Oh, Internet! A Strange Sampling of Avengers Fanart

Marvel’s The Avengers was a huge, huge hit. I know people who have never picked up a comic book in their lives who are rabidly obsessed with it. Tumblr is rife with 16 year old girls losing their minds over Tom Hiddleston (Loki). My Twitter stream is constantly full of tweets and retweets… and this is all a couple of weeks after the movie came out. A whole slew of my coworkers are going to see it AGAIN tonight – for some of them, that’s like the fourth or fifth time. I understand the obsession – it’s an awesome movie, one that you don’t even have to be a comic fan to understand and enjoy. There was very little about it I did not like;  it was the first time in a long time that I genuinely enjoyed a movie the entire way through.

With this internet wide fixation upon this fantastic movie, weird fanart has exploded all over the “blogosphere”. Considering I spend the majority of my day linking the particularly giggle worthy ones to people I know, I figure I would share a few choice morsels of odd fandom. They mostly revolve around odd Loki/Thor brother love; apparently people are obsessed with “wincest” on a whole new level since they’re “not actually related”. Another trend to watch out for: A fixation with Hawkeye’s buttocks.

Molly McIsaac is addicted to making puns and posting them to her twitter. Follow her, or Loki will whine at you.

  1. Awesome. The internet really loves its cats, don’t it?

  2. For the record, the box of kittens one is pretty much my favorite thing ever, and I can’t stop giggling.

  3. I love the one with Thor finding Loki’s dirty horse magazines. That’s some top notch knowledge of Norse mythology right there.

  4. The first one is my favorite. Lil’ Thor nomming on his hammer is just too cute.

  5. I like the dancing Thor one. Funny.

  6. What’s the source for the Vocabulary one?

  7. Oh my god, this is brilliant! 😀 lol

  8. I would totally play that Angry Birds game.

  9. If every person who saw the movie read comics weekly then the industry would be much better.

  10. Love the Avengerous Vocabulary – once again Son of Coul steals the scene (“weapon weapon weapon weapon” – heh).

  11. i actually think Agent Coulson would see a kitty as a weapon.

  12. The “internet” didn’t produce this art — individual artists did. Considering iFanboy is always so conscientious about crediting the artists of sketches and webcomics, I don’t understand why the policy doesn’t understand to other fanworks, just because someone has deemed them “weird” and posted them as mockable spectacle.

    • (That word should have been “extend,” not “understand” — my fault for hitting submit too quickly.)

We are completely agreed. If we’re unable to track all of these and provide appropriate credit, at the very least we will make sure fan art is credited in the future. This speaks to a larger problem of uncredited fan-produced art going viral on sites like Reddit and Tumblr. I certainly don’t blame Molly for wanting to share these, but if there’s any way we can find the original source, we’ll do so.

Meanwhile, if anyone recognizes any of the work posted, please let us know in the comments.

      Thank you.

    • Thanks, Paul, for the quick response and for the commitment to giving credit where it’s due.

    • The dancing .gif is from labish.tumblr.com — they actually made a whole (AWESOME) video that you can watch here: http://youtu.be/CJV2FiNIg6o
