NYCC 2011: Captain Marvel Joins (the Back of) DC’s JUSTICE LEAGUE

shazamOne of the lingering questions of the new DCU has been “Where are the ‘also-ran’ heroes who couldn’t get shiny new books of their own?” Whither Power Girl? Whither Spoiler? And what ever happened to Billy Batson?

Well good news, everyone who bristled at the phrase “also-ran”: Captain Marvel is getting his own series! Of back-up stories. Still: they’re in the back of Justice League, and Geoff Johns is doing them with Gary frickin’ Frank. So,that’s something.

I can’t help noticing that the DC blog post announcing all this avoids the words “Captain” and “Marvel” like they’re someone else’s property. Maybe it’s just me.

The Curse of Shazam will be in the back of Justice League before you know it.

Comments

  1. pretty sure that will justify the extra cost…. unless they are thinking of raising the price… YIKES

  2. Shazam yeah!

  3. Nice! Love Gary Frank’s work. Too bad I’m not buying Justice League.

  4. This makes me happy.

  5. Alright! I’ve been wondering what Gary Frank was going to do. While I don’t exactly chase Captain Marvel’s exploits, I am glad this will be in a book I am already buying and is a character I have moderate interest in.

  6. Great news ! Been waiting a long time for this. What a great team and very smart putting it in Justice League !

Gary Frank’s pic here really looks great.

  7. Perfect. Already reading JL, despite the high price point, and love that DC is increasing the value. Loved Frank and Johns on their Superman work and interested in the Captain Marvel character.

  8. Oooooh!

  9. “Curse of”, huh? I hope it gets collected separately.

  10. Hopefully when the first of the new 52 to wind-up their run (cancelled) The Marvel Family can at least get a mini. Even better would be to have these guys take the place of garbage man and the purple chic in the My Greatest Adventure series.

    • This is a great test for a potential Captain Marvel or Marvel family series or miniseries. Being in JL will provide the character with greater exposure and the creative team will hopefully tell a great story.

  11. I’m happy to see Captain Marvel again, but is Justice League the right book for it be featured in? I would imagine one of the more magic based books would be better suited for Cap. Marvel. Then again, maybe DC is building for Cap. Mavel to tie into Justice League.

    • Even if Cap. doesn’t tie into the JL title, JL is the perfect book for this back-up. Putting the back-up in JL provides Cap. with the greatest level of exposure, adds additional value to the $3.99 price point, and it’s written by Johns who is writing the main feature. If the back-up was put in JL Dark, the character would get less exposure, DC would likely increase the price of that title, and two different writers would be writing the material in the issue.

    • @glwarm Good point.

  12. Does Gary Frank have more variety to his style than I know about? Cause everyone I see him draw looks super old…

  13. This is sooo good!!

  14. yessssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssss!

  15. Woot

  16. Yay! Glad Shazam isn’t gettin’ abandoned. Hope Johns works some magic with him. Could we see a time where he replaces the big blue in the league?

  17. Ugh. That art is ugly.

    • I must hasten to add that that’s not the actual art from the book. (They didn’t post any.)

    • Yeah, the image is from Jeff Smith’s mini “Shazam!: The Monster society of Evil” (2007). I totally disagree about that art being ugly, but it may make you feel better to know Gary Frank’s style is totally different.

My only experience with Gary Frank is his Supreme Power work. Great stuff, but it will be interesting to see how it works with Billy and the gang.

Nice work DC. You’ve convinced me to pick up Justice League as soon as this starts.

  18. I should be excited for this, but I was really hoping for Evan Shaner to get a Captain Marvel book to himself. There’s no one in the industry that is better suited to be working on that character. I know it’s a long shot, but I’m still hoping it happens one day.

  19. I was so worried it’d be forever before Captain Marvel would pop up. I couldn’t be happier that I don’t have to buy another title to see it!
