Sin City 2 – ‘A Dame to Kill For’ Underway – Shooting Begins This Summer

The movie and entertainment blogs lit up yesterday with news that the sequel to the movie adaptation of Sin City was greenlit and set to begin shooting this summer.  The first Sin City movie came out seven years ago (man, it feels like yesterday) and was co-directed by the comic creator Frank Miller and film director Robert Rodriguez.

There’s been much speculation as to if a second movie would ever happen, with the first movie grossing over $150 million worldwide. Dimension Films issued a press release yesterday announcing that the sequel would indeed happen and be called Sin City: A Dame To Kill For, and would obviously be an adaptation of the volume of Sin City by Frank Miller of the same name.  The script will be written by Frank Miller and WIlliam Monahan (The Departed). The release also stated that shooting will begin this summer in Austin, Texas at Rodriguez’s Troublemaker Studios.  Casting begins next week, although word is that much of the film’s original cast will be returning.

So all you Sin City fans hoping for another movie, you can thank Miller and Rodriguez for sticking it with it.

And for those of you who may have forgotten, here’s the poster for the original Sin City movie featuring Jessica Alba, which was on my computer’s desktop for much of 2005:

  1. Question: Charles, What has always bothered me about that poster?

Answer: I’m glad you asked, it’s the crossbarred letter eye in the middle of Jessica’s name. Drives me crazy.

    • crossbarred letter eye? no idea what youre talking about. sorry if its a joke that went over my head.

    • i think its because Cross Bar “i” ‘s in the middle of a word, are no no’s in comic lettering, even though its considered ok with regular typesetting (depending on the font)

    • @wally: You’ve really cranked it up a notch today haven’t you?

Usually my ears start to bleed when graphic designers harp on stuff that no one else cares about, but in this case Charles and Wally have an interesting point. The designers of the posters were obviously trying to mimic Miller’s lettering from the books. However, if they had bothered to crack one of them open, they would’ve seen that Miller plays by the golden age rule of only using a crossbar “I” when using the pronoun “I”. When the letter is found elsewhere, it’s a barless “I”. Just typing this made my head hurt. I dunno how you guys do it. But I will concede that you are a necessary evil. 😉

    • You know what always bugged me about that posted?

      That she is clothed!

    • @kennyg: Haha! That actually did annoy me about the movie though. And I’m not being a creeper. The character’s a topless dancer. End of story. If you’re gonna do something Jessica, commit or quit.

    • We call those “crossbars” serifs in the business of nitpickery

  2. Ah, Robert Rodriguez. You gotta love the insanity of a director that only makes kids movies and violent exploitation flicks.

  3. Finally!

  4. Bout time. I’ll see it. I’m a big fan of the series and I really enjoyed the first one.

  5. I’m there. Funny thing how Rodriquez knows these stories better than their creator.

  6. Yeah i’m excited to check this out.

  7. Obviously they’ll have to do a little bit of recasting, but if they nab Clive Owen and Mickey Rourke again my ass will be in the seat.

    • Mickey Rourke knocked it outta the park, but personally I’m hoping Clive Owen has a scheduling conflict. Normally I like him, but his take on Dwight McCarthy was about as off base as you could be (not too mention laughable). I dunno if he just didn’t understand the character, or he can’t do “noir” (don’t yell at me Josh), but his Dwight was the weakest link in an otherwise very entertaining adaptation. And when Jessica Alba is among the cast, that’s pretty sad. Besides, Dwight shouldn’t have the same face in this one anyway, so there’s never been a more perfect opportunity for a recast.

    • Mine was Michael Madsen. As great as he can be, his scenes in Sin City never really worked for me.

As for Clive Owen, I don’t think he was the perfect casting for Dwight, but the way he inhabited his scenes and made the very unnatural green screen set feel natural and made it work.

I fully expected Rourke to be the weak link in the movie. I never expected the performance he gave. The role of Marv really calls for someone who can portray a character carrying the baggage of a thousand bad decisions and a mis-spent life and he nailed it.

    • Yeah Madsen was a left field choice, but he’s buddies with Rodriguez so I can forgive that one. It’s a minor character. Dwight’s pretty close to my heart and I was disappointed with Owen’s performance. But yeah, Rourke. Wow. I was blown away by his performance.

