Marvel NOW! Jason Aaron & Esad Ribic Pit THOR: GOD OF THUNDER Against a “God Butcher”

We’ve seen Jason Aaron’s jovial side in Wolverine vs. the X-Men, but fans of the Scalped creator’s more hellacious appetites should revel in his upcoming Marvel NOW! project.

This November, Jason Aaron is storming Asgard to chronicle Thor: God of Thunder in an all new ongoing series. He’s partnering with Esad Ribic, the spectacular artist who channeled Frazetta in The Mighty Thor: Loki limited series (converted to a motion comic called Thor & Loki: Blood Brothers last year). There’s a surplus of gravity in that pairing, and according to an interview on Newsarama, Aaron has appropriately lofty ambitions for the run.

In the opening story line, Aaron will follow the immortal Thor through three different eras: his mischievous youth in Midgard’s age of vikings, his modern exploits as an Avengers, and a far-flung future where old King Thor reigns as the last monarch of Asgard. Chaining all of this together is one horrific threat, a new character known as “The God Butcher.” Aaron calls Gorr a serial killer of gods, a character on a murderous spree intent on ridding the cosmos of all deities. It’s a story that promises to take Thor through thousands and thousands of years, but also through many realms and into deepest space.

So, this one’s gonna be big.

  1. I can finally read Thor again.

I wish I could see if the price on the cover was $2.99 or $3.99 (I know, maybe a little silly, but I can only handle so many $3.99 books!).

    • Paul Montgomery Paul Montgomery (@fuzzytypewriter) says:

      It’s $3.99. It’s not a silly concern.

    • Fett02 Fett02 says:

Any of the Marvel books that have the free digital download are going to be $3.99.

    • harwellpkg harwellpkg says:

I would rather it be a $2.99 book with no digital download like DC does. No need for both especially for someone like me who hates digital!

    • SEChambers says:

Ever since I started sharing my Marvel digital codes with some friends who own ipads, turning them on to comics when often they don’t really by them, as well as my buddy who is struggling to raise two kids on a teacher’s salary and is more of a DC guy, I’ve felt the extra dollar isn’t that much of a burden at all. It’s well worth it to spread the love, in my eyes at least.

      @SEChambers:

      But my lord…is that…LEGAL?

    • @bub

I’m pretty sure it’s fine with any normal comic, but I wouldn’t dare do that with a Thor! There’s a good chance of being struck by lightning for such acts.

  3. DavidClark DavidClark says:

    Well, THAT sounds interesting.

  4. Fett02 Fett02 says:

I haven’t tried an issue of Thor since the first issue of JMS’s run. I guess it’s time to end my Thor drought

  5. I will download this he for sure, sounds awesome.

  6. sitara119 sitara119 says:

not an Aaron fan, but this sounds hellacious.
haven’t been into Thor books since around Siege when Dr Doom was performing vivisections on Asgardians. that was some good storytelling. unlike Fraction’s Mighty Thor garbage.

  7. SpiderTitan SpiderTitan says:

Finally a run on Thor that I can find interesting since JMS’. Fraction’s first story arc was ok, but Aaron with Ribic just sounds so fittingly epic! CAN’T WAIT!!! : )

  8. very cool concept. might have to check this out.

  9. nastysnow nastysnow says:

im a aaron fan but his hulk run has been god awful. so i hope his thor run can be good

  10. zattaric zattaric says:

    That’ll do.

  11. Anyone know if Ribic will be drawing this (like the Ultimates) or painting it (Like Loki)?

    • Roldan Roldan says:

I don’t think he can do painted with an ongoing so probably his style he used in Ultimates. That means we might also get some awesome coloring by Dean White.

    • KenOchalek KenOchalek says:

Dean White’s name is on the cover in the article, so I think it’s a safe bet that Esad is not painting the interiors.

“In the opening story line, Aaron will follow the immortal Thor through three different eras: his mischievous youth in Midgard’s age of vikings, his modern exploits as an Avengers, and a far-flung future where old King Thor reigns as the last monarch of Asgard.”

What grabs me about this is by having three different timelines in place Aaron can potentially tell his Thor story without being beholden to whatever événement annuel happens in the greater Marvel Universe.

Sounds like it could be epic.

  13. halik halik says:

I hope Gorr looks as badass as Kratos.

  14. I hope we’re finally getting some good storylines for Thor since he’s my favorite comic. All the post Fear Itself issues have been painful.

  15. Does anyone get the “Join the revolution” banner at the bottom?

  16. sphinx69 sphinx69 says:

In my old age I have become a Thor fan. I am really looking forward to this creative team.

  17. Never read a single issue of Thor before. Guess that will change in November.

  18. JRScherer JRScherer says:

    Gorr = Desak?

  19. Arathi411 Arathi411 says:

A lot of the books for marvel now sound great creatively, the banner and covers in general seem subpar though. That and they are just going to renumber on us as soon as it suits them.
