Look! Up in the Sky! It’s the ADVENTURES OF SUPERMAN with Jeff Parker, Chris Samnee, Chris Sprouse and…Orson Scott Card?

Following up on the digital first Batman: Legends of the Dark Knight anthology series (the one with stories by Damon Lindelof and Jeff Lemire), DC has announced a companion series called Adventures of Superman. It’s about Detective Chimp Superman.

Chris Samnee posted a little tease of his story with writer Jeff Parker and colorist Matt Wilson. That’s actually the third installment, due out in May from the DC Comics App (with print bundles to follow). The first one’s a story by Orson Scott Card and Aaron Johnston with art by Chris Sprouse and Karl Story.

Comments

  1. Ill buy this in print format.

  2. Action Comics should be Jeff Parker and Chris Sprouse all the time. It’s the biggest no brainer for the next move.

  3. This is the best Superman comic news in a long time! So many great names connected to this so far. Count me in!

    • Agreed 😀 This is looking to be the best Superman book DC has. Cannot wait!

    • Being that I’ve sworn off of just about all of DC’s “New52”, I was super-stoked when I discovered the Legends of the Dark Knight digital comics. I was even more excited when those stories turned out to be really good. Now you’re saying Superman’s getting the same treatment? And look at those creators. I have very high hopes for this book, and I think it’ll be the perfect companion piece to LOTDK.

  4. Oh, I can’t wait!

This, indeed, is a swell time to be a Superman fan.

  5. I haven’t bought every Batman one digitally but at 99 cents each if I like one of the creators I will always give them a read. I wish they did more digital stuff with great creators.

Even a Strang Tales / Bizzaro No1 thing with web comics / underground people would be great.

  6. Oh, I will definitely be buying this in print form. And Samnee’s Superman? More please!

  7. Man I would love to see Chris Samnee on an ongoing Superman. That teaser looks amazing!

  8. Finally, some good Superman news.

  9. *drool*

    Can’t wait!!!

  10. Is it bad that the first thing I look for as a sign of Superman quality is the red shorts?

  11. SOLD!

  12. This looks really cool!

  13. Now this is some Superman that I care about. Samnee is a damned monster. That is a fantastic image.

  14. Whew, with “Superman Family Adventures” wrapping I’ve been a little worried there wouldn’t be a single good Superman title for what may become the summer of Superman , but here we go, the perfect book for comic fans and surefire new fans to be!!

  15. Samnee drawing Superman in shorts? What’s not to love? I’m in for the print version.

  16. A Superman anthology series with a murderer’s row of writers and artists?

I’m throwing my money at the screen as hard as i can!

  17. So refreshing to see that classic costume again. ‘Iconic” is the keyword here.

  18. I am so excited for this. 2013 is going to be a great Superman year!

(And I don’t want to forget to praise the SMALLVILLE comic, for being the torch-bearer through an otherwise quiet and uneven New 52 Superman era. Bryan Q. Miller is the only writer who’s been providing the real Superman.)

  19. Why couldn’t they get this type of talent on the new 52?

    • That’s what I was wondering the same thing… I was going to mention this in my comment, but wasn’t sure if I had it right.

I remember Ron saying awhile ago that the digital-only folks are a separate team on the west coast and haven’t integrated too tightly with DC Central (at least yet). Anyone else know what the facts are for this not in fuzzy podcast remembrance speak?

    • Even though people didn’t like Ultimate Iron Man I have so much trust in OSC’s ability to write I would have bought every New 52 title his name was on. Same goes with Chris Samnee on art duties….

This among many other things is why The New 52 was such a letdown.

    • @jpriester73, I actually enjoyed “Ultimate Iron Man” vol.1. I love how it really took chances with Tony Stark’s story (like the Ultimate universe is supposed to do). I felt the second volume was alot less interesting tho. I don’t think OSC could do an (New 52) ongoing series, but would love to see him given the chance.Something small to prove himself on, a title that might be canceled soon anyway that can be “saved”.