    • Mikey Rourke really was great as Marv. And he looked really really good in leather. Both came as a surprise to me. So if there’s more of him in the sequel I will no doubt go and see.

Otherwise I wasn’t too thrilled with the first movie. I read “Sin City” when it originally came out (I am THAT old?) and pretty much lived for the comics for quite a long time, but I don’t think it translates well into a movie. For me the film just didn’t “flow” naturally and actually hearing the dialog instead of reading it often made it sound pretty silly.

But most people back then seemed to really love it so I’m probably in the minority with my opinion.

  8. Let’s just hope they keep Frank Miller away from the director’s chair…

    • If it were anything, but Sin City I’d agree with you. A large part of what made Sin City (the movie) so different was getting Miller’s active involvement.

    • Did you see The Spirit?

    • Frank Miller is listed as the co-director of the first SIN CITY movie and that was awesome. (Who knows what he actually did…)

      I liked THE SPIRIT.

    • @Grandturk: Did you read SIn City?

@pyynk & Conor: I agree. As would any fan of the source material.

    • @ WheelieHands – yes

@ everyone else – Frank Miller does not belong behind a camera. He may have been listed as “co-director” of the first one, but I’m certain it was because his setups from the source material were used nearly “shot for shot” and was clearly done out of respect.

The Spirit was a terrible movie.

    • No, he was on set and assisted Robert Rodriquez in the actual movie. It was a whole big thing when the movie was being filmed with the directors union. Wasn’t just “out of respect”.

    • @comicBOOKchris Yep it was a huge thing. Rodriquez ended up leaving the Director’s Guild over it as I recall which killed his John Carter of Mars project since I *think* Universal had it at the time and they don’t do non-union movies.

And while I think Rodriquez has proven his vision of the type of movie that Dame to Kill For should be? If Miller’s interested in co-directing again, it can do nothing but help the final project.

    • *Forgot to add* Because ultimately, Sin City is Miller’s baby.

    • i liked the spirit. pulpy noir stuff is awesome.
miller’s no spielberg, but he’s not ed wood either.(i actually like ed wood.)
his being behind the lens in the first sin city worked out well. his participation can only help the project. why change the recipe to a great dish?

    • The Spirit was maybe one of the top five worst movies I have ever seen. Maulin Rouge is on that list also

    • @edward
      damn dude. top 5?
to group it with group it with moulin rouge seems…harsh.

    • Yup, let’s not deconstruct The Spirit, trying to find profundity or any greater meaning behind the bad film making. It’s just a crap movie

  9. I love the first Sin City movie so I’m glad we’re finally seeing a second one.

Hopefully it’s just a panel for panel clone of ‘A Dame to Kill For’ like how it was for the last movie. Cause I am horrified in thinking that TODAY’s Frank Miller will write anything. I much prefer a less crazy PAST Frank Miller.

Also, what are the odds we’ll see an Occupy Wall St. joke in this?

  10. They movie was very well done but, crazy as it sounds, I didn’t like how they over-did the violence in it. I love the comics, and have no problem with violence on film in general, but I just felt like the film did a little too much of violence-for-violence’s sake. It felt like every act of violence was drawn out for 10-30 seconds longer than it needed to be, and the camera tended to do close-ups of the violence in ways that Miller’s comics didn’t really do all THAT much of.

Still, I’ll definitely see the second movie. It’s a great story.

  11. Hell yeah: COMIC SANS MOVIE POSTERS!

  12. Wow Sin City is like my favorite movie of all-time & for them to do the sequel, to hear that its finally happening, the adaptation of my favorite of the Sin City Graphic Novels, words can’t describe the excitement & happiness I feel right now. I sincerely hope that they get Rachel Weisz in this one. She would be perfect for Ava. Plus Rourke coming back is so awesome!!!!! : )

  13. I am REALLY glad there’ll be a Sin City 2, & having Monahan as co-writer sounds like a great idea.
@Conor – I can’t believe anyone would admit to liking The Spirit – that movie sucked balls (imho).

  14. Am I the only one who thought the first movie was insanely slow and boring ?
