PREVIEW: New Avengers #9

Stuart Immonen is one of our favorite artists and with New Avengers #9 he departs the series he's been drawing since 2009. Here's what Marvel has to say about New Avengers #9:

Every spy has secrets, but few run as deep as those of Nick Fury. Now, he’s finally been forced to reveal all to the New Avengers…but only as a threat born of the true foundations of Earth’s Mightiest Heroes comes hurdling out of a past long thought buried. This February, the classified origins of [XXXXXX] will be unleashed at last, only in New Avengers #9!

New Avengers #9 hits stores February 9, 2011. It's written by Brian Michael Bendis with art by Mike Deodato and Howard Chaykin.

Comments

  1. So I’m guessing that this is a fill in issue, and the regular penciler will be announced soon.

  2. Deodato has really grown on me. When he did that New Avengers arc with Xorn in it, I could not engage with it, but now I find myself counting down to the release of the Dark Avengers Omnibus.

I wouldn’t want to follow Immonen. Godspeed to you, sir.

  3. This book was beautiful once. I could not think of a less appealing art team, unless you threw Ashley Wood in there. At least this mean Secret Avengers will getting a new artist.

  4. I see Bendis is still bantering like her writes for Archie comics. Only good thing about that preview was Deodato’s work. Then again, Requesting top-notch artists to distract readers from his lazy writing has been a trademark of his the past 5 years. Guess nothing has changed after all.

  5. Any news on what Immonen will be doing next?  His work on New Avengers is amazing, some of the most gorgeous panels in super hero comics I’ve ever seen.

  6. @Texas He’s drawing Fear Itself, the next MEGAVENT

  7. @TexasZombie99  As gobo said, he’s drawing FEAR ITSELF.

  8. I find ifanboys taste in art to be similar to the students of the movie “Art School Confidential” by Daniel Clowes.  The class must draw self protraits.  The protagonist takes his time to draw a photo realistic drawing of himself.

The teacher asks, “Class, what do you think of the drawings.”  They all point out students drawings that appeared as scribbles, disproportionate, childlike cartoons, and heaped heavy praise.

When asked what they think of the protagonist drawing, they say “You’re drawing looks like it was drawn by a machine.”

  9. Deodato looks amazing with an inker.

  10. oh no…deodato. ugh

  11. Deodato is very hit or miss with me. I think he’s absolutely dreadful on Secret Avengers, but that he had some clever panels on Dark Avengers. Bendis just seems to play towards Deodato’s strengths, so I think that this might be good.

  12. Art aside…while Bendis has done a LOT of character work with Luke Cage and he’s definitely worthy of leading the Avengers at this point, but…”Thickness?” Seriously?

  13. @Jimski  Dark Avengers sold me on Deodato as well. His panel structure is amazing.

  14. I can read Deodato and I love the character work in this book so it’s not enough toput me off, but it’s a real step down from Immonen.  Chaykin, however, is still a master.

  15. right when i thought about getting back on the new avengers, this happens.

at least there’ll be a new secret avengers artist

  16. What the?!..I just dropped Secret Avengers because I was tired of his art!

  17. I think Deodato gets a bad rap. Marvel coloring is just dark in general(I think Ron discussed this previously). I AM liking his Iron Fist and Superia character designs!

  18. I’m confused on something here ever since this arc and art team were announced:

Why is this in New Avengers? If this is a story about Nick Fury, shouldn’t it be apart of Secret Avengers? Seems like it would be a much better fit. Or better yet: A Nick Fury mini.

  19. Well this is disappoitnting.

  20. Whammo! That’s a fantastic cover! I haven’t been wild about Deodato in recent years, but he’s grown on me a little from Dark Avengers.  So is Immonen gone for good or is this just a break?

  21. Not a fan of the art here…and i like deodato.

  22. the dialogue is still good. definitely getting it.

  23. So this is what…two months from now? I guess that means The Thing is not going to be the one to die.
