Jim Carrey Goes All Rubberfacey in KICK-ASS 2

If you’re into both Jim Carrey and the upcoming release of Kick-Ass 2: Balls to the Wall, we’ve got good news for you. Carrey has apparently signed up to play the Colonel in the sequel to movie featuring a lot of kids swearing and killing people. The movie will be written and directed by Jeff Wadlow, whom I have never heard of.

The official release date is June 28, 2013. Carrey will bring some veteran talent to the cast, as well as having a screen credit that doesn’t take up as many letters as this new class of actors, like Chloe Grace Moretz and Christopher Mintz-Plasse.

Also, it looks like John Leguizamo is in the flick, so that’s two energetic comedians from the 90s I don’t really like. Hopefully they’ll leave some of the magic they brought to Batman Forever and Spawn on the table at home.

Comments

  1. Okay. now I’m interested.

  2. I’ll file this under good news.

  3. I hate Jim Carrey with an unholy passion. That said it seems like he’s tailor made to the role. Can’t wait!

  4. Huh. I’m somewhere between mildly curious and indifferent about this news, but the info on the writer/director is surprising; I’d been under the impression that the same writing/directing team from the first movie would be back. I was really impressed by the way the first movie took Millar’s ideas and improved them by adding more genuine fun, and stripping off a lot of the cynicism and mean-spiritedness that bogs down some of Millar’s work. I bailed on Kickass 2 the comic a few issues in after it became clear Millar was determined to push those same buttons even hard on this volume, but was hopeful that the movie might be in safer hands. Which is not to say that Wadlow won’t take a similar tact with Kickass 2, but, because I’m not familiar with his work, I have less reason to hope that he’ll know how to turn it around. Filing this one under ‘Rental’, for now at least.

    • Yea, I knew about the change in writer/director from the start. Personally I was fearing it would be a quick cash-in, as soon as I heard they were going for a lower budget with an unknown director (he’s literally just done a low budget horror film called Cry_Wolf and the teen martial arts movie Never Back Down).
But Jim Carrey joining the cast gives me a little more faith that the studio are serious about the film.
I’m still not certain it will be great though (Kick Ass is in my top 5 super hero films) the tone of the first film was so specific and would be very difficult for a new director to nail.

    • The choice of Jeff Wadlow makes me very happy. Cry_Wolf is an excellent teen thriller and I’m definitely interested in seeing what he’ll do with Kick-Ass 2.

  5. Jim Carrey is a legend. I wasn’t interested at all until just now.

  6. Great casting…..has anybody else seen 23, if they keep him serious I think he will rock.

  7. Josh, not a fan of Man on the Moon?

  8. Hmmmmmmmmm. A bit put off. But let’s see. I do like a bit of Jim carrey. But this film seems rushed. Could of well taking their time and got the guy who did x men and stardust back on board. I really hope it’s good but the comic second time around won’t as good as the first. We’ll see. Hopefully Millar has enough of a grip on the production. Ahhh but am still not sure about Carey. Fingers crossed I’ll leave it at that.

  9. I’m not terribly thrilled about the movie either and i loved the comic. Josh has fair points in that the director is a no name at this point and Carrey’s last movie was about penguins living in an apartment.

so yeah, this level of enthusiasm is exactly correct

  10. Josh, I won’t stand for this. John Leguizamo was fantastic as The Clown in Spawn. As for for Jim Carrey, go watch him in In Living Color, The Truman Show and Eternal Sunshine for the Spotless Mind and don’t speak on it anymore. ;P

  11. This is great news to me. I am glad.

  12. I saw Kick Ass and was not amused. I guess a potty-mouthed little girl works as a comic character (I haven’t read the title), but that kid didn’t make me laugh once.
While Ace Ventura was funny, Jim Carrey is truly overrated. Eternal Sunshine was good because of the story itself and Kate Winslet, of course.

    • And those pesky next door neighbor kids as well! Keep running over my waterhose with their bicycles! In my day they’d get the switch for sure! Right across the bottom!

  13. Jim Carrey is the lead in my favorite movie EVER… ‘Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind.’ So I’m still in the give-him-a-chance crowd.

And Leguizamo is a fine actor: Romeo + Juliet, Summer of Sam, Carlito’s Way. Granted, it’s been a while since those but I’m still a fan. Growing up in the typical Puerto Rican family, his comedy and one-man shows are right up my ally. I can understand why it wouldn’t be everyone’s bag though.

I’m more put off by the out of nowhere choice of writer/director. I’m guessing they need to pitch pennies somewhere.

  14. I’m about as over Jim Carrey as I am Kickass, so this affects me not at all.

  15. I LOVED Jim as the riddler, that is my fave batman movie, totally fun.

I didn’t like the changes to kick ass movie with the jet pack and getting the girl. But the two leads were great and even nick cage was good.

I think Carrey could bring much needed camp to kickass 2, bring it on.

  16. Well if they wanted to make sure people are going to see this, adding Jim Carry is a good choice.

Although, lately, his movie choices has been utter horse shit. So who knows if this will mean a good movie?

  17. It turns out that a lot of people like Jim Carrey. I knew that, but still don’t get it.

    • There was this one movie where he bent over and talked out of his butt! HILARIOUS!!!

    • Me,Myself and Irene was hilarious and he did a spot on Andy Kaufman in Man On The Moon, I liked Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless mind too. I also think his Riddler and his delivery of his madcap lines were the only thing good about that movie, Val Kilmer wasn’t bad either, no Michael Keaton or Christian Bale Bruce Wayne but still good….Val KIlmers JIm Morrison, Doc Holiday and John Holmes are classic though if I were to really mention his work. I think Jim Carey taking a role like this is a smart unexpected edge move to give his career spotlight shining again and attract unexpected viewers to the film.

    • Two words.

      Cabla Gubla.

  18. I loved the first movie. My expectations are lower for this one, but it seems like it could still be a lot of fun.

  19. ERR…I don’t like Jim Carrey so everybody has to hate him,,,,children please calm down
