Comments

  1. BQ: Brimstone or Doll House

  2. Top 5 picks:
    Saga #12
    Hawkguy #9
    Thor: GoT #7
    Walking Dead #109
    G.I. Joe: Cobra Files #1

    BQ: Terriers

  3. BQ: Pushing Daisies

  4. Saga, Avengers, Hawkeye, Batman, Thor, Star Wars, Sledge Hammer 44 ect What an awesome week.
BQ: Rubicon from AMC. I loved that show so much for the first season.

    • I was just scanning my brain for an answer to the BQ. Terriers was the first thing to pop in in my head, but you nailed it. Rubicon was just getting started. Good call.

    • It should have ended one episode earlier than it did, but yes, that was a killer when I found out it was cancelled.

    • Yeah a lot of people signal out Rubicon as the beginning of the sharp decline in quality for AMC’s original programming but I loved it. Def required an investment in time and thought but overall a really cool spy show that completely nailed modern NYC that would have held up nicely with Homeland and The Americans. Might have even been ahead of it’s time. Glad to know I’m not the only one that loved it.

  5. Pretty big week again. Saga, Batman, Hawkeye, Thor, Avengers, Uncanny X-Men, Uncanny Avengers (the preview art for UA is effing gorgeous, I can’t wait), Batman and Robin, Age of Ultron, Walking Dead (though I may drop this soon, I do not like the Ezekial development), Fantastic Four, and maybe Star Wars.

BQ: I can’t tell if a Freaks and Geeks movie that checks in with the characters as adults would be awesome or terrible, but either way I would see that.

    • Do you think the same cast on undeclared in grad school or there first year out of undergrad would be more realistic?

    • I don’t know about “realistic” necessarily, but I think it would be fascinating to see where either cast of characters would be a decade or so later. They were both shows that were so totally about what it means to be a teenager, that it would be really interesting to see where they wound up, who are they now? Though for that same reason it could be really bad, because it’s no longer about the same things.

    • Yeah the thing is I think most of the cast could still play 23 years olds which lends itself to a straight continuation of undeclared where as Freaks and Geeks would have to be a look at us now type thing. Speaking of Freaks and Geeks Linda Cardellini (Lindsay) on Mad Men last night was fantastic am I right?

    • Oh yeah, she was awesome, which is completely what inspired my Freaks and Geeks as adults idea.

    • Good call. Total teenage crush of mine that still holds up. You know if we were going to project all those characters ten years in the future I think she is the hardest one to pin down of where she would be.

    • I agree. She always a character on the verge of going in two drastically different directions. I can see her ending up like either her parents or her friends, but as always with Lindsay, I think the answer would have landed somewhere in between the two extremes.

  6. I did not preorder any DC books this month because I think the WTF! concept is insultingly ridiculous. Anyone else sitting this out?

    • Def won’t be picking up any new DC books because of it.

    • It is silly but they aren’t marking up the book prices because of it and I think most of the quality books will be unaffected.

    • Yeah in the end it doesn’t really mean anything other then another cheap way for a comic book company to sell more books. This is the first month I bought Animal Man in awhile so I guess that’s a net gain for DC in there WTF month.

    • The previous #0 issue gimmick had me cutting my monthly order of DC titles by 50%. Filler stories that interrupted a title’s flow, weren’t going in my stack. However, BS covers & propositions aside, I get the impression that each title’s stories are not quite being so rudely interrupted this time. So, as much as I don’t approve of this gimmick, it’s not deterring me like ‘month zero’ did.

    • Unpopular opinion alert but anything non Grant Morrison from the Zero Issues was trash

    • Based on the four DC books I read last week, I’d say the “WTF” elements tied into the ongoing narrative. The exception may have been Stormwatch, but, I think that book would’ve been taking a new direction regardless of any company wide gimmicks.

That said, the marketing concept of “WTF Month” is silly at best. Unlike the zero issues, I’m not really tempted to use it as an excuse to try a new series (though I will confess to flipping through the fold-out covers in the store).

    • @phess1 – heh, I couldn’t get over the sales spike that ‘zero month’ generated. A fine exception to the maxim, ‘You can’t polish a turd.’

    • @Hailscott: i’m doing what i always do, buying the books i like and trying the books that look interesting. I’m not affected by marketing stuff one way or the other. That said, DC dropped the whole WTF thing before it started, this month they’re titles have a gatefold cover. That’s all.

    • @drumanespic: Does the spike in sales for zero issues reflect the demand of fans, an emerging speculative marker or shop owners that were still trying to ride the new 52 wave?

    • @adrianrigter: Based on the Previews order form from months back (I go to a small shop that requires me to pre-order everything), all of the DC descriptions were along the lines of , “YOU WILL SAY WTF! YOUR MIND WILL BE BLOWN!” It bothered me that guys like Snyder and Tomasi were having to stoop to writing “shocking” stories to fit the theme (which, by your description, got dropped anyway). I guess this is an example of marketing gone wrong!

