PREVIEW: Wolverine #1 by Jason Aaron and Renato Guedes

Marvel Comics has given us (and by extension… you) an early look at Wolverine #1. Jason Aaron's the writer, Renato Guedes is the artist. Jae Lee managed to escape Stephen King's dungeon long enough to draw the cover.

Wolverine #1 hits sometime in September. So it's going to be a while.

First of all, can't someone take pity on poor Logan and pull those swords out of his back? He's never going to be able to reach back there and pull them out himself. And what happens when he starts healing around those swords? Gotta hurt.

Second, I am a fan of Renato Guedes's work but judging by these two pages I'm not sure he's the right fit for Wolverine. We'll see, though. I'm willing to give him the benefit of the doubt and I'll definitely be picking up Wolverine #1. How can I not? Wolverine: Weapon X is so good.

I do think that I'll miss Ron Garney. I'm hoping that he's not drawing this book because he's really busy drawing Marvel Comics, that book that I pitched on the Pick of the Week Podcast a few weeks back.

  1. Nate Nate says:

I’m not surprised at this, the Weapon X book for some reason didn’t seem as popular as the regular Wolverine book was. And now that Dark Wolverine is over it can go back. I’ll give it a try, I’ve liked Aaron’s work on Wolverine so far.

  2. Paul Montgomery PaulMontgomery (@fuzzytypewriter) says:

Very cool. Aaron definitely deserves to be writing adjectiveless Wolverine. Totally on board.

  3. Crippler Crippler says:

I wonder how many more issues are left in Scalped?  I don’t want him to hurry that up or anything, but, I’m also fine with him writing more books for Marvel.

  4. Josh Flanagan josh (@jaflanagan) says:

I don’t think you’ve got anything to worry about. He’s never specified an end point, but has suggested he’s about halfway through.

  5. drakedangerz drakedangerz says:

I think it’s about time I jump on and give Aaron’s Wolverine a shot. I’m falling in love with Scalped all over again, so I need more of Aaron’s work in my life.

  6. I’m not a fan of Guedes’s work (his stuff on Superman was just horrible). Here though, not sure why but I think it fits for Wolverine. Still will probably trade wait though.

  7. LostArtist LostArtist says:

I love me some Jae Lee.  I missed the Weapon X by Jason Aaron so I want to give this a shot.  hope to pick up Weapon X in trade

  8. Mangaman Mangaman says:

That’s one awesome cover. I want one of them katanas so I can mount ‘em on my wall and tell my kids "kids, that sword was used to stab a badass".

Anywho this has an oddly different feel from other Wolverine books. Since that’s the case I’ll give it a loook. I’m hoping it’s not 4.99. Those 4.99 #1′s will just make me resort to dcbservice.

  9. siraim siraim says:

I’ve been reading Woverine and Dark Wolverine, so it stands to reason that I’ll pick this up too… but is this some sort of weird Marvel/Dark Horse cross over event? The full page panel of logan makes it look very much like Logan is a Sith.  I’m tentatively curious about this new title.

  10. kaufman1972 kaufman1972 says:

    That cover is badass

  11. Dear Jae Lee, please draw a composition other than the one you made a career on.

    Thank you.

  12. There’s got to be an easier way to carry swords around.

  13. Mangaman Mangaman says:

    so… i’m wondering if Logan’s a seer now.

  14. Neb Neb says:

Is Weapon X ending, and this series taking over, or are they both running concurrently?

  15. mikeandzod21 mikeandzod21 says:

Yea not Guedes fan. At least they didn’t let him color it, his stuff he colors himself just looks awful. Also no a fan of the Jae Lee cover…but I am a HUGE Jason Aaron fan so I’ll be picking this up.

  16. ato220 ato220 says:

Looks cool.  I’m assuming they’re renumbering to a) see Jason Wood’s article and b) to end dark wolverine?

  17. AMuldowney AMuldowney says:

Criminy, this might make me actually buy Wolverine.

  18. MikeFarley says:

Thank god…another Wolverine book. People were starting to forget the guy he gets so little exposure. Now we just have to focus on getting Deadpool back in the limelight.

  19. ErronSF ErronSF says:

I’m missing Ron Garney already. But anything Aaron does will be great, either way.

  20. Banta124 Banta124 says:

Q: what was wolverine doing on the prince of persia set?!?    A:  persuading the make-up artist’s to give him that prosthetic chin.

…and on his way home he made a detour to get eyebrow trimming tips from 90′s cartoon xavier.

  21. dignan17 says:

I think the cover is great, but is it just me or does it kinda look like Wolverine is trying to take a dump?

  22. ericmci ericmci says:

    dignan17- I think you’re right.

Except I think he already took the dump and now he’s standing on top of it in pride.

Now you might say that’s an awfully big dump- But hey he’s Wolverine

He’s the best there is at what he does.

  23. Firebreather Firebreather says:

I really like Jae Lee’s art….but something about the squat..

  24. Unoob Unoob says:

Jaded old timer here bemoaning the marketing decision for putting , yet another, number one on this book. (this makes it what? Vol 4 now!)

That being said, I do like the interiors, and will be reading this.

  25. Didnt wolveirne just get up to #900, and now its starting again?

Oh Marvel, your tenous grasp of numbers never ceises to amaze.

Been hearing good things about Jason Aaron, and this seems a good a chance to give him a good as any, even if it is a bit manipulative to just retitle Wolverine and rely on the sales boost from that.

  26. marshak75 marshak75 says:

Finally someone picked up the John Wraith character and is going to do something with it!  I wish I could write Wolverine because it would take me 10 years to tie up all the lose ends various writers left hanging since 1992!!  The cover looks ghastly, but the story art looks ok.  Aaron writing Wolverine I’m good with.  Maybe it will no longer be boring as batshit.
