Reports of Eric Stephenson’s “Retirement” Greatly Exaggerated

Earlier today, Image Comics Publisher Eric Stephenson posted on his blog:

RETIREMENT

Time to do something else.

And then Twitter went wild speculating what this meant.  Was he stepping down as publisher of Image Comics?  Even Bleeding Cool reported  that he was retiring.

We then took a closer look at his blog and noticed that Stephenson also changed the “About” of his blog to:

it sparkles!
was an online scrapbook of sorts, compiling my various interests and obsessions as the mood struck.

28 January, 2010 – 13 August, 2012.

Which lead us to believe that he was simply retiring his blog.  So as opposed to reporting “news” that was driven from Twitter speculation and people wondering, we put on our journalist hats and picked up the phone and asked him.  Here’s what he had to say

iFanboy: We noticed the RETIREMENT post on your blog and the change to your About section. So what’s the story?

Eric Stephenson:  After blogging for over two years using the same format, I just felt like It Sparkles! had outlived its usefulness. I placed a lot of odd restrictions on myself – things like only using song titles for my headlines and the like – and whereas I’d originally started it to catalogue my interests for fun, it was starting to feel like work.

Ideally, I’ll be back at some point in the not-too-distant future with something a bit more focused.

iF: Are you “retiring” from Image Comics or comics in general?

ES: Absolutely not. I think my love of both comics and Image is well-documented, and I find it amusing anyone would assume I’m even close to being done. I mean, I’m launching Nowhere Men as a new series at Image in November. Would be incredibly odd timing…

So there you have it.  Stephenson’s blog is retiring. He is not retiring from Image Comic or comics.  You can go about your business

  1. Nothing like the “Is Bendis leaving comics?” story from last year then?

    Can’t remember what site I saw that on… 😉

  2. This is part of what makes you guys stand out from some of the other sites. You get your two confirmations or you go directly to the source before tossing up a headline like a high school newspaper. There’s something to be said for accountability. Hats off to ya.

    • So it’s the reporting of a non-story story? iFanboy Scooped the internetz!

Great journalism, a polite but very opinionated community ,and the site is fun!
That would be my wish for every “news” source but if all I’ve got is iFanboy I’ll take it and love it. Thanks guys.

  3. ha! wall played. gave the internets an actual literal scare.

  4. what the hell’s a tempest in a teapot? that’s a new one on me.

  5. iFanboy ain’t no fools, unlike Bleeding Cool 🙂