    • I’m assuming that it was easier to line up these creators as their committment was small: one eight page story versus an unlimited number issues of an ongoing series. Some of these names, such as Lemire, already have full schedules that would not fit an ongoing, though it would be easier to work in an isolated short . . .

  20. Orson Scott Card? Interesting. Very. Interesting.

  21. Nice…

  22. Orson Scott Card? No thanks, I’m out!

    • That’s what I thought too. No more of my dollars shall belong to him.

    • I left a comment here about how much of an outspoken hateful homophobe Orson Scott Card is, but that coment didn’t get approved. I’d like to know the reason for that.

    • He’s not hateful or a homophobe because as a Mormon he feels homosexuality is a sin. People always are outspoken in their hate for him because of his religious views. I really don’t think its wrong to express what your religious views are, or to desire that other people agree with what you believe to be the way to salvation. I don’t know him personally or anything but from interviews I’ve listen too he seems like a pretty nice guy.

    • My reply to jpriester73:

I don’t think it’s wrong to express your religious views. I couldn’t care less about what kind of religion people have. That being said, you say OSC is neither hateful nor a homophobe and that is just plain wrong. Let’s start…

When Massachussetts and California finally recognized same-sex marriage OSC called it “the end of democracy in America” and therefore he advocates taking down our government “by whatever means is made possible or necessary.” He also says that gay people have “sex-role dysfunctions,” and that they are “tragic genetic mix-ups”. All this is from one essay that OSC wrote for mormontimes.com, appearantly they decided to delete or move it by now, otherwise I could give you the link. But if you google his quotes I am sure you will find working links.

Here’s a little “gem” from wikipedia: In 1990 Card called for laws that ban gay sex to “remain on the books… to be used when necessary to send a clear message that those who flagrantly violate society’s regulation of sexual behavior cannot be permitted to remain as acceptable, equal citizens within that society”

So, no I don’t think he’s a “pretty nice guy” like you clain. Him being mormon has nothing to do with the fact that he is obviously a despicable nutbag. I really have no energy to post further examples of Orson Scott Card’s homophobia here (that’s frigging exhausting and depressing) but your comment couldn’t be left unanswered. It’s sad that I seem to be the only one who cares.

  23. That is a stellar list of creators! I’ll definitely check this out.

  24. These digital exclusives are the one area DC are excelling in. Hopefully this one will be as good as Legends of the Dark Knight (which isn’t always amazing, but at least is full of variety and is not bogged down in universe continuity.)

Orson Scott Card is someone who I have problems separating artist and art with these days though. Might skip that one.

  25. I specifically planned to buy Scott Snyder’s “Man of Steel” maxi-series to fill my Superman quota, this series throws a wrench into my plan! The idea of Bruce Timm writing more Superman stories is almost too good to pass up. Plus Jeff Lemire was born to write anything Superman. Very interested to see what OSC comes up with in his stories, love his “Ender’s/Shadow” novels.

  26. That’s definitely an interesting line-up. I’ll have to skip the Orson Scott Card issue though. i can’t support anything that man is involved in with good conscious

  27. If Detective Chimp isn’t on the first page of the first issue I’ll be supremely disappointed.

  28. well this sounds very very very cool. Definitely excited to check this out…those are some great creators attached.

I really hope these are a bit more “classic” Superman stories. Stick to the core of who the character is and there is so much you can do with it i think.

  29. I’m excited for almost every creator… but J.T Krul? Yeah… gonna skip that one.

  30. “Pardon my Kandor, but I’m gosh golly thrilled.”

Oh Paul, you are the living end!!

  31. I am Jor-ELated!

  32. If Parker is writing it, I’m reading it! These digital first anthologies are pretty fun. Smallville too. Probably the best thing DC has going on right now besides Batman.

  33. This seems like a good idea to me too. Here’s hoping it does well, but with the list of artist above, I can only think it will.
