PREVIEW: FF #15

Ask anybody, and you’ll always get the same answer. Whenever you’re faced with stopping giant, insane, dimension-hopping space gods that even Doctor Doom could not defeat, only one name comes to mind: Power Pack.

Jonathan Hickman and Nick Dragotta are set to pull off something phenomenal, bonkers, or both this month when the adolescent adventurers team up with the Future Foundation to fight the mad Celestials for the fate of the universe. If this goes okay, we can all start petitioning Hickman to finish up the arc with Howard the Duck’s face-off with Mephisto.

To top things off, this issue will have a variant cover by June Brigman, the definitive Power Pack artist back when the market supported a long-running fun book about ten year olds.

This breath of fresh air hits the stands on February 29th, Leap Day, which seems appropriate.

  1. Y’know, considering that Hickman was the first writer in recent memory to use the Kymellians, I shouldn’t be all that surprised. Still, I am. And pleasantly so. And yes, I have a near complete run of Power Pack.

  2. Let me start by saying I am excited to see the Power Pack make an appearance in FF. I have been a really big fan of Alex Powers during Hickman’s run. What a inspired choice to fill out a team of powered youth!

That said, I must admit that I have never read a single issue of Power Pack. But, boy, do I remember all of those Marvel ads with the Power Pack featured prominently! Every time I would see those ads, I thought “Who would read that?!? Power Pack is for babies!” Okay, I admit I unfairly wrote the Power Pack off without giving them a chance. So, on some weird level, I am excited to finally see them in action. It will be interesting to see what Hickman does with them. One thing is for sure. He will treat them with more respect and love than I ever gave them, and it should be a good time!

    • Yeah I never even tried to read Power Pack back in the day…and I was probably in their demographic! I never wanted to identify with child characters in anything I read or watched. I wanted to be the bad ass grown-up!

I do like the idea of these guys existing, though, and think it could be some good “non-insulting” young kid comics if it takes off and Marvel does it right. Maybe Disney will have some of their GOOD qualities rub off on them!

  3. On another note, I would like to point out the problem I have been having lately with FF. Look at the forth preview page, where the Power Pack show up. In the second panel, there are two BROWN haired boys boarding the aircraft. WTF?!? The Future Foundation has three male boys on it: Alex Powers (blond, tall), Franklin Richards (blond, short), and Bentley (brunette). It is upsetting that the artist and colorist seemingly do not know how many members are on the Future Foundation. I have seen a panel where there were 5 human FF children. (There are only four, including Val.) In one issue, there was a sequence of panels where Alex Powers’ goggles disappear off his head, only to return a few panels later, which made him really easy to confuse with Franklin.

These inconsistencies would not be a big deal if this was not a book with an ensemble cast where the characters are all essentially wearing the same costume. Has anyone else noticed this? It’s almost gotten to the point where I want to drop the book because if the creators don’t care, why should I?

  4. Nick Dragotta. YES!

  5. Looking forward to Dragotta’s art. Bobillo wasn’t doing it for me, and didn’t Dragotta do that silent issue after the Torch died? I really liked the art in that issue. If I recall, and its been awhile – but it had those funeral scenes, the scenes of Val in front of the classroom, AND the emotional Thing letting out his rage on the Hulk and Thor. Shit, that was a good issue. I’m going to go read that again I think.

  6. If I can find it for less than $10 I’ll get the lovely Brigman variant. Good memories!

  7. I like Bobillo but this art looks fantastic. Does anyone know if Bobillo and Dragotta are trading off arcs or is this just a fill in?

  8. just called and ordered the variant , i was told 20 bucks… there was a long silence, and then comic guy said if i change my mind when the book comes in thats fine… so we’ll see where i’m at that wednesday…
i have a ton of variants from back in the day; however it seems it’s been awhile and this variant cover thing is a whole new animal now…

  9. Great, nothing makes a book improve in widespread interest or general sales more than the f’ing Power Pack.

Not to mention that their appearance totally screws up continuity. Julie is in her 20’s now, and the rest of her siblings are still Franklin and Valeria’s age! How do one or two siblings age normally while the rest stay the same? It’s almost as bad as Franklin being 7 longer than some of the newer X-Men have been alive!

    • Not to mention when Alex was on the new warriors he seemed college age… Why ask why?
It’s power pack!!! One of the top 10 books of the late 80’s early 90’s!
That statistic is totally made up but c’mon… Soap opera kids are 2 for 20 years… Love me some PACK

    • It would be nice if they had aged some in all these years. In fact, I thought from Kitson issues that Alex was at least in his late teens, say 17 or 18, which would have aged his siblings as well. Oh well, I’ll take what I can get.

  10. Powerpack are/were awesome. really looking forward to this:)
