Light Week? Try Invincible Returns, New Avengers: Luke Cage, and Stephen King’s N

Sometimes you look down at that pull list that you just made and you realize there aren't many books on it and that you've got a light week! And that just won't do! You can't go all the way down to the comic book store for just a handful of books. It's at times like these that you need some suggestions on new comics to try. Well, luckily, we're here for you.

Ron says try:

Invincible Returns #1

Invincible Returns #1
By Robert Kirkman, Ryan Ottley & Cory Walker

If you're not on the Invincible band wagon yet, here's your chance.  After a year of brutal happenings, Invincible goes back to his old costume and this issue sets up the next story arc in the main Invincible book.  Plus it's got art from Ryan Ottley (regular Invincible artist), Cory Walker (the original Invincible artist) and covers by Darwyn Cooke, David Finch and Erik Larsen!  Something for everybody!

Josh says try:

The New Avengers: Luke Cage #1

New Avengers: Luke Cage #1
By John Arcudi & Eric Canete

Clearly, they thought the title wouldn't be a strong enough draw with only Luke Cage's name, but nonetheless, I'd be sold no matter what this was about with John Arcudi on words and Eric Canete on pictures. Plus, over the last few years, I've come to really like Cage, and if this does well, maybe we could see a series?  Worth a shot, at the very least.

Conor says try:

Stephen King's N

  Stephen King's N #2
By Marc Guggenheim & Alex Maleev

When the first issue came out, Josh said that Stephen King's N. was creepy and awesome. And boy, Josh was right. Stephen King's N. is creeeepy and awesome. Madness is spreading through Maine and it's causing people to commit horrible acts and then kill themselves. Are evil demons from another dimension breaking through barriers that once held back their evil ways? Or is it all just the mad hallucinations of one sick and twisted man? I dunno, but I want to find out!

Comments

  1. Is N the same as the motion comic?

  2. What’s a motion comic?

    😉

  3. Good choices.

I say people should also be getting: MARVEL ZOMBIES 5 #1.

Yes yes it’s ANOTHER Marvel Zombies title. But it has Fred Van Lente as the writer and Kano as artist. So there’s a good start. Then you have the focus on Machine Man; which is a great character and if anyone has read MZ3 they know Lente is perfect at writing the character. If you take away the aspect it’s another zombie comic, I think you’ll find a lot of enjoyment out of this. Even the preview didn’t showcase a lot of zombies.

  4. N # 1 was very good and a nice way of getting a bit of a Stephen King hit in the comics format without buying into the whole Dark Tower gargantua.  I’ll alkso be taking a look at Luke Cage, Canete is awesome!

  5. I’m generally OK with artistic tweaks, but that’s meant to be Luke Cage? Pass

  6. For those of you in South Eastern PA, NA: Luke Cage takes Luke to Philly! Represent!

  7. I like that Luke Cage cover. Pretty badass. I haven’t read any Avengers in years, but if Canete is the cover artist I might flip through it at the LCS.

  8. A must buy feature would be nice too. There may be some books that are must buys for the ifanboy crew that aren’t for others and a must buy feature would give them a chance to push their favorite books.

  9. Looking forward to Invincible Returns. The Luke Cage mini doesn’t look terribly promising from that cover and the couple of interviews I’ve read about it.

  10. I haven’t realy read much of Kirkman’s Invincible or Walking Dead. I’ve been meaning to buy some collections but I need to dwindle my stack down a bit.

  11. All good suggestions – I’m waiting for N in a nice hardcover to put on the shelf.

I’d also throw Avengers: Origin out there as a suggestion – Joe Casey has shown in his Earth’s Mightest Heroes minis that he does have a good handle on the early Avengers and a nice retro-style of storytelling that doesn’t whack you over the head. Plus, Phil Noto – that is all.

  12. I’m considering Invincible Returns.  Unfortunately, I am doubtful that my shop will have any copies.  The owner seldom orders anything non-DC/Marvel unless it has been specifically requested in advance.

  13. That is an Awesome cover on New Avengers Luke Cage! Who’s the cover artist?

  14. Avatar photo Paul Montgomery (@fuzzytypewriter) says:

Cover and interior by Eric Canete.

  15. @glwarm76 – What’s what this is.

  16. so apparently Luke Cage is just Hellboy without horns…..i had no idea

  17. I might buy Invincible Returns…I’ve been reading Invincible in trades and hoped to be eventually caught up enough to jump onto issue, but since I’m only up to vol. 5 or 6, I might as well jump on here.

  18. You know, this week is a very light week for me. I think it might be time for me to finnaly hope on the Invincible bandwagon.

  19. Listen to me people: I know I said that up there, and I meant it, but seriously: Captain America Black Panther. If you like the kinds of comics I like, you’ll like. Mucho.

  20. I share nearly all of Josh’s tastes and some of Connor’s so I’ll pick up "N" and "Luke Cage"