    • @phess1 – I’d hazard a guess it’s a combination of each of those factors. Done at the expense of committed readers frustrated by filler story interruption & long-term DC fans who are perhaps uninterested in yet another round of of origin tales that are mild variations on established themes, as instructed by Editorial.

    • The other night I was reading the Rock of Ages Trade from Morrisons run on JLA and Waid’s Superman Birthright and I couldn’t believe the difference in quality between those two books and what DC is putting out now.

  7. Saga
    Fantastic Four
    Thor
    Uncanny Avengers
    Uncanny X-men
    GL Corps
    Star Wars
    Harbinger
    and Shadow.

Great week! Cant wait for Wednesday.

BQ: I’m rarely able to watch TV much less a TV series….The last series I watched regularly would probably be DS9. Could we reboot that?

  8. Batgirl #19, Batman #19, Batman & Red Robin #19 & Saga #12.

BQ : Green Wing; innovative, daring, surreal & really quite brilliant comedy from the UK. Would make for an utterly mad cinematic experience. And, why not?

  9. 100 BULLETS, BOOK 04 HC
    BATMAN #19
MIND MGMT, VOL 01: THE MANAGER HC
    SAGA #12
SWAMP THING, VOL 02: FAMILY TREE TP

BQ: It got cancelled after only 7 or 8 episodes, but I think it could be turned into a great movie and it would get some $€£ from me –> TRAVELER.

  10. Awesome week with Saga, Avengers, Hawkeye, Sex, Uncanny Avengers & Uncanny X-Men!

  11. Actually, nevermind, I take back everything I’ve said.

New BQ answer: Party Down. I miss the sh*t out of that show and I’ll take more of it any possible way I can get it.

  12. AGE OF ULTRON #5
    HAWKEYE #9
    STAR WARS #4
    BATMAN #19
    BATMAN AND RED ROBIN #19
    UNCANNY X-MEN #4
    UNCANNY AVENGERS #6
    AVENGERS #9
    THE WALKING DEAD #109
    SAGA #12
    BATMAN: LI’L GOTHAM #1

GREAT WEEK! gonna be a tough pick.

BQ: I might have to go with Heroes. If they could muster up the brilliance they had in the 1st season a movie could work great!

  13. Age of Ultron #5
    Avengers #9
    Batman #19
    Saga #12
    Uncanny Avengers #6

  14. Age of Ultron #5
    Avengers #9
    Batman #19
    Hawkeye #9
    Saga #12
    Uncanny Avengers #6

  15. AGE OF ULTRON #5
    AVENGERS #9
    AVENGING SPIDER-MAN #19
    BATMAN #19
    FANTASTIC FOUR #6
    HAWKEYE #9
    SAGA #12
    SLEDGEHAMMER 44 #2
    STAR WARS #4
    THE SECRET SERVICE #6
    THE WALKING DEAD #109
    THOR: GOD OF THUNDER #7
    ULTRON #1AU
    UNCANNY AVENGERS #6
    UNCANNY X-MEN #4

  16. Big ones for the week. Saga, Batman and Avengers Arena.

    BQ: I don’t know, Torchwood I guess.

  17. Batman #19
    Batgirl #19

    BQ: Stargate Universe

  18. Three of the best books all on the same day, plus some Valiant action and a movie adaptation. Fantastic week.

    HAWKEYE #9
    BATMAN #19
    DJANGO UNCHAINED #3
    HARBINGER #11
    ARCHER & ARMSTRONG #9
    SAGA #12

    BQ: Sports Night or Deadwood.

  19. Nothing for me this week either.

But i would also want a movie for

    Pushing Daisies

Goddammit, sometimes i think this show never existed. It was to good to be true.

  20. Saga, Star Wars and Fantastic Four for me. Have Batman and Batmand and Robin pulled, but I am pretty much done with DC. I dropped them from my pull list in the future.

    BQ: Wheel of Fortune

  21. AGE OF ULTRON #5
    HAWKEYE #9
    MEGA MAN #24
    SAGA #12
    STAR WARS #4
    THE ROCKETEER: HOLLYWOOD HORROR #3
    THOR: GOD OF THUNDER #7
    ULTRON #1AU
    UNCANNY AVENGERS #6
    UNCANNY X-MEN #4

BQ: I would pay nearly any price to get more Blackadder.

    • Blackadder is one of my favorite shows of all time, but I have to admit that their last effort (the Back and Forth special) was disappointing. Still if they could revive it with the same level of brilliance as the rest of it, yeah, that would be awesome . . .

