Preview: Penguin: Pain & Prejudice #1

This week sees the first batch of #2 issues from the new DCU, but we’re also looking at the first pair of mini-series. Courtesy of DC Comics, here’s a peek at one of them, a grim character study set in Gotham’s underworld. Written by Greg Hurwitz with art by Szymon Kudranski, It’s a showcase for citizen Cobblepot entitled Penguin: Pain & Prejudice #1.

Despite the title, it’s less Jane Austen sendup then a bona fide Penguin Secret Origin. What leads young Oswald to a life of organized crime? Is it all in those chicken fingers or is there something much more sinister in his old money upbringing?

  1. I’m probably gonna check this one out, i hope it can be just as good as ‘Joker’ by Brian Azzerello and Lee Barmejo.

  2. I’m really looking forward to this. Reminds me of that story from Joker’s Asylum.

  3. M’kay…wasn’t planning on picking this up, but WOW…those six pages changed my mind. Love the pace and mood on this. And the art..’gulp’…perfect for this!

    • Same here – I typically find Penguin to be extremely lame and was planning to pass on this. But boy did this change my mind. That art is gorgeous – very Tony Harris in spots. Love the coloring. I didn’t realize Greg Hurwitz wrote the “Girls in White Dresses” arc of Punisher MAX, which I liked. Haven’t read any of his other work, either comics or prose – any recommendations from the iFanbase at large?

    • check out foolkiller. and check out his novels. gregg is awesome!

  4. Interesting. I wonder if this will build on some of the family concepts of Gates of Gotham?

  5. I am going to wait to hear what some of the reviews are before picking this up. Hopefully it’s as good as Marvel’s “Red Skull” origin book that I’ve been reading.
If this was the old DC Universe I would probably pick this up without a second thought, but I am a lot more hesitant about everything now.

  6. I’m torn on this one. I REALLY enjoyed the run on Moon Knight that Hurwitz did with Jerome Opena (and I’d never read a single Moon Knight story before). And I really, really liked that Penguin One-Shot hat Jason Aaron wrote. But the art… That heavy photo reference style is hard for me to swallow.

  7. I highlr reccomend this one for anyone who is a Batman fan.

  8. I like the concept, especially if it ties into the Gates of Gotham backstory, but don’t feel as though I need to read it now as opposed to a few months from now. If the reaction to the book is strong, I may revisit it next week, but my budget is pretty tight at present — little was culled from my DC list at the end of September . . .

  9. Looks really interesting but I’m tempted to see if it gets a TPB treatment along with a whack of positive reviews.

    This was really quite good.

  11. gregg hurwitz is a awesome writer. i have loved all his comic (foolkiller was great) and his novels are the best.

  12. I would have called the mini series Penguin: Frank Reynolds’ Little Beauties

  13. This was excellent! Thanks for the heads up, iFanboy.
