NYCC 2012: Paul Pelletier Joins Geoff Johns as AQUAMAN’s New Artist

Today at New York Comic Con at the Justice League panel came the news that veteran artist Paul Pelletier will be taking over art duties on Aquaman from Ivan Reis, who is moving on up to Justice League.

Pelletier joins our water-logged hero with issue 15 in February.

It will be interesting to see how the departure of fan favorite artist Ivan Reis affects the sales of Aquaman, which under Geoff Johns and Reis had found itself in the top ten just about every month. The good news for DC Comics is that it would seem as if Johns is staying with the book for the time being.

And sales for Aquaman will probably only increase with “Throne of Atlantis,” the five part (plus a prelude) crossover with Justice League, which will feature the artistic debuts of Paul Pelletier and Ivan Reis on their new books.

Here’s the checklist for “Throne of Atlantis”:

Prelude to Throne of Atlantis: Aquaman #14
Throne of Atlantis, Chapter 1: Justice League #15
Throne of Atlantis, Chapter 2: Aquaman #15
Throne of Atlantis, Chapter 3: Justice League #16
Throne of Atlantis, Chapter 4: Aquaman #16
Throne of Atlantis, Finale: Justice League #17

  1. One of my favorite artists joining one of my favorite books from the new 52? Sold! From the interview on CBR, it sounds like he was looking for a regular gig and Marvel’s silly publishing plans didn’t allow for that. Bummed that he is leaving Marvel but very happy that he will penciling a book that I already read.

  2. I love that Paul Pelletier is taking over the art. He is one of my favorite artist. Is Johns and Pelletier just together for this arc? Is Johns leaving after this arc?

  3. With Pelletier the look of Aquaman should stay much the same. Glad another good artist is tagging in.

  4. Love Pelletier’s art! One of my favorites!

  5. To be honest I don’t think I’ve ever seen a page drawn by Paul Pelletier…..I know of him but never read a comic with his art.

But hey, it sounds like everyone is for this change so maybe this will be a good first take for me with him. Shame Reis can’t do both Aquaman and JLA though.

  6. So lame I now have to pick 3 issues of the overpriced/over hyped Justice League. God I hate crossovers.

  7. Sorry but just by going by that picture and the fact that johns may or may not be leaving, this is gonna make its way to the drop list for me. Its been a good run though.

  8. Aquaman has been great and Ivan Reis is one of my favourite artists, sad to see him leave on this project. I’ll keep it on my pull list until such time that it isn’t interesting.

  9. Exactly when did the big two discover crossover events? Seriously. Somebody on iFanboy knows the answer.

CEs are polarizing at best. Sure, they boost sales temporarily, but my informal assessment of CEs is that most readers roll their eyes and say Ugh.

What are the top 3 BEST crossover events ever from the Big Two?

Not most popular, but best quality. I realize there’s lots of opinions.

    • From a DC perspective, the roots are in the JLA/JSA annual “team-ups” which began in ’63.

That was pretty much it until Crisis on Infinite Earths in ’85. Most DC titles ran “tie-in” issues to reflect the impact of the event. This was new.

It was a commercial success that lead to subsequent & mostly dire “events” such as ‘Millenium’, ‘Legends’ & ‘Armageddon’.

    • Three best? I’d say Annihilation (Marvel), 52 (DC), and Sinestro Corps War (DC). Note that all three of them focused on isolated groups of characters and didn’t swallow up every single book with tie-ins no one wanted.

    • Oooh, Annihilation…yes! That is still a great story. I didn’t think of that as a “cross over”

I read every issue of 52 and the pre and post books, I have to say I got lost somewhere in the middle. I don’t remember much except that Black Adam is an awesome character.

I have Sinestro Corps War, just haven’t read it yet.

  10. if Johns is writing it then i’m reading it. i hope he sticks longer than the following arc.
i’ve never read a book with Pelletier’s work, but i’ve seen some of his images and they look good. definately worth a test drive.
Throne of Atlantis sounds awesome. super stoked that i already buy JL and Aqua.

  11. Love Pelletiers art……Reis is near impossible to replace but this is a good choice…..I’m happy the quality of Aquaman should stay top notch (still can’t believe I’m saying that haha)

  12. Hmmm…I was going to drop this book but I love Pelletier’s art. Might be time to reconsider

  13. That’s a great looking cover.