    • Gods, i love Blackadder. How about Bladders as a Mad Men era advert guy?:D

  22. AGE OF ULTRON #5
    STAR WARS #4
    BATMAN #19
    BATMAN AND RED ROBIN #19
    THOR: GOD OF THUNDER #7
    AVENGERS #9
    THE WALKING DEAD #109
    SAGA #12
    SEX #2

BQ: Battlestar Galatica. 24 would be fun to see Jack Bauer again. Seinfield, a whole two hours of them sitting in the dinner. Or, blast from the past…HR Puff an Stuff.

  23. Batgirl

And I might snag constantine and see what it’s all about

  24. Pretty much every time Demon Knights comes out it ends up on the top of my stack, followed by Archer & Armstrong, so those are probably what I’m looking towards the most. Also getting, Batman, Saucer Country (sniff) & coming back for more Sex (I thought that the first issue was a very intriguing set up). The biggest question mark of the week for me is what to expect from Batman & Red Robin; hopefully Tomasi knows what he’s doing.

BQ: I’ve always found it ridiculous that HBO didn’t let Deadwood finish off its story with one last season(says the guy who never watched season 3), so I’d vote for that. Or more Freaks and Greeks. Part of me has always been curious what a sequel to Twin Peaks would be like, but, it would probably be disappointing . . .

    • You mean a sequel to “Fire walk with me”?

    • “Fire Walk with Me” was mainly a prequel, I meant something coming after the events of the final episode. At least, at times I think that this might be interesting, then, the more I think of it, the more I suspect that it should just be left to our imaginations — at least the immediate events. Perhaps enough time has passed now for revisiting the town with a (mostly) new cast of characters . . .

  25. Getting:

    Sledgehammer .44
    Batman
    Threshold
    Saga

    Trying:
Batman: Lil Gotham and maybe Bats & Red Robin (will read the preview).

BQ: here’s an obscure one, Bottom. Which was the spiritual sequel to The Young Ones. Funny as all get out.

  26. BQ: Clone High

  27. Avengers
    Batman
    Batman and Red Robin
    Saga
    Wolverine

BQ: Well Timmy just won with Clone High but…..I would have to say Alcatraz for a most recent one. Clearly it needs more than a movie to explain what the hell was going on. But it had a pretty damn annoying season/series finale where a lot of things were left in the air. It could make for a good action film if they had the chance.

  28. Saga + Thor

BQ: would pay good money for a LOST movie that ignores the last season and gives things a proper resolution.

  29. I’m happy for a light week this Wednesday.

    Batman
    Fantastic Four
    Saga
    Saucer Country
    *Maybe* Lil’ Gotham

BQ: Since others have mentioned my original pick Deadwood, I’m going with Bored to Death. I’ve read that they might be working on a film version which would make me SO happy. The cast had such wonderful chemistry, it was the best Ted Danson has been since Cheers. If you haven’t seen it, do yourself a favor and check it out!

  30. Light week for me. Good thing because my wallet took a beating the past couple of weeks.

    Star Wars
    Batman
    Batman & Red Robin
    Fantastic Four
    Wolverine

BQ: My all-time favorite: the original Battlestar Galactica with original toasters please.

  31. BQ: Carnivale. You are not forgotten.

  32. I can’t wait to read The Walking Dead….

BQ: Easiest question to date… Smallville! Best ,show, ever………………

  33. Only five titles this week, with Saga, Batman and Batgirl at the top of my list (Thor as well, actually. Never thought I’d say that!)

BQ: Clone High is indeed the best answer…but RoiVampire reminded me of Brimstone which was probably ahead of it’s time given the popularity of shows like Supernatural. I had forgotten about that one but the concept was fantastic!

  34. BQ: More X-Files.

  35. Not continuing with Sex. Er, Sex the comic book. But I will keep on with Wolverine for now.

Also, the other usual suspects: Batman, Saga, Uncanny X-Men, Star Wars, Walking Dead.

I’ll probably try to grab a copy of BM & Robin #19 as well. I’m curious.

BQ: Gatchaman / Battle of the Planets

  36. Super light week this week. I’m hoping that my shop’s reorders for East of West will be in, but I yhink I may toss in one of the Outlaw Territory trades or a Hex trade that I haven’t picked up yet or something with a horse and a six shooter in it, so that both my total at the register isn’t that embarrassingly small and because another Western on my pull list or shelf isn’t a bad thing.

    BATMAN #19
    HAWKEYE #9
    THE TRANSFORMERS: REGENERATION ONE #90

BQ: The easy go to answer got nixed in the description. I’m taking my usual back up answer, Brisco County Jr, out of consideration because I’d honestly like to see more straight forward Westerns in theaters and less cross genre stuff. Instead I’m going with a semi dark horse candidate of Magnum, PI. Are there dangling plot threads? Not really. Did the show end in an untimely manner? With eight seasons under it’s belt, again, not really. I’d just like to check in on the surviving cast members and have one last case with them.

  37. BATMAN #19
    HAWKEYE #9
    SAGA #12
    STAR WARS #4

BQ: In a few weeks, my answer to this will be Community.
