SDCC 2011: Preview Art from Animal Man, Swamp Thing, Justice League Dark and More!

DC Comics has unleashed whole heaps of preview art from the #1 issues in their Edge and Dark lines. I've included some of my favorites here, but be sure to check out the Source Blog for more highlights, including pages from Deathstroke, Blackhawks, O.M.A.C. and more.

Some of these are just spectacular. Starting with…

Animal Man by Jeff Lemire, Travel Foreman, Dan Green

JLA Dark by Peter Milligan and Mikel Janin

Frankenstein, Agent of S.H.A.D.E. by Jeff Lemire & Alberto Ponticelli

Suicide Squad by Adam Glass & Marco Rudy

Swamp Thing by Scott Snyder & Yanick Paquette

I, Vampire by Josh Fialkov & Andrea Sorrentino

Voodoo By Ron Marz & Sami Basri

Comments

  1. Those pages look fantastic. I especially like that second page of JLA Dark, the second page of Swamp Thing and that spread page of I, Vampire. So just based on these few pages I’m considering an extra two books to get in September 🙂

  2. getting: animal man, swamp thing, voodoo, frankenstein

  3. Is that Voodoo as is Wildcats’ Voodoo?

  4. @ButchCassidy  Yes, They are putting wildstorm characters into the DCU

  5. Art looks great.

  6. I had decided to not get I, Vampire until now.

  7. Wow. I Hope Rudy’s colorist does justice to those pencils.  But it all looks good.

  8. That Animal Man art is CREEPY.  I can’t WAIT to read this book.

  9. Those are really great looking pages.

  10. Beautiful.  Very excited for September.  This list is way shorter of the books I’m not getting.

  11. These are the books I’m most excited for in September.

  12. I’m mystified by the Coloring Pages art on Basri’s pencils on Voodoo but it looks good. I like this group a lot.

@PraxJarvin  It does look like the most erotic coloring book ev….that’s almost certainly not true, now that I think about it.

  14. The art on all of them is very good. I hope shirtless Animal Man is only temporary, though. I’ve always loved his costume. I was only gonna get JLA dark, Swampthing, Frankenstein and Animal Man outta the “vertigo superheroes” books. but those I, Vampire pages have me thinking i might be picking up another.

  15. Give DC credit.  They’ve promoted the re-boot well at the Comic Con with the release of fantastic art.

  16. Well Jeff Lemire is gonna give me nightmares with Animal Man….

@Paul: Pray tell what is the most erotic coloring book ever?

  17. 2 things one i was a no on voodo at first but now not so sure and two behind deadshot the guy looks just like crossbones any1 have a guess who it is?

@TheNextChampion  I’m just making an educated assumption that there’s one out there.

  19. @PaulMontgomery  Actually I wouldn’t doubt that for a second.

  20. I was really hoping that the Harley art was just the cover. These hopes are gone now.

  21. There’s some great art there. really awesome stuff. especially animal man.

Seeing Superman’s new costume pop up in other contexts like this really highlights what a shithouse job Jim Lee did on the redesign, right? Is it just me?

  22. The Swamp Thing pages are beautiful.

  23. That I Vampire work reminds me of Danijel Zezeldj

  24. Frankenstein looks pretty cool.

I really hope Voodoo isn’t all pandering, or I’m dropping it like a bad habit.

  25. Animal Man, Swamp Thing and JL Dark are the three books I am looking forward to most from this reboot. I just hate the title Justice League Dark. I think that might actually turn people away thinking it’s just another super hero book. The art on all of them looks fantastic. Still hate the Superman costume redesign and the more I see it the more I hate it. Although I miss the fish-nets, the Zatanna redesign isn’t too bad. Remember folks she is a Vegas style performer and what she wears is supposed to be a theatrical costume not a fighting costume. In her case fish-nets and high heels do make sense but that’s a minor complaint.

And isn’t that Wonder Woman back in something that very closely resembles her traditional red, white and blue outfit?

  26. I don’t think “creepy” is a compatible aesthetic for Animal Man.
    But we’ll see.

@ericmci  Morrison’s Animal Man focused on a family man trying to balance domesticity with all that is not. This new series focuses on his daughter’s burgeoning abilities. That feels like a source of anxiety and fear.

  28. Also Player1

I can respect your taste on not wanting to read a book that’s all stripping and cheesecake.
Your comment just reminds me of something I have been noticing.

But what I find almost strange in general is the comic book community’s almost big brother protectiveness with women in comics.
Let’s be Very clear here.  I am Not promoting misogony or marginialzton of women in Any way.
    Ok?

But some sexy ladies in some sexy outfits isn’t always a bad thing and if the story supports them as individual characters then all the better.

It just seems that there is this – “Hey that’s my little sister!”  knee jerk reaction when there’s a sexy time look for a female character around here and the fanboy world at large.

Makes me scratch my head a little bit- it the he doth protest too much way.

  29. Don’t worry ericmci, comic fans hate women.

    Sales support my claim.

  30. @edward  It’s not just you, the Supes redesign looks like ass.  More than a little disappointed that he’s making an appearance in Swamp Thing.

Those Animal Man pages are….strange.  Not sure what to make of them.  The I, Vampire pages look fanfreakintastic.

  31. wow. insanely good artwork here. i’m now interested in I, vampire.

  32. Man, what’s with that wack ass Superman costume? Seems very 90’s, y’know, when in doubt, add shiny armor…
