SDCC 2012: Marvel’s Cup o’ Joe Panel featuring AvX and BABIES!!!

The Marvel Cup o’ Joe panel is a staple at any big comic convention. Chief Creative Officer Joe Quesada opens himself up to an onslaught of questions from fervent Marvelites and usually makes a few fun announcements for what we can expect to see from the House of Ideas. Sadly, free coffee is not involved.  Here’s a recap of this year’s SDCC Cup o’ Joe.

Avengers vs. X-Men
The Battle of the Marvel Universe comes to an end in October’s final issues of Avengers vs. X-Men. The issue will close out the publisher’s bombastic summer event and usher the not-reboot Marvel NOW!. Check out the cover!

Marvel NOW’s Jumping on Point-One
There’s also a Marvel Now! Point One promo image spotlighting Nick Fury, Jr, who looks a lot like Samuel L. Jackson. This new anthology will, as expected, include a bunch of small stories that work together in a larger plot that will help set up the new Marvel U.

Math and Consquences
The creators on A Plus X include Jeph Loeb, Dan Slott, Dale Keown and Ron Garney. The title promises to be the opposite of the recent AvX Versus but I’m still hoping it’s actually a new and awesome form of mathematics. Meanwhile, AvX Consequences will be a mini series written by iFanboy-favorite Kieron Gillen. The weekly title is a direct follow up to AvX and starts in October.

OMG BABIES!
In what’s likely to be the most adorable showdown since the Puppy Bowl, Marvel also announced A-Babies vs. X-Babies #1. What’s that? Er, no I am not giggling and clapping with childlike glee. Skottie Young is putting down his pencils and picking up writing chores (but he still drew this adorably awesome cover). Illustration team Gurihiru (Thor and the Warriors Four and other Power Pack adventures) will be providing art for the comic.

No word yet on if they’ll be sharing the nursery with the Muppet Babies, but I’m still going to picture Cyclops walking around in Nanny’s green-and-white striped socks and making sure everyone is behaving.

Comments

  1. That “Awe Some” isn’t a shot Johns’ SDCC promo poster is it?

  2. If A+X = .1, solve for DC 52.

  3. I thought the new #1s were supposed to be revealed in this panel. I even remember Quesada saying something about wanting to announce it before it leaked. So with nothing really announced in this panel should we expect Marvel not to announce any of the new #1s at San Diego? When are we going to know?

  4. The lower case “a” on baby Cap is a nice touch.

  5. Awful Jimmy Cheung cover. You can do better

  6. Cause we all know the Fear Itself aftermath books were great…..Wait a second…

    • The only Fear Itself “aftermath” book that was even remotely great was FI 7.1, where they revealed that Bucky was alive. Battle Scars was decent at the start, but once you figured out it was just done to introduce Black Nick Fury™ and Coulson to the 616, it was kinda blah.

    • Also, FI: The Fearless was just flat out stupid.

  7. I think Cyclops is gonna die. He’s the chalk line on the cover…

  8. Can someone please explain to me how there’s a black nick fury in the regular marvel universe because I can’t possibly come up with a reasonable explaination on my own.

    • He’s Nick Fury Jr. Old Nick’s illegitimate kid, Coulson is his best bud from the Army Rangers…

    • It’s amazing how Marvel set this all up in Battlescars and yet I see so many people bewildered on seeing this new Nick Fury.

I’m not making fun of anyone. It just shows how TERRIBLE that mini was that no one either: A) gives a shit or B) no one read it.

    • I’m leaning towards B)…

    • Meh, it was the better of the 2 minis that came out of it, but once they telegraphed that he was being set up to be the new Black Nick Fury™ of the 616, I stopped really giving a shit. I still bought it out of a sense of being a completist. Also that whole shoe-horning of “Oh, yeah, your legal birth name was Nicholas Fury Jr., and, coincidentally, your old Army buddy is Phil Coulson” on the second to last page….just….eh.

    • They should have gone with “Nick W. Fury.”

    • Illegitimate son huh…well I guess that’s only slightly less ridiculous that Nick Fury switching bodies with a black man or Ultimate Nick Fury changing universes permanently. Why’s he also missing his eye?

Interestingly enough doesn’t this open up to possibility for a white Nick Fury in the Ultimate Universe. Since ultimate Fury (a Vietnam vet) could have been fathered illegitimately by a white WWII era Nick Fury Sr. I can’t remember if we ever saw evidence of who Fury’s parents were…

    • Nick Jr lost his eye in the Battlescars mini series.

  9. I’m surprised with the little Marvel has announced. You would think they would use there biggest event of the year to showcase Marvel: Now! It’s 2 and a half months away and I have no idea whats going on. Will we be getting more news out of Marvel this weekend?

  10. Gurihiru are great.

  11. I hope that Marvel learns their lesson from last time and doesn’t make Marvel Now .1 horrendously overpriced.
Because let’s be honest, it can be 50 pages or whatever, nobody wants to pay $6 (or whatever it was) for a preview book.
