearance in Harbinger 10 ( http://www.comics.org/issue/51840/cover/4/ )

  10. These Valiant books have been great. Harbinger is one of my most anticipated each month. Here’s hoping things keep clicking for them.

  11. I’m really loving Harbinger and Valiant Comics as whole. They able differentiate themselves enough from competition (notably Marvel and DC Comics) with their unique cast of characters and tell solid story.

I hope who ever they chose to write H.A.R.D. Corps they write it in the same vein as Secret Warriors.

  12. It’s all in the execution, and so far the new Valiant titles are really good. I’m excited to see what they do next!
